Come to think of it this country has treated life far too cheaply. Poorly armored tanks. Poor supply chains resulting in half of all deaths from starvation and disease. Fighter planes built without ejection seats and finally, kamikaze and suicide attacks. That's why this time I'd take pride in a citizen led effort that sacrifices no lives at all! This next battle is not one waged to the death, but a battle to live for the future.
~ Kenji discussing how callous Japan treats life.

Dr. Kenji Noda, also referred to as "Doc", is the tritagonist of the 2023 epic Kaiju thriller movie Godzilla: Minus One.

He is a scientist who used to develop weapons for the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II, only to later work as a minesweeper helping dispose of explosives left behind from the war.

He is portrayed by Hidetaka Yoshioka.

What Makes Him Pure Good[]

  • Following the end of World War II, he worked as a minesweeper in order to help dispose of explosives that were left behind.
  • Throughout the film, comforted Shikishima over his trauma of abandoning his duty as a kamikaze pilot.
  • Orchestrated Operation Wada Tsumi, involving using decompression which eventually allowed Shikishima to defeat Godzilla by blowing his head and causing the energy inside him to tear his body apart.
  • While discussing his plan, he reassured his crewmates that they would make it out alive, which ultimately did.
  • When Shikishima shows contempt and distrust for the operation, as a result of having recently lost Noriko, Noda assures him his plan is going to work in order to calm him down.
  • Before going out to confront Godzilla, he called out Imperial Japan for their callous disregard for their people, with him reassuring the people that were about to participate in defeating Godzilla that this was a fight for the future rather than a fight to the death and that he would make sure there was no sacrifices.
  • Unlike Shikishima who was wrathful and impulsive, Kenji doesn’t have any real corrupting qualities to speak of and is portrayed as a compassionate man who wants to make up for Imperial Japan’s disregard for life while also protecting Japan from Godzilla, as well as making sure nobody dies during the operation.
  • He crosses the Goodness Zone as though Koichi played more of a direct role in defeating Godzilla, he was the one who helped make the plan to defeat Godzilla.
  • After Godzilla is killed, Noda and his crew showcase respect to the fallen monster by saluting the creature as its corpse sinks into the ocean.

Trivia[]

  • He is one of the only four human characters from the Godzilla franchise (alongside Ishiro Serizawa, Joseph Brody, and Ford Brody) to be Pure Good.
  • To further drive the point of his Pure Good nature, it's unlikely Kenji would develop weapon of mass destruction as destructive as Oxygen Destroyer like his loose equivalent Daisuke Serizawa regardless whether he had enough funding and/or resources to do so taking into account of hi disillusionment over Japanese government's mindset at the time which saw their disregard for their own people's lives.
