“ | I irrigated this chamber using water drawn from deep underground by the castle windmill. I used soil drawn from there as well. I found that with clean water and soil, the plants from the toxic jungle aren't poisonous. All the poison is in the soil. Even the topsoil in our valley is polluted. But...I don't understand. Who could have polluted the entire earth? | „ |
~ Nausicaä |
Nausicaä is a warrior princess and the titular main protagonist of the anime film and manga, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
She is voiced by Sumi Shimamoto in the Japanese version and Alison Lohman in the Disney English dub.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- She is overall a very caring princess towards the people of the Valley of the Wind and a kind-hearted young girl who has a deep love and respect for everyone around her.
- She's incredibly courageous and determined to anything that she puts her mind to. She never gives up on any task that she's set to complete (especially when it involves saving or protecting someone else), even when it proves to be big enough to put her own life on the line.
- She loves animals deeply and even saved baby Ohmu as a child. She was also greatly upset when her father took it away to presumably be killed (even though it was later revealed to have been released instead). She also owns a pet fox squirrel (who she adopted after he was rescued from the insects of the Sea of the Decay by Lord Yupa) named Teto who she takes good care of and loves deeply.
- She saves Lord Yupa from an Ohmu that’s blind with rage by stunning it with flash grenades, then using her insect charm to calm it down and lead it back to the Toxic Jungle.
- When a Tolmekian airship that is being attacked by giant insects arrives in the valley, she tries to save it from crashing by urging it to turn before it hits the cliff. When this fails, she retrieves Princess Lastelle of Pejite, the only initial survivor, from the wreckage and tries to save her, and when she finds out she’s already fatally wounded, she comforts her in her final moments by telling her the cargo is burning just like she hopes it is.
- When an injured insect emerges from the wreckage, she steps between it and the soldiers of the valley who want to kill it and instead calms it down with her insect charm, then personally escorts it back to the Toxic Jungle, not only resolving the situation peacefully, but preventing it from escalating since if the insect had called for help, the valley would have been in huge trouble.
- When more Tolmekian airships raid the valley, she quickly directs her people to the castle so they’ll be safe.
- Although she becomes enraged enough upon seeing her elderly and bed-ridden father murdered to fight and kill Kurotowa’s men, she quickly calms herself and disengages the rest of the soldiers when Lord Yupa intervenes. She later cries to him over it, saying she never knew her rage could lead her to do that, and resolves to try her best to make the violence and killing stop from that point on.
- When the rest of her people find out about the murder of her father, who was their king, and react with outrage and anger, she urges them to calm down and comply with the Tolmekians since she doesn’t want to see anyone else die.
- Despite the Tolmekians invading their homeland, she feels sorry for the soldiers who get killed when a Pejite pilot named Asbel shoots down most of the ships escorting her and 5 other prisoners from the valley to their capital. She also tries imploring Asbel to stop, and when he sees her, he temporarily stops shooting shortly before his ship is shot down.
- She and Mito quickly commandeer a smaller ship and take it to go after the cargo barge so they can rescue the other men from the valley who have been taken hostage since they’re in it and it’s sinking below the clouds into the jungle, but not before she notices Princess Kushana, the Tolmekians’ leader, is still alive, and implore her to get in as well so she’ll be safe. When they catch up, she implores the hostages to drop the cargo from the ship to land safely and even reassures them by temporarily removing her mask to smile at them and give them faith it will be okay at the expense of inhaling a bit of poison, which convinces them to follow her and Mito’s instructions.
- She urges Kushana to put away her gun when she tries to use it to take command after they land, telling her it will only disturb the insects of the jungle more, and soothes a few Ohms that were already disturbed by their landing by apologizing to them and letting them scan her, after which they leave her and the others be.
- She quickly flies to the aid of Asbel, who also landed in the jungle and was causing a disturbance by using firearms in self-defense against the insects, and she saves him from being eaten by a larger flying one.
- When she finds out the Pejites are baiting insects into the valley to eradicate the Tolmekians, she tries to go back to warn everyone, and when they prevent her from doing that, she pleads for them to not burn down the Toxic Jungle since she and Asbel found out there’s an underground area that’s actually purifying the polluted topsoil and producing both clean water and soil.
- When Asbel, his mother, and many Pejite sympathizers help her escape the airship since they don’t support sacrificing her people to get rid of their enemies, she still offers to stay and help them defend themselves against the Tolmekians who are attacking them before Asbel insists that she get to the valley since his people won’t be able to forgive themselves if she doesn’t.
- Upon discovering that a couple of Pejite soldiers are baiting thousands of Ohms into the valley with a wounded baby Ohm, she prevents Mito from firing at them and risking harming the baby and instead tries to implore the soldiers to stop shooting at her. When this doesn’t work, she leaps onto their aircraft and grounds it, liberating the baby Ohm non-violently.
- She gives a tearful apology to the baby Ohm for how horribly it and its kind have been treated by other people, and saves it both by preventing it from moving too much and bleeding to death, as well as stopping it from entering the acid-filled lake to get back to its herd, even getting her foot temporarily burned in the lake while trying to keep it out, which calms it down and earns her its trust.
- She has the Pejite soldiers fly her and the baby over to the herd so she can return it to them and soothe their rage. She then has herself and the baby set down right in front of the stampeding herd, which results in her getting trampled and temporarily killed. However, this causes the Ohm to snap out of their anger, saving the valley, her people and the Tolmekians alike, after which the Ohm gather around and revive her with the healing power of their tentacles. They then allow her to walk atop their golden tentacles as if she were walking through fields of gold, fulfilling an old savior prophecy about a warrior dressed in blue and surrounded by fields of gold that will restore mankind’s connection with the Earth and end a thousand years of darkness.
- In the end credits, she is seen bidding farewell to the Tolmekians as they return to their country and helping both her people and the Pejites rebuild the valley.
