~ Kagaya Ubuyashiki speaking his viewpoint of eternity to Muzan Kibutsuji. |
Kagaya Ubuyashiki (産屋敷 耀哉, Ubuyashiki Kagaya) is a major character in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise.
He is the invalid but brilliant, compassionate and wise leader of the Demon Slayer Corps as well as the 95th of his family line, who's strongly dedicated to eliminating the demons. He serves as a father figure to the corps, especially to the Hashira, who serves him with immense loyalty.
He is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese, while he is voiced by Matthew Mercer in English.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- As the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, he has led his organization with kindness and wisdom, attempting to ensure that each member of his corps survives their battle against Muzan and the demons.
- He even goes as far to treat every member of the corps, including the Hashira, like they are his own children, which further strengthen the loyalty of the corps' members.
- Every time a member of the corps dies, he takes the time to have them buried and remember their names, faces, and background, further demonstrating the love and care he has for the corps.
- It's also because of his leadership, he's indirectly responsible for the numerous lives that were saved by the corps' members, including the Hashira themselves.
- Thanks to his leadership and intellect, he has managed to hide the slayer corps' main HQ for many years, avoiding Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki's sight.
- Thanks to his sheer willpower of his goal on defeating Muzan, Kagaya managed to survive his fatal illness for a long time possible, even as it weakens his entire body.
- Even though he can be strict with his family, this is merely because he is trying to prepare them for their fight with Muzan and the demons, since he won't last much longer. But even then, Kagaya clearly loves them very much.
- A big example of this is with his wife, Amane. When he was 13, Amane (who was 17 at the time) was assigned to be his wife and caretaker to take care of his health. Kagaya agreed to the marriage but only on the condition that she cares for him in her own freewill, demonstrating his love and care for his wife.
- Although Kagaya's actions and methods are heavily questionable, this is mainly because he and the corps are in a war with Muzan and the demons, which requires Kagaya to make difficult choices, but even then, Kagaya has tried to ensure the best outcome possible.
- Although he hosts the Final Selection, a place that is infested with demons who can kill potential demon slayers, that can't exactly count for these reasons alone:
- Kagaya make sure the demons are trapped inside the mountains with wisteria, ensuring that they don't ever escape.
- The demons they have are gravely weak, and the only amount of people they could kill is 2-3 people, making them more easier to kill.
- The candidates are fully aware of the risk they are taking. They are becoming demon slayers so they know that they have to fight to stay alive, and they even have the time to train themselves before heading to the Selection. Not only that, but they have a choice if they want to become a demon slayer or not.
- Even though he doesn't show much reaction when it came to the deaths of his corps members, this is mainly because he cannot afford to show vulnerability and has to remain strong for the sake of the corps. And even, Kagaya makes sure to have the deceased members buried and remembered for their actions and deeds.
- He even outright admitted to Sanemi that if the demon slayers were sacrificial pawns, then he's a sacrificial pawn as well, and even stated that he wasn't really important, showing that he doesn't place himself higher than the Demon Slayer Corps members.
- Although he possesses strong hatred towards Muzan Kibutsuji, this is heavily justified as Muzan is responsible for many atrocities he and his kind have committed, and cursed the Ubuyashiki bloodline. And even with his hatred, he remains calm and even cordial when meeting the Demon King for the first time.
- In summary, his actions and methods may be morally questionable and somewhat manipulative, but they are heavily justified due to being in a war against Muzan and the demon race, and as such, requires difficult choices to make. Even so, Kagaya strives to ensure a positive outcome so that no more of his children need to suffer.
- Although he hosts the Final Selection, a place that is infested with demons who can kill potential demon slayers, that can't exactly count for these reasons alone:
- Kagaya ultimately stands out due to possessing low resources, as while he is the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, he doesn't possess powerful abilities like the breathing styles or demonic abilities, with the only unique abilities he has is his genius intellect, his Foresight (which allows him to correctly predict something), and a soothing voice that puts others at ease, which even included Muzan himself.
