“ | Take our son, and RUN AWAY! | „ |
~ Li Shan telling his wife to take Po and run. |
Li Shan is a major character in the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
He is the biological father of Po, who like his son, has great skill in eating and adorns a similar appearance to him, with the only difference being his attire and having a slightly different appearance and height.
He is voiced by Bryan Cranston who also played Joseph Brody in the 2014 Godzilla film.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Prior to the events of the series, he defended his son Po from Shen's wolves and told his wife to take their son and run away as far as she can while he continued to defend his family and other Pandas from the attack to the point he was believed to have been killed in the battle as well, meaning that if it weren't for him, Po would've likely been killed when Shen's army attacked the village and thus, would not have been able to perform the many admirable deeds he would later throughout his journey.
- Upon receiving the universe's message from Oogway, he proceeded to go on and search for his son Po and upon finding him, helped him learn what it meant to be a panda.
- While he did initially lie to Po about knowing Chi and deliberately tried to stop him from fighting Kai and save the valley, he only did so for protective reasons, as he was fearful that he would lose his son a second time (Which nearly did happen since Po was forced to send himself to the Spirit Realm to prevent Kai from taking the remaining Pandas' Chi and the others). Furthermore, once he was confronted by Po and after getting pep talked by Mr. Ping, who reassured him that he's also lied to Po before and it's merely a part of being a parent, he would proceed to not only feel remorse for his past actions but would even go on to help Po fight Kai's army.
- He and Mr. Ping united the pandas together and even convinced Po to train them in the ways of Kung Fu. Furthermore, it was also his words that made Po realize his mistake and properly teach his father and the other Pandas Kung Fu. Afterwards, they would later go on to help him take down Kai the Collector.
- He convinced the rest of the pandas as well as his friends and family to help Po defeat Kai once in the Spirit Realm by transferring their energy to him before his Chi could be stolen, this gave him the final push he needed to finally defeat Kai once and for all. By defeating Kai, this allowed him to free all of the Jade Warriors, including the Furious Five, Shifu, and even Oogway before returning back to the Mortal Realm.
- Even though he assured Mr. Ping that Po will be fine when he went out to fight the Chameleon, Li was truthfully worried about him also and they decided to find him together.
- Although he did leave an entire gang on water after wrecking the building they were in, this was purely accidental because it was caused by his large body size and he knew it was completely out of his control once it happened. Furthermore, there's no confirmation that anyone died when this happened.
- He and Mr. Ping saved Po from falling to his death.
- He doesn't seem to hold any animosity towards Lord Shen or try and take revenge on him when he encounters him years later despite all the pain the peacock inflicted on him throughout his life and cheers when Po restores his Kung Fu and Shen in turn shows respect to Po, showing that he's likely found inner peace and has forgiven Shen much like Po did.
- While true he isn't as admirable as Po, Shifu or many of the other characters, Li Shan still stands out thanks to his limited screentime, low resources due to not knowing Kung Fu for most of the series, but still managed to be very admirable due to playing a crucial part in defeating Kai the Collector, as well as defending Po and other Pandas when he was little and even putting his own life on the line to do so.
