Jonah Whitman is the main protagonist of the East Patch analog horror series Angel Hare.
He is a young man who finds a VHS copy of the Christian children's program, and recounts his cherished childhood memories surrounding it. However, upon watching the tape, he notices many differences with it and his recordings of the show. While the VHS tapes appear to be relatively standard for the genre the show is in, his recordings have the protagonist, Angel Gabby, protecting Jonah from his mysterious, abusive father, until she made him create an alibi when she plots his disappearance.
He was portrayed by Roger Hanna.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Jonah lacks the corrupting qualities that prevent most Analog Horror heroes from counting as Pure Good like being an Anti-Hero or Extremist.
- While Jonah is indeed obsessed with Angel Hare to the point of Fanaticism, this obsession isn't corrupting as he never does anything selfish out of that which is shown by two telling examples:
- Upon realizing that his mother did a lot of research into the show, Jonah still abstains from discussing it with her to allow her to forget the events.
- In the Season 2 Finale, Jonah was willing to have his memory wiped by Gabby so that she could continue to help the children of the internet without being a "burden" showing that despite his obsession with Gabby, Jonah is not possessive of her.
- While it is heavily implied that Jonah asked Gabriel to kill his abusive father and refused to forgive HIM, this does not hold up as a prevention for the following reasons.
- One, Jonah's role in his father's presumed death is ultimately vague and left up to speculation.
- Two, the abuser's fate was treated as warranted and deserved for his abuse of Jonah with how HE is portrayed as a dangerous man who was clearly irredeemable.
- Finally, Jonah was a young child at the time so he may not have developed a proper moral compass at the time.
- Even though Jonah is rather unstable and paranoid thanks to his father's abuse and his obsession with Angel Hare, which is shown by the fact that he seemed to genuinely suffer from delusions that Zag would betray him, none of this impairs his agency in the present as he never using it as an excuse to hurt anyone with his paranoia only driving Jonah to be more cautious in a situation rather than making bad decisions.
Background[]
- While it is heavily implied by Camael that they used Segen, one of his old friends, to play his games, get out of his abusive home and finally as an alibi for his father's disappearance which caused the latter to suffer from trying to seek the approval of others, this was mainly a result from his abuse at the hands of his father as stated by Angel Gabby. Furthermore, Jonah greatly regrets this in Season 3 and is shown to try and mend his friendship with Segen by the end of the series, nullifying this as a corrupting quality.
- It is heavily implied that under the instruction of Gabby, Jonah disassembled a gun and eventually hid it to prevent his abusive father from hurting more people with the weapon.
Season 1[]
- Upon rediscovering the tapes of Angel Hare, Jonah decides to look through them and analyze the differences to find Gabby again.
- In Footage Not Found, when given an opportunity to find out more about the truth behind his childhood by talking to his mother upon realizing the extent of her investigations into Wreath of Life, Jonah chooses to not question her or force her to revisit the subject, understanding that she deserved to move on from the unspecified incident.
- During the season 1 finale, Jonah livestreams the original broadcast of the show, successfully bringing back Angel Gabby who happily welcomes the reunion.
Season 2[]
- Was immediately worried when realizing that Angel Gabby was absent and kept the show on, which lead to Zag's entry for his investigation on Gabby.
- While he did coerce Zag to respond by threatening to end the live broadcast, Jonah only did this as a last resort when the angel didn't respond to anything else he said.
- Was willing to hear out Zag when he expressed that the search would be easier if Jonah broadcast a setting with more depth.
- Under Zag's instructions, Jonah found the disc for Wylde Hare which made the investigation to find Gabby progress more smoothly after broadcasting it.
- Came up with the idea to stream as many screens as possible to reach out loudly to Angel Gabby with Francis and Jonah helping.
- Upon Zag's assistance, Jonah decided to prioritize finding Gabby over learning more about the past, realizing that it didn't matter anymore.
- He quickly sympathized with Gabby's plight at being trapped across multiple screens to help millions of children on the internet.
- Offered Gabby to wipe his own memory, believing that it would allow Gabby more freedom to help the children.
- Happily accepted Gabby's offer to become the new CEO of Wreath of life, saving her from a FWTD and allowing her to help millions of children with more ease.
Season 3[]
- Listened to Segen's entire video about his experience with Hyrax to the Rocks before pulling out the cartridge.
- Was concerned when considering the possibility that Gabby and Zag could be hurt when interacting with the game before resolving to help them as well as Cammy.
- Upon noticing the change in the opening speech of the game, Jonah was concerned if he was a good friend to Segen.
- Sympathized with Cammy after considering how lonely the game was.
- Decided to go on his own without Gabby or Zag to progress further into the game.
- Upon being confronted by the "Princess", (actually Camael in disguise) who berated him for relying on cheats and lacking points, Jonah reveals he is more focused on trying to mend his friendship with Segen rather than gaining points.
- After figuring out that the game itself was Camael, who confronted him about using his friends to make himself feel better, Jonah acknowledges that but explains that they also use his help as well before summoning Zagzagel and Gabriel.
- Explains to Gabby and Zag how the setting and the characters of the game were all Camael, allowing Gabby to pull him out.
- When Camael tries to justify his mindset by expressing that people like to win, Jonah points out that Camael always loses.
- Encouraged Camael to try and find his own way to improve himself, respecting his decision to not take the help of others.
- Despite calling Camael abrasive, this was done to show how terrible his mindset was and to further encourage the Angel to go on his own quest.
- In the last seconds of the season, it is revealed that Jonah took the first steps to try and mend his friendship with Segen by calling him to the park and catch up.
