Link, also known as the Hero of the Wild, is the main protagonist of the "Era of the Wilds" saga within Nintendo‘s The Legend of Zelda franchise.
He is the latest known chronological incarnation of Link in The Legend of Zelda timeline, who serves as the appointed knight of Princess Zelda and one of the Champions of Hyrule determined to defeat Calamity Ganon.
However, in a decisive confrontation with a corrupted Guardian who was attacking him and the princess, Link refused to give up protecting Zelda and was badly wounded. He was sent to the Shrine of Resurrection where he slept for 100 years, until he awoke with amnesia. After freeing the Divine Beasts and recovering his memories, Link defeated Ganon, allowing Zelda to seal him away for good.
Several years later, he and Zelda were investigating a new phenomenon called Gloom underneath Hyrule Castle, where they would encounter a mysterious mummy who drew out all of the strength of him and separated him from Zelda. However, someone rescued him, and when Link awakened he would embark on a journey to find Zelda and uncover the mysteries of her disappearance.
In an alternate timeline, he serves as a soldier for the Hyrulean army who is appointed to protect the princess after his heroics. He then is able to obtain the Master Sword and save his world from Ganon due to the time traveling of the Diminutive Guardian Terrako.
His vocal effects were provided by Kengo Takanashi.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He is always willing to go out of his way to help anyone in need, even when there is nothing in it for him. While in his first adventure around the world he would show signs of feeling entitled to a reward for completing side quests (such as when he asked Toren if he was “forgetting something” when the latter didn’t give him a reward for doing what he asked), he would arguably subvert this trait in his second adventure, in which he undertakes more beneficial optional quests and his sense of entitlement is not shown.
- He is extremely loyal to both King Rhoam and Princess Zelda, attempting to protect both of them from dangerous threats to his full potential and not interfering in their familial squabbles, though he does commit related beneficial actions, like comforting Zelda when she was filled with stress pushed on by her father and in the alternate timeline, obeying Rhoam when he ordered him to force his daughter to run away from the Guardians despite the king’s life being in danger.
- While he can be lethal in battle, he only ever uses lethal force when necessary to defend himself or others, or if facing particularly dangerous opponents, with his battles with Master Kohga (as the latter mostly acted with aggression) being an example of this. All other unnecessary actions (as well as rude responses to characters) he may commit are non-canon and up to the player.
- While he did technically break the law at least three times by disguising himself to enter Gerudo Town in the main timeline, it was only due to good intentions such as catching up with Zelda and speaking to Riju so she could aid him in freeing Divine Beast Vah Naboris. Moreover, the first time he did so, Urbosa approved and gave him the information needed to pass into the town.
Main Timeline[]
Pre-BotW[]
- While he did act quite aloof to the other champions at first, including not speaking to them, which frustrated Revali as he mistook his silence for scorn, it was only because of the pressure of saving the world from Calamity Ganon and the fact that everyone depends on him to do so instead of any negative emotions or qualities. He still earned the Champions’ respect (except Revali at first) for his kind and heroic deeds to them as shown below.
- He went with Mipha to Ploymus Mountain to slay the Lynel that was terrorizing the Zora with no hesitation after she told him about the problem, even saving the latter's life from it. Before this, he told her not to assist him out of fear that she would be in danger.
- He saved Daruk from a sneak attack by a monster on Death Mountain.
- He destroyed a malfunctioning Guardian that was a threat to several researchers and soldiers by deflecting a blast with a pot, thus saving their lives. This bravery earned King Rhoam’s consideration for him to become Zelda’s appointed knight.
- He helped Daruk learn to control Divine Beast Vah Rudania.
- He persevered in his duty of attending to and following Princess Zelda despite her attempts to evade him due to her resentment.
- He saved Princess Zelda from an assassination attempt by the Yiga Clan at Gerudo Desert, despite the fact Zelda treated him with hostility beforehand (e.g. fleeing to Gerudo Town so Link could not see her). This would change Zelda’s mind about him and cause her to open up to him.
- He opened up to Zelda about his stress spurred on from his destiny of saving the world, showing no resentment to her for being uncivil to him, and gave the princess emotional support during the Great Calamity. This included comforting her while she broke down into tears because of her father, the Champions, and many people dying due to her sealing power not awakening by that time.
- Even when near death, Link still tried to defend Zelda when they were at the mercy of the corrupted Guardians, despite being badly wounded and her pleas for him to flee the area. It was at this moment that the princess was finally able to awaken her power to shut down the Guardians.
Breath of the Wild[]
Story Events[]
- After seeking out Impa and unlocking the camera function on his Sheikah Slate, he took a picture of the Fairy Fountain on Pikango’s request so the latter wouldn’t have to walk as far to the Fountain. This would make Pikango an important helper in regaining Link’s memories as the artist gave clues to the whereabouts of his photos.
