~ Maria to Shadow in Shadow Generations |
Maria Robotnik is a major character in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
She is the granddaughter of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the cousin of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, and the closest companion of Shadow the Hedgehog, whose positive influence on the hedgehog is the main reason why he serves as an important hero in the franchsie.
In English, she is voiced by Moriah Angeline in Sonic Adventure 2, by Rebecca Honig in Shadow the Hedgehog, who also voiced Cream the Rabbit respectively, and by Stephanie Sheh in Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings animated series and the game Shadow Generations. In Japanese, she is voiced by Yuri Shiratori.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- She was always optimistic no matter what the circumstances were, especially the fact that she knew she was eventually going to die.
- She is a major positive influence on Shadow, as she is often the main reason why Shadow is a protector of Earth, wanting to honor Maria's dying wish.
- Unlike Shadow and especially Black Doom, she never viewed humans as an inferior species.
- As revealed in Sonic Frontiers, she was beloved by her family even after her death, to the point she overshadowed Eggman despite being long gone by the time he was a child (which is heavily implied to be one of his main causes for being a villain). Despite this, she was remembered as someone so nice Eggman still can't hate her, only wondering if his artificial daughter, Sage, is anything like Maria.
- While the admirable standards in the Sonic franchise are very high, Maria still stands out for her positive influence on Shadow, who is one of the franchise's most important heroes. Her kindness towards Shadow made him remember the promise between the two that Shadow would protect the Earth, with Amy Rose even having had to mention Maria's promise so that Shadow can change his ways and save the Earth instead of destroying it. Following her return in Shadow Generations, her positive influence on Shadow continues to strengthen as her influence removed Black Doom's manipulation on Shadow and allowed him to defeat the evil being once and for all.
Background[]
- During her time in the Ark, she would become close friends with Shadow and Abraham Tower, viewing the two as her younger brothers.
- She often hangs out with Shadow, watching and admiring Earth. She would also comfort Shadow whenever he was distressed over the meaning of his life and his inability to cure Maria.
- When Gerald was making a video recording to explain to Shadow about his purpose and to destroy the Black Arms, she joins in the video, reassuring her grandfather that she and Shadow will protect the Earth. This recording would play a huge role in motivating Shadow to defeat Black Doom and save the Earth in Shadow the Hedgehog.
- In Shadow the Hedgehog, Maria tries to convince Shadow to help her grandfather and the scientists and if Shadow starts killing members of the Ark, she will ask him to stop.
- She saved Shadow's life from G.U.N. at the cost of her life. Before dying, she begged Shadow to promise to give humanity a chance.
Shadow Generations[]
- She stands up to Black Doom, despite the latter being a powerful and dangerous being.
- When Shadow was about to lose control of himself, Maria calmed him down and said she didn’t want him to be driven by darkness, she wanted him to be happy with peace in his heart, which Shadow listened to.
- When her and Gerald are sent back to their time period, she prevents Shadow from stopping them from going back even though she doesn’t know what will happen because Shadow’s friends need his help and she knows she will see him again, and if fate draws them apart, she will always be in his heart.
Trivia[]
- She was originally considered to be Pure Good by many and even approved as such, but as the admirable standards changed overtime by having higher standards, she eventually got rejected and approved as Near Pure Good as it turns out that she fails the admirable standards to Amy Rose, who managed to redeem three villains (Trip, Gamma and Shadow) with similar resources. However, after the release of Shadow Generations with some discussions that she passes the admirable standards due to her role in helping Shadow truly get rid of Black Doom's influence on his life, she was re-approved as Pure Good.
