Kion (pronounced Kai-on) is the titular main protagonist of the 2015 Disney Junior TV film The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar and its 2016-2019 follow-up series The Lion Guard, all of which are sequels to Disney's 1994 animated film The Lion King.
He's the son of Simba and Nala, the younger brother of Kiara, and the former leader of the Lion Guard, a group of protectors of the Pride Lands.
He was voiced by Max Charles, while Aaron Daniel Jacob provided his singing voice in the second half of the third season.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- As a cub, despite having somewhat of a sibling rivalry with his sister Kiara, he does still care for her, averting a repeat of what happened between Scar and Mufasa. Not to mention she seemed to have gotten over as the series went on.
- Though he was initially immature, Kion was still sensible enough to follow the rules and not go into dangerous places, a stark contrast to his father and sister who respectively went to the Elephant Graveyard and Outlands when they were told not to. Plus, he manages to subvert this corrupting quality after he became leader of the Lion Guard.
- Ever since he became the leader of The Lion Guard, Kion has been doing his best to protect The Pride Lands, trying to make the right choices for sake of the Circle of Life.
- He and his teammates have been helping The Pridelanders with their problems, protecting The Pride Lands from evil animals (some of which are redeemed), Kion has also been saving his family and doing his best to be a good leader.
- Unlike Bunga, Fuli and Ono, he believed Beshte's story of Ajabu and called them out for hurting his feelings. It was also implied that Kion believed him due to the connections of a leopard coming at the same time as Bestie's friend.
- He told Fuli to be careful of her limits and when she didn't listen to him, Kion still saved her.
- Though he was initially mistrustful of Makuu's intentions during the Savannah Summit, Kion forgives Makuu and saved him from being fallen into a pit. When originally at odds with Makuu, Kion chose non-lethal force against the crocodiles, even using the Roar with restraint.
- While he was unwilling to trust Jasiri because she was a hyena, he apologized for his mistrust and saved her from Janja and help her when she was in need after realizing not all of them are bad.
- He helped Badili stand up to his bully Mapigano.
- As a teenager, he is more willing to forgive his enemies; forgiving his archenemy Janja despite their conflict and dislike.
- He defeated Scar by summoning The Great Lions of the Past to judge him; prior to that, he forgave the Pure Evil Scar for his crimes which was very admirable as Scar did very heinous crimes that were completely unforgivable
- Though he was very jerkish when he got a scar from Ushari, as he lashes out at his friends in anger and loses his temper, it was very hard to put him at fault for it as he was just simply affected by the venom his scar had. Not to mention he always feels regret for it and apologizes whenever he loses his temper.
- It even shows that unlike Scar when he was bitten by a cobra and chose to do wrong over right and thus became a Complete Monster/Pure Evil, Kion resisted the venom and to sought help from his friends to find a cure, allowing him to be Pure Good.
- Also, once he got to the Tree of Life, Kion was never seen losing his temper or lashing out at anyone again afterword, meaning that it was only a heating-up period.
- He apologized to Rani for roaring at her brother Baliyo (even though said brother impulsively attacked first).
- After he came to The Tree of Life (along with his friends), he has been helping The Night Pride to protect The Tree of Life from Makucha's army as he felt culpable for leading them there.
- He comforted Rani after her grandmother's passing.
- He defeated Makucha's army and sent them far away from the Tree of Life.
- After he came back home, he chooses Vitani to be the new leader of The Lion Guard and he came back to The Tree of Life, married Rani and became King of The Tree of Life.
- In going against the tradition of the Lion Guard being only lions, Kion allows other animals to be more included.
- His friendship with Jasiri and forgiving Janja plays a huge factor in peaceful ties between the Pride Lands and Outlands.
Trivia[]
- Kion was first approved as Pure Good, but was later briefly rejected and considered Near Pure Good, as it was thought that he failed the admirable standard compared to Kiara and Kovu. However, once it was pointed out that he protected the Pride Lands and the Tree of Life multiple times and that he played a larger role in permanently defeating Scar, he was subsequently proposed and re-approved as Pure Good.
- Kion can be considered the good counterpart to his great-uncle and predecessor, Scar. As both are the second born in the royal family and former leaders of their lion guards. However unlike Scar, Kion truly loves his family and was never jealous of his older sibling. Kion also never used the roar for evil purposes unlike Scar who used the roar to destroy his lion guard. Furthermore, after being scared and poisoned, Kion chose to seek medical aid while Scar chose to be influenced by the poison's negative effects.