Background[]
- Following the death of his parents and siblings, Kagaya has been leading the Demon Slayer Corps since he was four years old.
- He helped several members of the Hashira in the past with his kindness and wisdom, which further strengthened their loyalty to Kagaya. This included:
- Gyomei Himejima, whom Kagaya personally saved when he was fourteen. After learning that Gyomei was innocent of the murders that occurred in his orphanage, he quickly saved him from being executed. He also gave reassurance to Gyomei, telling the gentle giant that he was not a murderer, which caused Gyomei to shed tears of joy by Kagaya's words. This led to Gyomei becoming the Stone Hashira and Kagaya's confidant.
- Because of recruiting Gyomei, he is also indirectly responsible for saving the lives of the Kocho sisters Kanae and Shinobu, who were saved by Gyomei after a demon (who murdered the sisters' parents) attempted to kill them. This led to the sisters becoming members of the corps, with Shinobu becoming a future key player in the defeat of Muzan.
- Tengen Uzui, a ninja who left his clan, being disgusted with his father and brother's ruthless methods. Kagaya praised Tengen for his decision, citing the great difficulty the young man must have endured to leave everything behind and accept a new direction in life. These words touched Tengen's heart and because of that, the latter would serve as the Sound Hashira.
- Sanemi Shinazugawa, whom the latter previously did not like Kagaya, and even accuses him at how he could smile as the leader responsible for numerous deaths and had assumed that he was just letting Demon Slayers die while he was sitting in the safety of the Hashira to protect, saying that his life wasn't the top priority, insulting him in the process. Kagaya gently responds by apologizing and telling him on how his body can't be able to do combat, and tells Sanemi to treat him however he wishes, as he is only respected because the others do so out of good intentions, and reminds him to focus on his duty as a Hashira as his only wish. Afterwards, he also gave Sanemi the letter of his late friend Masachika. This led to Sanemi becoming the Wind Hashira, and immensely loyal to Kagaya.
- Kyojuro Rengoku, whom Kagaya decided to appoint as the new Flame Hashira following his father Shinjiro's reassignment, tasking Kyojuro to protect Tokyo from a member of the Twleve Kizuki to prove his worth as the new Flame Hashira. This made Kagaya indirectly responsible for the death of Lower Two Demon Hairo, and the protection of Tokyo.
- Mitsuri Kanroji, whom Kagaya gently reassured that her abnormal strength and unique physical features were a gift from the gods, and those who spoke ill of her are jealous of her strength, which touched Mitsuri as she bowed and cried in relief as she was accepted by Kagaya and the Demon Slayer Corps for who she is.
- And finally Muichiro Tokito, who was saved by Kagaya indirectly, thanks to his wife Amane saving him from a near-death situation. He then calmly tells a confused Muichiro that his survival is paramount and should he survive, his lost memories will come back too, telling him to not miss the opportunity, as even trivial events can trigger them to come back.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba[]
- When he is informed by Kasugi Crow of a massacre occurring at Mount Natagumo, he sends both Giyu Tomioka and Shinobu Kocho to stop the massacre, from which he correctly believed to be a work of a member of the Twelve Kizuki. This made him indirectly responsible for the death of Lower Five Demon Rui and the Spider Demon family, and saving the lives of several demon slayers including Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Murata.
- During the Hashira Trial for the Kamado siblings Tanjiro and Nezuko, he informed the Hashira that he quickly accepted Tanjiro's situation and requests the Hashira to spare the siblings and support them as well.
- When Nezuko refused to drink Sanemi's blood, Kagaya concluded this as proof Nezuko will not harm a human being, and request both Sanemi and Obanai to not antagonize the Kamado siblings.
- He informs Tanjiro that there will be those who would not accept her sister and tells him to prove his worth by killing a member of the Twelve Kizuki.
