Manolo Sánchez is the main protagonist of the 2014 computer-animated fantasy film The Book of Life.
He is the son of Carlos Sánchez, the longtime best friend of Joaquín Mondragon, and the best friend and love interest (later husband) of María Posada, as well as a bullfighter and guitarist. He also is the arch-nemesis of Chakal the Bandit King.
He is voiced and sung by Diego Luna.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- At first, he gave an old woman a loaf of bread (actually, a disguise for La Muerte) out of kindness.
- He faced and defeated a wild boar, preventing it from causing serious damage.
- Before María left, he offered her the piglet that was supposed to have been killed by a butcher.
- While his father raised him to be a bullfighter (and despite forbidding him to play music), he still enjoys playing music.
- He is one of the only ones in the arena to know that killing the bull was wrong, other people (including his father) were very cruel for not believing him that this was true.
- Unlike three useless people who ended up taking things over because they didn't know how to sing, Manolo sang calmly, leading María to be impressed.
- He asked her out on a sunrise date.
- After she sacrificed herself to prevent Manolo from being bitten, he screamed for help and when no one showed up, he brought her to everyone (he still agreed with them about her "death" being his fault), then he decided to lose his life for her.
- When he found out that Xibalba was trying to separate him from María, he went to the Land of the Forgotten to tell La Muerte the truth to make him regret what he did (although it wasn't easy).
- According to Candle Maker, it was Manolo who was writing his own story.
- Once Xibalba refused to give him back his life despite La Muerte knowing he cheated, Manolo made a deal with him to have a chance at reincarnation.
- Instead of killing Toro Muerto despite his assumption, he sings an apology, continuing even when Toro Meurto gets in a cheap shot when he tries to play the guitar, ultimately appeasing it and touching the hearts of everyone present (including Xibalba).
- It must be added that by asking for forgiveness, Manolo managed to extinguish the flame of hatred that he had and in the end he decided to remember them all so that they could rest in peace.
- He forgives his Father for being too hard on him and disowning him that he shouldn't be better Father to Manolo but he embraces with his Father
- He was willing to sacrifice himself to stop Chakal's suicide from destroying the entire city (it could also be that he saved the existence of his late family).
- Just before the sacrifice, he pushed Joaquín out of the way so he wouldn't die with them.
- Thanks to this story, Xibalba redeemed himself and reconciled with La Muerte.
- Although he felt jealous of Joaquín growing up as a "hero" and also being infatuated with María (and later quarreling with him recently), they still remain best friends.
