Naruto Uzumaki is the titular main protagonist of the manga/anime series Naruto and the titular overarching protagonist of its sequel series Boruto. He is a shinobi of Konohagakure, who lived his childhood as an outcast in the village, due to being the jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails since birth.
Despite these hardships he endured, Naruto had worked his way through them and accomplished many achievements in hopes of achieving his dream of becoming Hokage. Due to his heroic deeds, he was regarded by the world as a hero and was eventually able to become the Seventh Hokage of Konohagakure, until he, along with Hinata, got sealed in the Daikokuten by Kawaki and framed his son Boruto for a crime he didn't commit.
In Japanese, he is voiced by Junko Takeuchi. In English, he is voiced by Maile Flanagan in the main series, and by Kathryn Feller in Rock Lee and his Ninja Pals.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Though he initially had corrupting factors such as arrogance, mischief, vengeance and losing control of himself, throughout the story, he eventually rids himself of all of these corrupting factors and becomes far more maturer and wiser.
Background[]
- Despite being neglected and rejected by the village as a child due to being the jinchuriki for the Nine-Tailed Fox, he still remained optimistic throughout his childhood instead of becoming bitter.
- Protected Hinata from the group of bullies, leading her to fall in love with him.
Naruto[]
- Saving Iruka from being killed by Mizuki and then defeated him with Shadow Clone Technique.
- He devised a plan with Sasuke to rescue Kakashi from Zabuza's Water Prison.
- He saved both Inari and Tsunami from Gato's two thugs, which inspired Inari into to stand up for himself.
- During the Land of Waves arc, after Haku sacrificed himself to protect Zabuza, the latter claimed that Haku was nothing but a tool. Naruto tearfully tells him how much Haku meant to Zabuza and how much he sacrificed for him, causing Zabuza to break down crying and subsequently redeeming himself by stopping Gato's men and allowing the bridge to be built.
- He refuses Hinata's offer to look at her answers during the written portion of the Chunin Exam, not wanting to get Hinata disqualified.
- Despite Kiba bullying him back at the Academy and during the Chunin Exam, he managed to defeat him which led Kiba finally learns about humility and became friends later on.
- When Hinata is fighting Neji, he cheers her on, which encourages her to continue fighting. After she's defeated, he vows to defeat Neji in the finals for her sake.
- He and Shikamaru save Lee from being killed by Gaara.
- After Hinata expresses her admiration for Naruto's inner strength and drive to never give up, he thanks her and tells her that while he first thought she was weird, he now likes her, eliciting a smile from Hinata.
- He fights Neji during the Chunin exams and makes him realize that a person can overcome destiny and become special through hard work, changing Neji and making him kinder towards Hinata.
- Warned Kakashi to stop the match between Sasuke and Gaara because he knew how dangerous Gaara is. If the match keeps up, Sasuke will get killed if the match didn't stop.
- He risks his life to protect Sakura against Gaara despite being afraid of the sand ninja. He then defeats Shukaku, saving the Leaf Village from the Tailed Beast's destruction.
- After their fight, he talks to Gaara, talking about his similar lonely past and why he fights for his friends. These words of kindness touch Gaara and allow him to redeem himself.
- Despite having a crush on Sakura, he respects her feelings of love toward Sasuke and still does whatever he can to make her happy.
- He helps Tsunade to become a better person and stops her from sacrificing two innocents to have Orochimaru bring back her lover and her younger brother by inspiring her and protecting her from Kabuto.
- He helps in bringing Tsunade back to the village, having her heal Sasuke, Kakashi and Rock Lee.
- When Sakura expresses doubts over Sasuke joining Orochimaru, he assures her that Sasuke would never leave the village, comforting Sakura. He even offers to walk her home, which she politely declines.
- After Sasuke left the village to join Orochimaru, he immediately goes after him. When Sakura begs Naruto to bring Sasuke back to the village, despite internally hurting at knowing how much more she cares for Sasuke, he smiles and promises to bring him back for her.
- He is deeply appreciative over his comrades risking their lives to save Sasuke, enraged that Sasuke would so callously ignore their determination and sacrifices.
- He apologizes to Sasuke for having been so hostile with him in their first fight, admitting he never wanted that kind of fight and that he didn't want to fight him now.
- As he fights Sasuke, he cries over having seen Sasuke's willingness to seriously harm and even kill him. He later tells him that he wants to bring him back because of the bond they have created with each other.
- At the hospital, he asks Shikamaru how the other members of the Sasuke Retrieval Team were doing, and is relieved to hear they all survived.
- He deeply apologizes to Sakura for having failed to bring Sasuke back, then tells her he will follow through on that promise no matter what.
Naruto: Shippuden[]
- When Gaara is kidnapped by the Akatsuki, he doesn't hesitate to go after and rescue him from them. As they leave for the Hidden Sand Village, Temari notices Naruto crying for Gaara and internally thanks him for his kindness.
- After Gaara has Shukaku extracted from him and is subsequently killed, he tearfully mourns his death and states how unfair it was to have put Shukaku into Gaara in the first place. His words and previous actions inspire Lady Chiyo to transfer her life into Gaara, sacrificing herself in the process, which is something that Temari notes she would have never done before and only did because Naruto managed to change her.