- He freed the four Champion Pilots' Divine Beasts as well as their spirits, including Revali even though the latter was cold and aloof towards him out of jealousy and resentment. Through these actions, he also saved the hometowns of the Champions from danger and destruction. This consisted of:
- Responding to Prince Sidon’s plea of help from a Hylian in order to save his people. He later found and then used 20 shock arrows to subdue Vah Ruta alongside Sidon, before entering the Divine Beast and defeating Waterblight Ganon. By doing these deeds, he freed Mipha’s spirit after 100 years of painful imprisonment and saved Zora’s Domain, and to an extent, all of Hyrule, from being flooded by perpetual rains caused by Ruta.
- Releasing Yunobo from a gang of monsters’ prison so he could deliver the painkillers to his suffering boss Bludo, before setting out with him to appease Vah Rudania. He then defeated Fireblight Ganon, thereby releasing Daruk’s spirit, removing any interference in Bludo’s mining operations, and ultimately saving Goron City from the risk of a volcanic eruption.
- Appealing to Teba to help defeat Divine Beast Vah Medoh, and then doing so with bomb arrows. He then defeated Windblight Ganon, releasing Revali’s spirit and saving Rito Village from destruction by Medoh.
- Seeking out and navigating the Yiga Clan Hideout and then defeating Master Kohga in the lair to bring the ancient Gerudo artifact the Thunder Helm back to Riju so she could help him appease Vah Naboris. After doing so, he defeated Thunderblight Ganon, releasing Urbosa’s spirit and preventing Naboris from endangering people in Gerudo Desert and Gerudo Town with its wild and dangerous storms.
- He completed the Champion’s Ballad and obtained the Master Cycle Zero upon Zelda’s request, gaining more strength to defeat Ganon.
- He used his extra lives and strength to reclaim the Master Sword in order to use it to defeat Ganon.
- He destroyed Calamity Ganon with the Master Sword (and optionally with the aid of the Divine Beasts and deceased Champions), thereby saving the entire world from its scourge, relieving Zelda from years of strain, and finally returning peace and hope to Hyrule.
Side Quests[]
- He recovered Hestu's stolen maracas from Bokoblins.
- He helped Hudson build Tarrey Town.
- He defeated the Yiga Blademaster sent to kill Dorian, saving the latter's life.
Between BotW and TotK[]
- After the Great Calamity, he remained by Zelda’s side out of loyalty and kindness, aiding her with her goals of rebuilding Hyrule after the trauma and destruction caused by the Calamity. It is implied that he invited Zelda to stay in his house, as the castle was inhabitable at the time and documents in Tears of the Kingdom strongly suggest it.
- When a new strange phenomenon called Gloom started infecting many people in Hyrule, he assisted Zelda in researching the odd substance, going down into the depths of Hyrule Castle with her to investigate it.
Tears of the Kingdom[]
Story Events[]
- He saved Zelda from several Keese when he and the princess were trudging through the depths of Hyrule Castle.
- He attempted to save Zelda from falling to her death immediately after he was attacked and badly wounded by Ganondorf, even risking his life to do so.
- He set out on a journey to find Zelda after awakening in the Room of Awakening.
- He took a picture of a mysterious statue for Josha, as the technician wanted to investigate it.
- He investigated the regional phenomena in the primary settlements of Hyrule (triggered by Ganondorf as a result of the Upheaval) in order to find out more about Zelda’s disappearance. While doing so, he saved the citizens of the settlements from the phenomenons and aided his friends in finding their respective Secret Stones so they could become the Sages destined to defeat the Demon King. This included:
- Helping find Tulin after he stole away from Rito Village out of frustration and returning his Swallow Bow to him by defeating the Aerocuda that stole it, which helped the young Rito regain his confidence and show him where he sighted Zelda. He then aided Tulin in unlocking the Wind Temple and defeating Colgera, which allowed Tulin access to the Secret Stone that would make him a Sage and saved all of the Rito in Rito Village from starving to death from a famine brought on by Colgera’s blizzard.
- Breaking Yunobo out of his brainwashing brought on by a disguised Phantom Ganon, allowing him to drop his tyranny over YunoboCo, and later helping him defeat the rock monster Moragia while searching for Zelda. He later unlocked the Fire Temple and defeated Marbled Gohma along with Yunobo, which gave Yunobo access to his Secret Stone and saved Goron society from crashing due to destroying the Marbled Rock Roast that drugged all of the miners employed in YunoboCo.
- Fixing a broken slate pointed out by Jiahto and using its contents to gain access to the origin of the sludge plaguing the Zora people. He then defeated the Sludge Like that infected Dorephan with the assistance of Sidon, and joined the latter in traveling to the Water Temple. After that, he unlocked the temple and helped Sidon defeat Mucktorock (the sludge’s source) which gave Sidon access to his Secret Stone and saved all of the Zora from being infected from the sludge and/or dying from thirst.
