Luigi is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Princess Peach) of Illumination's Super Mario film series.
He is the loyal brother of Mario, who is separated and ends up in the Dark Lands where he is abducted by the minions of Bowser, while Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom.
He is voiced by Charlie Day.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[]
- Ever since childhood, he has been a caring brother to Mario and would often give him a helping hand whenever problems arises.
- He and Mario started a plumber business to help people and separate themselves from Foreman Spike.
- He looks up to his brother for his determination and bravery.
- In return, he always stands by his side and has his back.
- Unlike Mario, he doesn't want to get into a confrontation with Foreman Spike when Mario tries to stand up to him for his bullying and tried to convince Mario not to do so, knowing Spike would beat him up.
- Though he broke Francis' bone on the floor, it was clearly accidental because he didn't notice it and apologized to the dog.
- He and Mario saved Francis from falling out the window despite the dog trying to attack them, which spoiled their job of helping his owners with their water system.
- This is an extra noteworthy deed considering that Francis' owners were, based on the quality of their apartment, rich, which could have given the brothers a considerable payout had the dog not sabotaged them for no reason other than out of sheer pettiness.
- He cheers up Mario after their father accuses him of dragging Luigi down when it came to their life choices, assuring him that wasn't the case.
- It's worth noting that he, along with the other members of their family despite their skeptics, expressed visible disappointment towards his father for inadvertently insulting Mario to the point of driving him to his room.
- He and Mario managed to prevent Brooklyn from being flooded by opening a water lid to drain the water and they attempt to shut it down. It was later revealed that they were successful.
- Though he ended up destroying a Dry Bone, this was clearly out of accident and self-defense because he tried to survive himself from them, not to mention it was out of pure luck.
- After being captured by Bowser, Luigi tried to deny his connection with Mario when interrogated by Bowser, only confessing because Bowser tortured him painfully by his mustache.
- Despite confessing, he went out of his way to show how much he views Mario as "the best guy in the world", even assuring Bowser that he has good reason to fear Mario as a love rival because whoever Princess Peach is, any princess with good taste would find Mario attractive for the kind of person he is.
- After being rescued, he happily reunited with Mario.
- When Mario is almost killed by Bowser while attempting to claim the Super Star, Luigi manages to step in and use a sewer lid to protect Mario, allowing them to use the Super Star to save the day.
- He assisted Mario in defusing Bowser’s war in Brooklyn by using the Super Star to beat down the Koopa Army and defeated Bowser by pummeling him into submission, saving the Mushroom Kingdom and Brooklyn once and for all.
- He also saves Spike and gives him a friendly hello after getting rid of Bowser's minions who were terrorizing him.
- His brave actions in saving Mario and both Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom resulted in Luigi already making a positive first impression on Peach, Toad and Donkey Kong.
- While he used to be incompetent at the beginning of the movie due to how much of a clumsy coward he is, he later managed to subvert it at the climax of the movie.
- Despite not having too much screen time, he manages to pass the admirable standards due to the moment where he saved Mario from Bowser's fire, as had it not been for him, Mario would have died, and no one would have been able to save Brooklyn or defeat Bowser.
- While Mario, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and Toad are more admirable, it would be unfair him to compare them, as Luigi spends some time in the film trapped in a cage as one of Bowsers prisoners, meaning he couldn't do anything else.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie[]
- He friendly greets Bowser from his playhouse prison and compliments his painting of himself and Peach, unlike Mario who insulted it.
- When Bowser Jr. arrives at Peach's castle, he introduces himself and tries to deescalate the situation.
- He saves Mario from Bowser Jr. when the latter tried to attack him with a mace by striking him in the face.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the three versions of Luigi that is considered Pure Good along with his mainstream counterpart and comic counterpart, unlike his paper counterpart, who is considered Near Pure Good.
- He was originally a Heroic Benchmark, due to him initially being considered bog-standard and failing the admirable standards to Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, and Toad. However, after a further discussion, the moment when he saves Mario from Bowser's fire is one of the main reasons he was moved to Pure Good since Mario would have died, enabling Bowser to terrorize the Mushroom Kingdom and Brooklyn with nobody capable of stopping him and saving both worlds, if it weren’t for Luigi's brave actions.
