OJ Haywood is the male lead protagonist of the 2022 science fiction/horror film Nope. He is the current owner of the Haywood ranch and the older brother of Emerald "Em" Haywood.
He is portrayed by Daniel Kaluuya.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- He has a habit of risking his own life to protect or otherwise benefit anyone he can, even those he might not like or might not know:
- Despite not knowing Angel all too well in the first half of the film, he still creates a diversion allowing him to retreat to the van safely
- He repeatedly attracts Jean Jacket's attention so that Em might stay unharmed.
- He willingly acts as live bait to lure Jean Jacket onto the farm so that Em and the others can get footage of Jean Jacket.
- When Jean Jacket unfurls into its true form with the clear intent of eating Em, he grabs its attention and further aggravates it as a sacrifice
- He tries to save the TMZ representative despite the fact that he actively antagonized his sister and that he was in the midst of sabotaging the team's plan. He stays with the reporter for longer than necessary and only left him at the last moment, when Jean Jacket began to suck the reporter in.
- OJ is good-natured and deeply respects animals.
- This extends even to Jean Jacket. At no point does he ever express ill-will or violent intent towards the creature. It seems apparent that killing or otherwise harming it wasn't even on his priority list.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Jordan Peele to be pure good, as many of the characters shown in his works have at least one corrupting factor.