- When Tanjiro vows to Muzan, Kagaya humorously implores him to start small with a Kizuki demon, much to Tanjiro's embarrassment and several of the Hashira's amusement.
- He sent Kyojuro to the Infinity Train, after hearing reports of forty people going missing, as well as a series of brutal attacks on a village that are believed to be related to the disappearances. This made Kagaya indirectly responsible for the death of the Slasher Demon, and later on Kyojuro (alongside Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira) protecting the 200 passengers on the train and killing Lower One Enmu.
- After hearing about Kyojuro's demise by the hands of the Upper Three Demon Akaza, he praises the Flame Hashira for accomplishing his mission to the very end and states that he isn't sadden because he too will join Kyojuro and the other deceased slayers soon.
- After hearing the deaths of Upper Six Demons Gyutaro and Daki, Kagaya praises Tengen, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke for accomplishing the impossible task on defeating an Upper Rank demon.
- After learning Nezuko became immune to sun, Kagaya correctly predicts Muzan will come after her and will invade his mansion to kill the Ubuyashiki Clan and absorb Nezuko to become immune to the sun, and sets up a plan in order to weaken Muzan and finally kill him once and for all.
- To ensure the success of the plan, he would recruit Lady Tamayo to the plan by inviting her to the Demon Slayer Corps' HQ, and assign her to work with Shinobu to create a drug that could turn demons into humans.
- He would also inform Gyomei of his suicidal plan, as he knew that the other Hashira would oppose against it. He requests Gyomei to try to kill Muzan by destroying his head, but if that fails, then he and the other corps' members must endure a long battle against him til sunrise, which would be the only way to kill the Demon King.
- He had his wife Amane inform the Hashira about the Demon Slayer Mark, an powerful ability that would be use to their advantage in the fight against Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki, but he also had them warned about the curse of the mark. This would lead to the Hashira Training (which was suggested by Gyomei) in an attempt to not only train the slayers to become more stronger, but a chance for the Hashira to unlock the mark.
- He thanked Amane for everything she had done for him, which moved his wife to tears.
- He requested Tanjiro to convince Giyu to take part in the Hashira Training, stating that due to his fatal illness, he cannot personally convince him. Because of his request, Tanjiro managed to not only convince Giyu to take part in the training, but also ensured that he didn't leave his position as the Water Hashira.
- Despite Muzan's actions cursing his entire family and murdering countless people, Kagaya tried to make Muzan feel some ounce of remorse for his atrocities. After realizing Muzan is completely unrepentant about his crimes, Kagaya killed himself to trap Muzan (alongside Amane and their elder daughters) assisted by Lady Tamayo so that the Demon Slayers have a chance to kill him.
- Prior to sacrificing himself, he challenged Muzan's philosophy and dreams of eternity, proudly proclaiming that eternity is a human feeling and uses the corps to prove that point. The corps, despite losing countless of members over the years, still remains strong and continues to exist, due primarily to their unwillingness to forgive beings such as Muzan for the atrocities they committed against humanity.
- Due to Kagaya's final acts, the Demon Slayers Corps (especially the Hashira) becomes highly motivated, and defeats Muzan and the remaining Twelve Kizuki, effectively ending the demon race and saving countless innocent people.
- He posthumously has his son Kiriya to let go of Nezuko (who was beginning to turn back into a human) as she head to the Infinity Castle, which played a big role in slowing down Demon King Tanjiro (who was forcibly turned into a demon by Muzan).
Trivia[]
- Kagaya serves as a pure good counterpart of his arch-nemesis Muzan Kibutsuji. Where Muzan treats every one of his demons as expandable and lacks any empathy for anyone or anything, Kagaya treats every one of his corps' members like they are own his family, remembers their names, and has complete empathy and kindness towards everyone and everything. Fittingly, their only confrontation leads to both of their deaths: Kagaya by sacrificing himself and Muzan with the help of the Demon Slayers.
