~ Nana Shimura to All Might. |
Nana Shimura is one of the overarching protagonists in the My Hero Academia franchise. She was a Pro Hero, who was the seventh user of the One For All quirk, following En Tayutai, and the mentor of Toshinori Yagi, who would become the legendary Pro Hero All Might, as well as the eighth user of the quirk.
She was also revealed to be the mother of the late Kotaro Shimura and the grandmother of Tenko Shimura, who would become the villainous Tomura Shigaraki, thanks to the influence of All For One.
In the series, Shimura is voiced by Mie Sonozaki in Japanese and by Stephanie Young in English.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Like the rest of One For All users, Nana is shown to be a noble and courageous hero with a strong sense of justice.
- While Nana was willing to kill her grandson Tomura, this was mainly because she sees how dangerous he is to the world, and noted that he has to be stopped. And even with that, she quickly support Izuku's decision to help Tomura.
- Despite the series' high admirable standards, Nana easily passes, due to her teachings towards Toshinori, who would become the future No.1 Pro Hero All Might, making her ultimately responsible for most of his admirable deeds, such as defeating All For One twice, bringing peace to the world for a long time, and choosing Izuku as his successor, as well as redeeming Tomura Shigaraki in the final battle.
Background[]
- Despite the era she grew up in being troubled with rampant villainy (an era that costed her the lives of her family), she courageously stepped up to become a Pro Hero, dedicated to protecting society.
- She formed a deep and trusting friendship with Gran Torino, another Pro Hero known for his strength and wisdom.
- She accepted the responsibility of inheriting the One For All Quirk from her predecessor, En, which required immense courage and selflessness.
- She took on the role of mentoring and training Toshinori Yagi, recognizing his potential and nurturing his strong sense of justice.
- Recognizing Toshinori's potential to become the Symbol of Peace, she made the decision to pass on the One For All Quirk to him, entrusting him with the responsibility of protecting others.
- Because of this decision, Toshinori would become the legendary hero All Might, serving as the Symbol of Peace for many years. Not only that, but he would ultimately make Izuku his successor for the One for All Quirk, making her responsible for Izuku's heroism as well.
- She made the difficult decision to sever ties with her son, Kotaro, in order to protect him from All For One's malevolent intentions, demonstrating her willingness to sacrifice personal happiness for the greater good.
- While the way she approached leaving him could be seen as abrasive, since she provided no explanation of why she had to leave, in addition to cutting any and all contact with him - which later resulted in Kotaro resenting heroes as an adult - it was solely to keep him safe and she felt tremendous remorse for it, but she felt like there was no other choice.
- She actively participated in battles against All For One alongside Gran Torino and later All Might, standing up against one of the most powerful villains in history.
- She sacrificed herself to protect Toshinori from All For One's attack. Before dying, she express her confidence to All For One that her student will defeat the villain.
My Hero Academia[]
Heroes Rising[]
- She, alongside the other users, wanting to continue to harness One For All to Izuku, recognizing him for his heroism, temporarily transfer their power to Katsuki Bakugo to defeat Nine, ensuring Izuku does not lose the quirk.

- She quickly gave her support to Izuku in rescuing Tomura, despite all of his vile acts.
- She also tested Izuku's resolve in his goal to save Tomura, asking him if he had what it takes to defeat Tomura, even if it meant killing him. When hearing his answer, she is moved to tears and apologizes for testing him.
The Final War Arc[]
- She, alongside the other users, would aid Izuku in his fight against both All For One and Tomura Shigaraki.
- Along with the other users, she tried to advise Izuku to stop pushing himself too hard during his vigilante activities. She even expressed her concern that her emotions are getting the better of Izuku.
- Alongside the other users, she aided in battling against "Tomura".
- She supported Kudo's sacrificial plan in an attempt to stop Tomura once and for all.
- After entering Tomura's subconscious, when she witness her son's abuse towards her grandson and his rant on how Nana was a monster for abandoning him, she breaks down in tears and blames herself for causing his dark path. She would then stop Kotaro from attacking Tomura, apologizing to him for being a weak mother.
- After All For One took over Shigaraki’s body once again and tried to kill her grandson’s spirit, Nana saved him from disappearing, allowing him the chance to get revenge on All For One for the all the abuse he put on him and letting his spirit finally be at peace.
- Alongside the other users (excluding Yoichi and All Might) and her grandson Tomura, she would destroy the vestige of All For One, bringing an end to his reign of terror once and for all.
