~ Mario introducing himself. |
Mario (マリオ, Mario) is the titular main protagonist of Nintendo's video game franchise of the same name.
He is a short, stocky, Italian-American plumber who lived in the district of Brooklyn with his younger twin brother, Luigi, where they worked as plumbers in a business called "Super Mario Bros. Plumbing". Afterwards, he and Luigi reside in the Mushroom Kingdom, where Mario often goes with his adventures by rescuing his love interest, Peach, from his ever-obsessed, tyrannical arch-nemesis, Bowser.
Since his first appearance in 1981, Mario quickly became the most iconic and well-known video game character, as well as an established pop culture icon in video game history, appearing in over 200 video games.
He was voiced by Charles Martinet from Super Mario 64 to Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope (for over 30 years), and by Kevin Afghani from Super Mario Bros. Wonder onwards, both of whom also voice his younger twin brother, Luigi.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- In general, he is a fantastic brother, friend, hero, person, etc.
- He constantly saves Princess Peach from Bowser and other villains.
- He deeply cares about his younger twin brother Luigi, and is willing to risk his life to protect him from harm.
- He's always trying to help the Mushroom Kingdom.
- Despite having a silent personality, he has a clear moral agency and always does the right thing.
- Even when it slows him down in his main quest, he's pretty much always willing to help innocent bystanders with whatever problems they're dealing with, due to finding himself unable to ignore those in need.
- Even when he shows feelings of being slighted, he never returns his enemies' insults. While showing anger or severity at their villainy when confronting them, he never reacts fiercely.
- In certain games, like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Yoshi's Island DS and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, he has saved the whole universe from destruction caused by Bowser.
- He rarely, if ever, holds a grudge against his enemies. For example, he never goes out of his way to act hostile towards Bowser and shows respect for him despite the number of times he's kidnapped Peach, terrorized the Mushroom Kingdom and tried to kill him, only stopping him every time he comes back to cause more trouble. He also, on his part, has no issue teaming up with Bowser to defeat greater threats, as shown in Super Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the Mario Kart franchise, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and the Super Smash Bros. franchise.
- In Super Mario Sunshine, he cleaned up all the pollution caused by Shadow Mario (which was Bowser Jr. in disguise) and returned the Shine Sprites to the Shine Gate, restoring Isle Delfino to its former state and saving its inhabitants' way of life from being endangered. This is also despite some of the Piantas being quick to falsely assume Mario was the one who polluted the island and were rude to him as a result.
- At the end of Super Mario Odyssey's main story, he achieves global peace by fixing all the problems Bowser caused in each of the kingdoms he invaded, such as returning the items he stole from each of them for his forced wedding with Peach, and undoing any damage that was done in the process. A couple of examples include restoring the Steam Gardens to their former glory by allowing the Steam Gardeners to grow flowers again in the Wooded Kingdom and restoring power/electricity to New Donk City in the Metro Kingdom, as well as going on to recruit musicians and restore the Underground Power Plant to ensure the success of the city's annual festival.
- While he did become obsessed with outdoing Bowser's proposal to Peach and later stomping him in the end, he wouldn't show this behavior again, making it a case where he shows genuine remorse.
- After they were both briefly rejected by Peach, he actually showed some sympathy towards Bowser, seemingly recognizing what it feels like to be rejected, despite the fact that he tried to kill Mario earlier.
- When he's not busy doing hero work, he contributes to creating go-kart races, parties, tennis rounds, golf courses, baseball games, etc. to spend time with his friends and family. He also even invites his enemies to put their differences aside out of peace.
- He helped save the Sprixie Princesses from Bowser in Super Mario 3D World.
- While he used to bully Wario in their youth, he has long made up for it and never acts rude to him in the present day, even when the latter constantly antagonizes him.
- Despite normally being enemies, in Bowser's Fury, he agreed to help Bowser Jr. save his father and restore him back to normal after Bowser Jr. accidentally turned his father into Fury Bowser by painting his entire body while he was sleeping as a prank (that's gone horribly wrong).
- From his stern look when he was first listening to Bowser Jr.'s plea, it becomes clear Mario doubted Bowser Jr.'s ignorance of why Bowser went on a rampage and maybe even suspected he caused the problem himself, but this didn't stop him from cheerfully agreeing to help him resolve it anyway.
- Although he stole Wario's statue in the first Wario Land game, this is a heat-up moment, as he doesn't show this behavior again, and stealing a statue is worth much less than stealing an entire castle like Wario did to Mario, making this a fair punishment.
- In the spin-off titles, he:
- Stopped villains from taking over the world/Mushroom Kingdom (alongside Luigi) such as Cackletta, Antasma, Princess Shroob, Fawful, Reclusa, and Bowser in the Mario & Luigi series.
- Saved the Pi'illo folk from fates worse than death in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (alongside Luigi).
- Saved numerous Toads (alongside his brother and paper counterpart) in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. He also helped stopping both the normal and paper counterparts of Bowser from trying to destroy the Paperverse book, thereby saving the Paperworld.
- At one point in the game, the three of them saved hundreds of Toads that were enslaved by both counterparts of Bowser.
- Him sacrificing Yoshi is only due to gameplay and isn't his choice whatsoever, especially since this is not required to finish the 2D games.
- Him "killing Toads who have been turned into bricks" is completely false, as the Super Mario Bros. manual actually states that "only bricks with items in them are Toads", which he doesn't break.
Trivia[]
- Although the main Mario does not truly have an official canon, his Nintendo made games being Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 1-3, World, 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey are all official games by Nintendo, they are treated to be in one canon in some way, though Galaxy 1 and 2 might have reset the timeline, making different versions of the character.
- Mario became Pure Good at the end of Super Mario Sunshine, but in the first Mario games, he wasn't that good (especially in Donkey Kong Jr. where he was the main antagonist there, though this case is no longer canon or even acknowledged within the main Mario timeline), with his current personality not being completely defined.
- He, Link, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Luigi and Ness make up the 6 of the 12 fighters from the original Super Smash Bros. to be Pure Good.
- Mario, alongside Luigi in their builder outfits, are the icons of the Construction template.
- He is the first PG to be headlined on this wiki.
- His cartoon and manga counterparts can't qualify as PG due to them being too jerkish, arrogant and mischievous.
- His paper counterpart is the second incarnation of Mario to count as Pure Good; his movie counterpart being Pure Good as well. This makes him and Princess Peach as the only characters in the Mario franchise where they have more than two incarnations to qualify as PG.
- Both him and Bowser's paper equivalents have the same status as their main counterparts.
- Of the PG siblings on this wiki, he and Luigi are the only ones who are twins, and the only ones who have the same status as alternate counterparts.