- During their mission to find Sasuke, Naruto manages to convince Sai, the newest member of Team 7, to understand the value of friendship and emotions and convinces him to change.
- He feels incredible guilt over having hurt Sakura while he was in his Nine-Tails form.
- When reuniting with Sasuke, he attempts to reason with and convince him to return to the village while expressing his regret over not being able to save him before. When Sasuke leaves with Orochimaru, he breaks down over his repeated failure to bring him back to the village.
- Saves Tsunade from being killed by Sora's Demon Shiruken.
- He defeats Kakuzu, avenging Asuma's death.
- After Itachi puts him in a genjutsu and talks with him, he asks him what he would do if Sasuke attacked the village, to which he replies that he'd defend the village without killing him, pleasing Itachi.
- He expresses regret over not having been more appreciative of Jiraiya and only showing the worst side of himself to his master.
- When the Hidden Leaf Village is attacked by Pain, he fights the leader of the Akatsuki and puts his life on the line to protect the village.
- Upon regaining control of himself, he cries in relief when he hears that no one was killed during his rampage.
- Despite wanting to kill Nagato for destroying the Hidden Leaf Village and killing many villagers, he ultimately decides to spare him to break the cycle of hatred and because it is what Jiraiya would have wanted.
- After talking with Nagato, he convinces him to regain hope in humanity and remind him of who he once was on his mission to create true peace in the ninja world. His words manage to change Nagato and get him to redeem himself by sacrificing his life to undo the deaths caused in his attack.
- Through his words, he gets Nagato to revive all of the Hidden Leaf villagers killed in the attack, thereby making him indirectly responsible for resurrecting all of the fallen villagers.
- Though he said he would not forgive Nagato, he eventually does forgive him despite Nagato having killed his master.
- When he discovers that Sasuke joined the Akatsuki and attacked the Hidden Cloud Village and kidnapped Killer B, the eight-tails jinchuriki, the cloud ninja interrogates him and demand to know more about Sasuke. However, he refuses to sell him out and instead offers himself to be used as a vent for their hatred, taking a brutal beating to protect Sasuke.
- As he is being bandaged after being beaten by Karui, he thanks Sai for stepping in to defend him.
- He goes to the Fourth Raikage and begs him to forgive Sasuke to protect his friend and to stop the cycle of vengeance from starting, getting on his knees and bowing his head while crying heavily.
- When Tobi meets with him, he mocks him for thinking he can change Sasuke, believing Nagato only changed because he was easily manipulated. He actually defends Nagato by saying that even though his methods were different, he still wanted peace.
- He saves Sakura from being killed by Sasuke and shows no hatred towards her for lying to him about loving him and attempting to manipulate his emotions, understanding her reasons.
- Even after having learned of Sasuke attacking the Five Kage Summit and seeing how much deeper into darkness he's fallen, he still carries the hope that he can change and still tries to talk to him. While talking with Sasuke in a mental world, he states that he helped save him from despair and was his first friend, then says that no matter what happened, he was really glad to have gotten to know him, and even admitting to him he might have gone down a similar path if he didn't have Iruka and others. When Sasuke says the only way to end this is to fight and kill one or the other, he says that he would die right alongside him.
- He talks down the other Konoha 12 to back down from their own plans to kill Sasuke, stating he would stop him, following which the Konoha 12 stopped their plans to kill Sasuke and trusted Naruto to reform him.
- He goes to the island of Genbu to learn how to control the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox, and during his training, he confronts his inner darkness which manifests as a dark clone of himself, who is still bitter over the way the village tormented him for so long, but suddenly changed their attitude after he saved the village from Pain. He embraces this dark clone, overpowering his inner darkness with love and compassion and thanking this dark Naruto for inspiring him to become better.
- He forgives the village for all the pain they put him through in his childhood.
- Upon meeting his mother, he tearfully embraces her. Then, as she expresses sadness over not having been there to raise him, he tells her not to feel guilt. He says that now he's met both of his parents and understands what they sacrificed for his sake, he now knows what it feels like to have parents who love him, and finishes by saying he's glad he ended up being Kushina's son. Kushina is driven to tears and embraces her son, in turn thanking Naruto for being her son.
- When Kisame decides to commit suicide and take all the secrets of the Akatsuki with him, he is shocked by Kisame's resolve to not sell out his comrades and actually respects him for it.
- When learning about the Fourth Great Ninja War, he doesn't hesitate to leave the island and go fight alongside his comrades to protect them and is determined to carry the burden and hatred of the world on his shoulders.
- Before going to fight in the war, he talks with Kurama, and despite his attempts to demoralize him and remind him of his failure to change Sasuke, he doesn't yield and actually tells Kurama that he'll come after his hatred one day as well.
- When he meets Nagato, he speaks in a friendly manner and expresses his disdain at having to fight Nagato.
- As Nagato is being sealed and expressing remorse over his actions, he gives him a thumbs up.
- He aids in multiple battles of the Fourth Great Ninja War against the revived shinobi and saves many lives.
