Bowser: You just don't know when to quit!
Mario: Yeah, I've been told that before.
~ Mario before taking on Bowser and his army.
Yeah, well. My dad thinks I'm a joke too.
~ Mario to Donkey Kong when having issues with their fathers.

Mario is the titular main protagonist of Illumination's 13th feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, based on the iconic video game franchise.

He is a plumber from Brooklyn, alongside his twin brother Luigi who got transported to Mushroom Kingdom and seeks help from Princess Peach to find his brother and gets asked by her to help save her kingdom from the tyrant king of Koopas, Bowser.

He is voiced by Chris Pratt, who also voiced Emmet Brickowski from The LEGO Movie and Barley Lightfoot from Onward.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • In a flashback of his childhood, his younger brother Luigi gets bullied by a kid who took the flag Luigi place on his block castle and kicking it down to pieces while laughing at his misery. Mario bravely jumps in, knocking the bully on the ground while taking the flag he was holding away from him and giving it back to Luigi, causing him to run away. Mario smiles at Luigi knowing that he'll always be there for him no matter what. Ever since he was a young kid, he has always been very protective of him.
  • He's a very caring older brother to Luigi and loves him very much.
  • The whole reason why he quit his job as a construction worker to start his own plumbing business with Luigi was because he wanted to help people and brake off from his former cranky boss, Foreman Spike.
  • He stood up for Luigi when he was being picked on by Spike, despite him being 3 times their sizes.
  • He and Luigi saved Francis the dog from falling to his death despite the canine trying to maul/hurt them for Luigi accidentally breaking his bone and ruining their first job.
  • He truly was not trying to weigh his brother down with his faults and decisions, something his father feared and accused him of (which is something that Luigi confronts him about in their room).
  • While it was partially done to fix his and his brother's reputations, he managed to fix the flooding problem Brooklyn was facing.
  • When he got separated from Luigi when he got transported into Mushroom Kingdom, he sought to find his brother and rescue him from Bowser and enlisted Princess Peach's help into doing so.
  • He politely gave a coin back to a random Toad.
  • Despite being astonished by Peach's beauty and athleticism when first meeting her, he never tried to attract her romantically, as his only priority was to save Luigi from Bowser, who ironically believed he was.
    • Even if he indeed developed feelings for her, he would never rush things, as he genuinely wants to know Peach better as a friend first. As Donkey Kong mocks Mario's friendly statements to Peach as if the former was flirting with the latter, Mario truthfully states that he was just trying to be nice.
    • Unlike Bowser, who is lustfully obsessive towards Peach, Mario only platonically bonds with her as they fight several obstacles together, though they both show signs of their feelings for each other starting to show.
  • Although he was a bit incompetent at first such as failing the obstacle course repeatedly, he subverted this by almost completing the obstacle course (he would have made it had it not been for a mechanical Pirahna Plant eating him at the last second).
    • He also came out more skilled nonetheless, which is why Peach chose to let him come with her.
  • Although Peach loudly stated to the Toads that he was "not important" to the quest of recruiting the Kong army to defeat Bowser, Mario never showed any anger or irritability towards her for the lack of recognition, preferring to proceed their journey with ease (likely because he only cared about Luigi).
  • He accepted Cranky Kong's challenge of fighting his son, Donkey Kong, in order to get the Kong army on their side to fight Bowser and rescue Luigi. Had Mario not been more forceful unlike Peach, they would never have been able to get the Kongs' support given her modest approach did little to persuade the stubborn king.
  • Despite constantly being beaten and belittled by Donkey Kong during their fight, Mario never threw in the towel and chose to keep fighting.
    • After beating him with the Cat Power-Up, he saved him from falling out of the arena, showing his good sportsmanship.
  • He saved Donkey Kong from drowning to death when they were blown off of Rainbow Road and started working better together upon arriving back in the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • He empathized and related with Donkey Kong's feelings of feeling inadequate in the eyes of their respective fathers when they considered them to be jokes.
  • Although Donkey Kong constantly insulted Mario even after they were on better terms, Mario wouldn't act the same way towards him, even if he was annoyed by it.
  • While he angrily told Donkey Kong to smash some stuff if it would make him feel better and also called him "Smash Monkey," this is justified as Donkey Kong started it.
  • When he and Donkey Kong returned to the Mushroom Kingdom, they help Peach fight off the Koopa Army and save the prisoners from being dunked into molten lava.
    • He also saved Luigi from falling into the lava at the last second, causing Luigi to be super pleased and reunited with Mario.
  • He saved the Mushroom Kingdom from being nuked by a giant Bomber Bill by diverting its attention towards him and tricking it into flying into the Warp Pipe he came from. This was also the first time where he was truly dedicated to saving the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Even after nearly being beaten to death and mocked by Bowser, Mario refused to give up despite the odds and confronted him and his entire army.
    • It's worth noting had he not done this, Bowser would have successfully killed Donkey Kong by gutting him with his claws.
  • With the Super Star's power, he and Luigi take down Bowser's army and Bowser himself in order to save Brooklyn from chaos.
  • Mario never held any grudges against his family, especially his father, for their previous doubts regarding his and Luigi's decision to start a plumbing business.
    • He even forgives his father in the aftermath of Bowser's defeat, as Mario and Luigi accept a proud hug from him and their mother.

Trivia[]

  • He is the third version of Mario to be Pure Good, joining his mainstream and paper counterparts.
  • Mario is the third animated character voiced by Chris Pratt who is Pure Good, with the first being Emmet Brickowski and the second being Barley Lightfoot.
    • Which is also contradicting the live-action characters that Chris Pratt portrayed that are often voted Near Pure Good or Inconsistently Admirable, such as Owen Grady from the Jurassic World trilogy and Peter Quill/Star-Lord from Marvel Cinematic Universe.
