Before you guys came along, my life was defined by rules, set on a path of someone else's choosing... But only a true loser would live such a rigid life! I... I will win... Even if it means going up against the entire world!
~ Makoto to her fellow Phantom Thieves.

Makoto Niijima, codenamed Queen while in the Metaverse, is one of the main characters and party members of the Persona 5 sub-series within the Persona series.

She is the younger sister of the prosecutor turned lawyer Sae Niijima and the student council president of Shujin Academy. After confronting Junya Kaneshiro's Shadow in the Metaverse, she awakens to her Persona Johanna, and subsequently joins the Phantom Thieves of Hearts as its strategist.

She is voiced by Rina Satō in Japanese and by Cherami Leigh in English.

What Makes Her Pure Good?[]

  • Unlike most of the Phantom Thieves, Makoto sheds her corrupting qualities over time.
  • Puts herself in danger to help the Phantom Thieves learn more about Junya Kaneshiro, a dangerous Yakuza boss who blackmailed high school students into smuggling drugs, along with other crimes.
  • She was genuinely ashamed of being an accessory to Principal Kobawakawa's greed and self aggrandizement, and for not doing nearly enough to protect her fellow students from Kamoshida's abuse, to the point of calling herself scum.
  • Later teams up with and joins the Phantom Thieves, successfully changing said Yakuza boss' heart.
  • Helps Futaba Sakura get over her social anxiety.
  • Changes Kunikazu Okumura's heart, which in turns saves Haru Okumura from her abusive father.
  • Uses Futaba's USB on her sister's laptop to try and gain information on the psychotic breakdowns and mental shutdowns.
  • Helps her sister redeem herself, which then leads to Sae saving Joker from being killed by Goro Akechi.
  • Helps the team realize that Goro Akechi is the traitor, and then confronts him in Shido's Palace.
  • Helps take down Masayoshi Shido, a corrupt politician who is behind most of the events that transpired in the game.
  • Helps the team defeat Yaldabaoth, a false god who is the true conductor of the game's events and wanted to imprison humanity in a totalitarian state.
  • While she and the rest of the girls beaten up off-screen Ryuji after learning that he was still alive and they thought that he died, and they did that to him for make them worry, at the end it was heating-up period since in Persona 5 Royal, when Makoto talk about how Ryuji save them, she implies regret for how she and the girls reacted.
  • In Persona 5 Royal, she helps defeat Takuto Maruki and return reality to normal.
  • In Persona 5 Strikers, she helped stop more criminals, most notably Akira Konoe, a CEO of a multi-billion dollar IT company who acted as a Knight Templar all the while he ruined many peoples' live and tried to enslave everyone using EMMA, Kuon Ichinose, the creator of EMMA, and EMMA itself, who used countless people for its own gain in attempt to enslave the world.
  • Despite her more serious portrayal than the other Phantom Thieves, she does not darken the mood of the story in any way.

Trivia[]

  • Originally in the scene where she and the other girls beat Ryuji up for making them worry was left off-screen and right up showed what happened next and was a heating-up period for Makoto and Futaba, since they felt regret for how they reacted, that scene was going to show how Ryuji got beaten up by the others and also shown dialogues of them insulting Ryuji, and Makoto was also in them, not only that when Ryuji said that he almost died, Makoto like the others death-threatened Ryuji, as she said "I'll be sure to pick up your bones". If this version of said scene was kept in the final product, then Makoto wouldn't have qualified as Pure Good.
