Growing old and dying is what gives beauty to the fleeting span of a human life. It is precisely because we age and die, that our lives are unbearably valuable and noble. Strength is not a word that means much in regards to the flesh.
~ Rengoku rejecting Akaza's offer to become a Demon

Kyojuro Rengoku (煉獄 杏寿郎) is a major protagonist in the 2016-2020 dark fantasy action manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and its 2019 anime adaptation.

He is the deuteragonist of the Mugen Train Arc and its 2020 anime movie adaptation of the same name, as well as the titular main protagonist of the spin-off manga series Kyojuro Rengoku Gaidan.

He was one of the nine Hashira, a group of elite warriors in the Demon Slayer Corps, specifically being the Flame Hashira. Rengoku is known for his cheerful and honorable nature, devoted to protecting the weak from the demons. He was a role model of Tanjiro Kamado, and even after his demise, his influence still continues to strengthen the boy's resolve on ending the demon race.

He was voiced by Satoshi Hino in the Japanese version of the anime and by Mark Whitten in the English version.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • He is honorable and loyal when it comes to doing his duty as a Demon Slayer, willing to protect others from harm.
  • He trained his brother Senjuro to use a sword during his time as a newbie before becoming a Hashira.
  • He deeply cared for his father, no matter how cynical or hostile he got.
  • At first he disagreed with Kagaya's order to not have Nezuko killed for being a demon, but after witnessing her refusal to eat Sanemi Shinazugawa, he was the third Hashira (after Giyu and Mitsuri) to acknowledge her and therefore thought of her as one of them despite her current status.

The Kyojuro Rengoku Gaidan[]

  • He helped trained Mitsuri Kanroji, making him responsible for her status in becoming a Demon Slayer.
  • Due to his father's status, he decided to fulfill his father's place, attending the Hashira Meeting, wanting to become the Flame Hashira in his father's place.
    • During the meeting, he defended himself from Sanemi, while refusing to attack back, stating that swordsmen are forbidden to fight each other, while also saying he will never harm a human being.
  • He battled against Lower Two Kizuki Demon, Hairo, succeeding in killing the demon. Because of his success, he became the new Flame Hashira.

The Mugen Train Arc[]

  • He express his interest in making Tanjiro his tsuguko, even including Zenitsu and Inosuke as they express their interest in becoming his tsugukos as well.
  • Protected the people on the Mugen Train from two demons.
  • Thanks to his strong willpower, he was able to prevent one of Enmu's pawns from destroying his spiritual core.
  • Stated his belief in Tanjiro as he went to fight Enmu.
  • He protected everyone within the Train after Enmu gained possession of it from being killed and eaten, alongside Nezuko and Zenitsu.
  • He helped heal Tanjiro's wound by assisting him to properly use the latter's Concentration Breathing.
  • He fought Akaza and protected those out of the train, including Tanjiro and Inosuke, from ever getting involved with the battle.
    • During the fight, Akaza offered to have Rengoku join him as a Demon to continue living on. However, he rejects it due to the fact that dying and living is what life was meant to be despite everything that had happened. This also proves Akaza serves as a foil to Rengoku.
    • Despite being fatally wounded by Akaza due to him punching through his solar plexus, Rengoku still made one last effort in killing the Upper Three demon, using all his strength to slice through the demon's neck while holding him til the sun rises.
    • He didn't die in vain after Akaza killed him during their fight and when he escaped. He fulfilled his duties as a Hashira into protecting Tanjiro and the rest, and his final words would later lead him into being encouraged and left with hinted notes about other Flame Breathing Tecniques.

Other Acts[]

  • His posthumous role and death has led a big impact for the main characters, Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke to continue moving forward and soon defeat Muzan. In addition, his final words inspired Tanjiro.
  • Thanks to his message on telling his father to take care of himself, it made Shinjuro to quit drinking and regret his behavior towards him and Senjuro, leading him into becoming a better man.
  • His influence continued to inspire Tanjiro and other characters such as Inosuke, Tengen, Mitsuri, and Muichiro, showing how much of an impact he had on the series.
  • He was one of the people in the afterlife, alongside the other deceased Hashira to save Tanjiro from Muzan's corruption of him while his body was getting cured by Kanao, also ending Muzan's legacy and terror for good permanently before being reincarnated for their heroic deeds.

Trivia[]

  • Kyojuro is one of only four Hashiras to use a standard Nichirin katana. The other three are Giyu Tomioka, Muichiro Tokito, and Sanemi Shinazugawa.
