“ | The toys out there, in Safe Haven... they're my family. I understand what Poppy wants, what she believes is right. Destroy the factory, destroy him. But I ask you to consider: If we throw everything away, everyone, just to kill the Prototype... How much do we waste? I know the others might believe it's right. That we should bury everything. But... (sigh) Let's just think about it. | „ |
~ Matthew Hallard questioning Poppy's plan of killing every toy. |
“ | I, uh... I-I'm-I'm not sure if this thingy is on, but, uh, I need to talk, and... I can't talk about this with anyone else. For the past few months, the fighting's been bad... Real bad. I've, uh... seen a lot of stuff I probably shouldn't. It's been hard to... keep my head straight. The others... They look to me to know what to do. To know where to go. For a long while, we had Poppy to tell us. Go here, go there, do this! And... it all made sense, too. Poppy was nice. I... can't find Poppy anywhere. I don't know what happened, or where she went. But it's scary here without her. Maybe she ran... Just like I have. I'm here. Outside the Prison, in front of... I'd almost forgotten it was all here. And seeing this again, it's... given me reason to think... I could make for the exit. It's all I wanted, for the longest time. But, there are others inside. Others... that aren't like me. They're hungry and scared like I am, but they're not me... They can't go where I can. But... they mean a lot to me. A lot more than I thought they did. And having seen what I have, knowing how they see me... How much they need me... I'm... going back. I-I wanted to make this in case I ever doubt or forget that. Just play this and remember. Yeah... Yeah! That's all. See ya. | „ |

Subject-1322C: Matthew Hallard later known as Doey the Doughman is the deuteragonist of Safe Haven, the fourth chapter of the 2021 indie horror video game Poppy Playtime.
He is one of the three children that make up Experiment-1322: Doey the Doughman, Playtime Co.'s second strongest experiment, and the leader/primary consciousness of the hybrid. A teenage orphan who looked after Playcare's other orphans like an older brother, he is now the one leading and protecting Safe Haven, the one place in the factory where the sapient toys are safe from the Prototype and his minions.
He was voiced by Michael Kovach who also voiced N in Murder Drones and SMG0 in SMG4.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Even before he got turned into Doey, Matthew was a kind and protective leader to the younger kids at Playcare who was beloved even by the factory's workers for his charisma and kindness. He was always empathetic towards others, reading stories to comfort the other children and carrying guilt for not being able to protect his parents in the accident that caused their deaths, despite it not being his fault.
- There's zero proof to support him having participated in the Hour of Joy. Even if he did, it's likely the fault of Kevin Barnes rather than Matthew.
- Following the Hour, he and Poppy founded the Safe Haven, a safe spot where all the toy refugees can be protected and fed. Doey has spent ten years protecting it, even as his allies, like the other Bigger Bodies Smiling Critters, were slowly being killed off.
- It's heavily implied he fought off the Prototype and the Doctor numerous times, enough for the latter to place countless traps made specifically for him and angrily refer to Doey as a "brutish glob of clay".
- At one point, he almost broke and escaped the factory, but willingly chose to stay inside so he could protect the small, defenceless toys that looked up to him, even at the cost of his mental well-being. He even created a VHS tape to help him remind himself of what he's fighting for in case he ever forgets.
- Had Medic heal Kissy Missy when she appeared injured.
- Even though he got frustrated at Poppy for leading the Prototype down, he quickly holds in his anger and also it was fairly justified considering she could have and eventually accidentally did get them killed.
- Calls out Poppy abandoning him and the rest of the Safe Haven toys that needed her for 10 years, saying that even if she "didn't have a choice" her abandoning them has harmed those she wishes to protect, as they have been hunted and starved out by the Doctor & the Prototype.
- While he does assist Poppy in her plan of destroying the factory, he makes it clear he's not fond of the idea of blowing up all the innocent toys and tries to convince her of another way.
- He aids the Intruder throughout their mission, saving them from Yarnaby (and indirectly Pianosaurus, though this was on Jack Ayers), and having them kill the Doctor and get his Omni-Hand.
- When Doey gets hit with the nitrogen trap set by Harley Sawyer, he comforts Jack when he cries out in pain.
- While Doey did slaughter Jack Ayers' parents in his backstory, and tries to kill the Intruder at the end of Chapter 4, this is not Matthew's fault but instead Kevin's, one of the two other children that composed Doey, he even tried to reason with Kevin that the Intruder is not to blame for the destruction of Safe Haven, as it was the Prototype's fault not theirs, but Kevin wouldn't listen. Because of this, Matthew cannot be blamed for Kevin's actions.
- Similarly, while Doey did kill Pianosaurus and joked about it, this is likely Jack Ayers' doing due to Doey's behaviour in that scene, yet again meaning Matthew is not to blame.
- When it comes to Jack's parents, Matthew sincerely told them that he himself doesn't know who they are and tried to stop Kevin from murdering them (which sadly failed).
- It's possible that the reason Doey hit the support pillar causing him to be crushed by debris before transforming was that either Matthew or Jack did so to stop Kevin from killing the Intruder.
- After being defeated, he and Jack both apologize to the Intruder, for Kevin's multiple attempts at killing and lashing out against them, in his final moments.
Trivia[]
- He is the only character in Poppy Playtime to be Pure Good.
- Jack Ayers and Kevin Barnes do not count as Pure Good, as Jack was shown to be lethal by his brutal killing of Pianosaurus, and Kevin has severe anger issues that result in him becoming a villain and trying to kill the Intruder, resulting in the tragic deaths of all three children due to the Prototype's manipulation.