- Helping Riju with her target practice, and later aiding her and Buliara in protecting Gerudo Town from being invaded by Gibdos. He then teamed up with the young chieftain to temporarily defeat Queen Gibdo and access the Lightning Temple. Lastly, he unlocked the temple, and assisted Riju in defeating Queen Gibdo once and for all, thus giving Riju access to her Secret Stone and saving the Gerudo from the threat of the Gibdo.
- He discovered the Abandoned Central Mine upon Josha’s request to piece together a mural she located and utilized his abilities to defeat Master Kohga (who wanted to find out how to revive Ganondorf) temporarily.
- He aided Impa and Cado’s quest in investigating the Geoglyphs around Hyrule by facilitating the view of the first one and then discovering the locations of others in the Forgotten Temple.
- He faced and temporarily defeated Phantom Ganon at Hyrule Castle, finding out that it masqueraded as Princess Zelda all along.
- He searched for a fifth sage by helping Paya and Tauro out with investigating the Ring Ruins. He then found the Construct Factory and defeated the Seized Construct in order to meet Mineru and recruit her on his quest.
- He defeated Phantom Ganon in the Great Deku Tree, freeing the tree from its Gloom infection and saving the Korok from a fate worse than death by unfreezing them from their static states. He then used the Deku Tree’s information to reclaim the Master Sword once again to kill Ganondorf.
- He defeated Ganondorf and his army with the Sages and Zelda as the Light Dragon, saving everyone in Hyrule from being wiped out from the Demon King’s plan to remake the world.
- Using the power boost granted to him by the spirits of King Rauru and Queen Sonia, he undid Zelda's draconification and reverted her back to her Hylian form. He then grabbed on to her midair and captured her in a lake, stabilizing her fall and making sure she was safe.
- In the epilogue, he vowed to protect Princess Zelda and ensure Hyrule’s eternal peace alongside the Sages.
Side Quests[]
- He defeated the pirate monsters that invaded Lurelin Village, and helped rebuild it.
- He aided the Hylian army and volunteer Monster Control crew in fighting and defeating monsters around the world.
Alternate Timeline[]
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity[]
- He attempted to save Impa from a horde of Bokoblins that were chasing her.
- He saved Zelda's life from a blast from a Guardian Stalker that had been corrupted by Harbinger Ganon.
- He aided Mipha in rescuing some injured Zora Captains and Sidon from monsters including a Lynel.
- He assisted Daruk in defeating the monsters swarming on Death Mountain including an Igneo Talus and awakening Divine Beast Vah Rudania.
- He attacked Revali out of self-defense, not malice and he does indeed stop when Zelda pleads them to, as does Revali. Even when Revali constantly insulted him, Link did not hold anything against him and remained calm, and is still willing to save his life. It was due to his noble actions that he eventually earned the Rito Warrior’s respect.
- He helped Urbosa defeat the Yiga Clan attacking Gerudo Town and sent them running.
- He pushed away Terrako when the Diminutive Guardian jumped in front of Zelda presumably to sacrifice itself to save her from Sooga’s kunai, thus saving both the guardian and the princess.
- He assisted in defeating the monsters that swarmed Korok Forest, thus protecting the forest and lessening Hestu’s fears.
- He saved Zelda from Astor by obtaining the Master Sword, as the sword’s light destroyed the Hollows, after he fought off the wicked contraptions. He then defeated the evil seer with the sword, saving Korok Forest from his threat.
- He protected Zelda and fought off numerous infected Guardians and monsters when the Calamity awoke in Hyrule Castle.
- When King Rhoam told him that it his duty to protect the princess at Hyrule Castle, he forced her to run away from her father, as her father wanted for her to be safe over attempting to save him.
- Thanks to Terrako, who opened time portals for four people of each tribe, Link was given enough time to save the lives of the Champions, so he assisted them in defeating the Blight Ganons.
- When Astor revived the Blight Ganons, he told Zelda and Impa to flee and single-handedly faced all four of them in order to protect the princess and the Sheikah. This selfless act allowed Zelda to finally awaken her dormant sealing power out of concern for his well-being.
- While he did temporarily destroy Terrako, it was because he had no choice due to the Guardian being corrupted by malice to attack Zelda. He then briefly mourned Terrako’s damaged state alongside the princess, other Champions, and warriors.
- He helped save the world from Calamity Ganon by dealing the final blow, allowing Zelda to seal him away for good.
- He, alongside his friends, obtained the materials that were necessary to reconstruct Terrako after his sacrifice, which led to the Dinimutive Guardian and the princess emotionally reuniting.
