No more hiding, Dante. I gotta seize my moment!
~ Miguel to Dante

Miguel Rivera is the main protagonist of the Pixar's 19th full-length animated feature film Coco. He's a 12-year-old boy who aspires to be a musician in spite of the rest of his family's hatred for it due to their past with their great-great grandfather.

He was voiced by Anthony Gonzales in English, and by Luis Angel Gomez Jaramillo in Spanish.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • Despite his tensions with his family, Miguel does genuinely love them.
  • While arguing with his family, Miguel did gently attempt to explain why he wants to do music and even tries to play them a song to earn their approval before Abuelita confronts him personally to make him choose between family and his dream; Miguel still stand firm for music, despite his family's traditions, shocking Abuelita and the rest of the family. Believing that the guitar to be responsible for this attitude, Abuelita destroys it by smashing the ground, despite the protests of Miguel and even the rest of the family, who felt like she went a step too far this time. Abuelita tries to comfort, but Miguel completely broken, fed up with her selfishness, and heartbroken by the destruction of his homemade guitar and fed up with his family's lack of support and respect for his dreams, Miguel runs away from his family, and decides to enter the contest.
    • This isn't a corrupting factor as he just lost his temper.
    • While he does yell, "I don't want to be in this family!", he only lost his temper and he would later feel extreme remorse for it since he knows they still care for him.
  • He (reluctantly) enters de la Cruz's mausoleum and takes the guitar from its wall mountings, Miguel apologizes to Ernesto's painting and explains his reasons for taking the instrument. Before heading out, he gives the guitar a strum. However, stealing the guitar curses Miguel and he is turned into a spirit, forcing him to seek the blessing of his late family, and if he doesn't get a blessing and is still in the Land of the Dead by sunrise, he would remain trapped forever.
  • When learning of Hector knowing De la Cruz, Miguel did politely ask for his help.
  • He seemed saddened at Chicharrón's departure due to being forgotten by the living, despite having just met him.
    • Despite having only known him for a few minutes, Miguel tried to find a loophole and save Chicharrón from being forgotten by promising to remember him when he returned to the Land of the Living, only giving up after Hector clarified that he could only be remembered by someone who knew him in life.
  • Though he was nervous on having to performance onstage, Miguel still wanted to perform as he wanted to overcome his fears and prove to the man who he thought was his great-great grandfather, he was a musician.
  • He rightfully called out Imelda for banning music and for not supporting his dreams.
  • At De la Cruz's mansion, Miguel met up with the winners of the contest and congratulated them for winning, showing no resentment for having lost the competition.
  • Though he was excited when De la Cruz offered to perform with him at his Sunrise Spectacular show, Miguel politely declined and instead desired to go home.
  • He expressed noticeable discomfort after Hector was taken away by Ernesto's guards, even after he had attacked him in a fit of rage.
  • He showed suspicion of Ernesto after Hector attacked him and despite making a poor attempt to act like he didn't believe Hector's accusations of Ernesto poisoning and killing him, it was pretty clear he could see it was true and quickly felt sorry for Hector.
  • When meeting up with Hector in the sinkhole, he broke down into tears and admitted the previously incorrect actions he had committed during the film, expressing deep remorse for them.
  • After realizing Hector is his real great-great grandfather, Miguel comforted him and expressed how proud he was to be related to him.
  • After being rescued by Imelda, Miguel became sure that Hector would be remembered by the rest of his family, even if it meant sacrificing music forever, if they retrieve Héctor's photo so he can see Coco again.
    • When she initially showed hostility towards Héctor for leaving her and Coco when she was alive, Miguel explains to Imelda that Hector tried to go home to her and Coco but Ernesto murdered him, Imelda and the other Riveras agree to help when Coco starts losing her memory of Héctor.
  • When Ernesto tried to kill and keep him in the land of the dead, he called him out for killing Hector for the sake of gaining his songs to make himself famous, stating that Hector is the real musician.
  • Upon seeing Hector very close to being completely forgotten, he refused to leave the Land of the Dead even after seeing that the sun was rising and knowing he would be trapped there forever if he didn't leave before sunrise. When Hector gave him his blessing anyway, his final words to him were him insisting that he wouldn't let Coco forget him.
    • It's also worth noting that even though Imelda changed the condition of him having to give up music when going back to the Land of the Living since her opinion of it had improved by that point, when Hector is in danger of disappearing forever, he was willing to abide by it if it meant saving Hector, even though being a musician had been his dream for the entirety of the movie, and presumably, for most of his life.
  • After returning to the Land of the Living, he rushed to Mama Coco and tried to remind her of Hector, knowing that he was dangerously close to being forgotten forever. Even after the rest of his family saw what he was doing, he still sang "Remember Me" with Hector's guitar, which ultimately caused Coco to remember her father.
  • He told his family the truth about Hector and how he really did want to see Imelda and Coco again in spite of initially leaving them to perform for the world.
  • His actions initially kick-started the events of the film. However, they were justified as banning your children from doing what they like out of fear of not seeing them again is an extremely disproportionate response to paranoia.
    • And in spite of only saving one life from being forgotten, which is Hector Rivera, he still passes the low baseline for exposing Ernesto de la Cruz's plagiarism to the public and resolving the resulting family feud.

Trivia[]

  • He was originally Near Pure Good due to his corrupting qualities. However, it was decided he qualifies as Pure Good due to subverting them and learning selfless loyalty to family.