- When he fights Obito and all of the undead jinchuriki with their respective tailed beasts, he meets with the four-tailed beast, Son Goku, empathizing with his pain and expressing the desire to help the tailed beasts while also commenting how he wishes he could have a good relationship with Kurama. His words inspire Son to help him, who also tells the other tailed beasts of Naruto, and thereby gaining their trust as well, and also gains Kurama's support.
- Upon hearing about how Madara and Obito intended to use Nagato as a tool, he is enraged on Nagato's behalf.
- When Kakashi is demoralized after learning Tobi was his best friend Obito and nearly allows himself to get killed, he saves Kakashi, yelling that he was going to stop both Madara and Obito and inspiring him to continue the fight.
- During the fight with Obito, Kurama finally decides to let go of his hatred, having been inspired by Naruto's determination to never give up throughout his life and his desire to help the tailed beasts. Naruto removes the seal, allowing him and Kurama to finally work together as a team.
- He leads the Allied Shinobi Forces in the fight against Obito, Madara and the Ten-Tails, giving them his chakra to protect themselves while inspiring them to continue fighting.
- He is deeply saddened by Neji's death, crying and asking why he'd give his life for him.
- When Hinata reminds him of everyone who died for his sake and helping him focus on the battle, he takes Hinata's hand and thanks her for standing by his side.
- When fighting Obito, he looks into his memories and his tragic past and actually sheds tears for Obito.
- He attempts to talk with Obito and states how similar they are, empathizing with his situation. He then offers him a hand of support, wanting him to atone for his sins and join Naruto and the others. Though Obito initially rejects this and begins to choke him, he still doesn't give up and tries to convince Obito not to abandon his previous identity and remember the person Rin cared about.
- His words, determination not to change who he is and his faith in friends all help to change Obito and make him switch sides, giving him the chance to redeem himself.
- He saves Might Guy from being burned into ashes after unleashing the Eighth Inner Gate.
- He restores Kakashi's lost eye and also stabilizes Obito's life force, saving his life.
- He thanks Obito for helping him, going so far as to bow his head towards him.
- When fighting Kaguya, Obito sacrifices himself, and his final words to Naruto are for him to continue persevering and become Hokage. When Black Zetsu mocks Obito by calling him a cockroach, he defends Obito and by calling him awesome.
- He forgives Obito, even though he is responsible for unleashing the Nine-Tailed Fox onto the village, forcing his parents to sacrifice themselves, giving Minato no choice but to make Naruto a jinchuriki, starting the Fourth Great Ninja War and getting Neji killed. He chooses to remember Obito for the person he was in his youth and the person who sacrificed himself for the sake of the shinobi world and actually admires him as that person.
- He defeats Kaguya and Black Zetsu, stopping them from turning everyone on Earth into White Zetsu.
- After Black Zetsu swore to recreate the shinobi tragedy to unseal Kaguya once again, Naruto stopped him by kicking him into the newly forming moon in Kaguya's dimension.
- When Sasuke betrays him and everyone else by capturing the tailed beasts and revealing his plan to kill all the current kage in order to start a new world, he attempts to stop him and reveals that he still wants to hold onto the promise he made to Sakura to bring Sasuke back.
- During their final fight, he continuously attempts to try and reason with Sasuke and make him remember the importance of the bonds he had with his friends and the village.
- He finally manages to get Sasuke to change, and when Sasuke tells him to give Kakashi his Rinnegan so he can die for all his sins, he refuses and says that he can still change. His words touch him and cause him to cry.
- After the war, he speaks to Iruka, remembering his words back when he first defended Naruto from Mizuki and acknowledged him as a person. Naruto thanks Iruka for being the first person to acknowledge him and turning him into the person he became, causing Iruka to burst into tears.
- When Toneri attempts to destroy the Earth, because of his belief that humanity is evil and their weaponization of chakra was wrong, and force Hinata to marry him, he goes to stop Toneri and save his true love. Near the end of their fight, when Toneri is about to self-destruct due to the influx of chakra, he decides to rescue him and saves his life even though he was prepared to destroy the Earth.
Boruto[]
- After becoming the Seventh Hokage, her serves as a wise and respectful leader to the Hidden Leaf Village, inspiring many young shinobi.
- Though he does neglect his family, it is because of his huge responsibility as a Hokage, and he still tried to be there for them by sending shadow clones in his place. However, he later spends more time with them after the battle between Momoshiki.
- Allows Orochimaru to continue his activities and research with only some surveillance even though Orochimaru attacked the Hidden Leaf Village, killed the Third Hokage, and partially led Sasuke down the road to vengeance, and maintains a cordial relationship with him.
- Allowed Mitsuki, Orochimaru's son, to be a student at the Academy and live a normal life.
- Allowed Shin Uchiha clones to live in Konoha, free from the abuse of their "father".
- Defeats Momoshiki Otsutsuki and stops his plans from creating a new God Tree, subsequently saving the Earth again.
- Attempted to sacrifice himself to stop Isshiki Otsutsuki from consuming the planet, only stopping due to Kurama's own sacrifice.
- Mourned for Kurama despite him directly orphaning him as well as being the reason the village hating him, seeing him as a good friend.
