I put my faith in diplomacy. Not all our problems can be solved by throwing troops at them.
~ Padmé Amidala to Chancellor Palpatine.
So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause.
~ Padmé Amidala during the Declaration of the New order, her most famous quote.
Obi-Wan… there is good in him… I know. I know there is… still…
~ Padmé Amidala's last words before her death.

Padmé Amidala is a major protagonist in the prequel era of the Star Wars franchise.

She was a respected political figure from Naboo and the secret wife of Anakin Skywalker. Dedicated to peace and democracy throughout her tenure as Queen and Galactic Senator of Naboo, Padme became a symbol of the Republic’s ideals during the Clone Wars. Tragically, she died shortly after giving birth to her twin children, heartbroken upon witnessing the rise of the Galactic Empire and her husband’s fall, but correctly believed there was still good in Anakin.

She is the tritagonist of the prequel trilogy,

She was portrayed by Natalie Portman who would later portray Jane Foster/Mighty Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What Makes Her Pure Good?[]

Background[]

  • It's mentioned in a Young Reader novel that when told about how decoys and disguise would work on her first day as queen, she wanted nothing to do with it and wanted to be solely responsible for any danger her reign could foster, only backing down when Captain Panaka rightfully insisted that choice was not even hers to make in the first place.

The Phantom Menace[]

  • She attempted to end the Trade Federation’s blockade of Naboo through negotiations with its leader, Viceroy Nute Gunray.
    • Even when Gunray jammed communications on the planet, she remained steadfast in ending the conflict peacefully, refusing to instigate war with the Trade Federation.
  • After the Senate refused to help her, she went back to Naboo to liberate her people herself or die trying despite Palpatine attempting to dissuade her from going.
  • She revealed her true identity as Queen of Naboo to the Gungans to successfully unite the two races and convince the Gungans to help her free Naboo.
  • She defeated Nute Gunray and saved her planet from the Trade Federation.

Attack of the Clones[]

  • She led the opposition to restoring the Republic Military in the Senate, and tried to end the Separatist Crisis peacefully.
  • She volunteered herself as bait to successfully allow Obi-Wan and Anakin to catch Zam Wesell and eventually lead Obi-Wan to Jango Fett.
  • She comforted Anakin Skywalker over his mother’s death and his subsequent Tusken Raider massacre while not lecturing him for his reckless actions.
  • She and Anakin attempted to rescue Obi-Wan on Geonosis.
  • She helped the newly formed Grand Army of the Republic fight against the Separatist Droid Army in the First Battle of Geonosis.

The Clone Wars[]

  • She exposed Ziro for kidnapping Jabba’s son with Dooku and secured peace between the Republic and the Hutt Clans, allowing the Republic to pass through Hutt Space during the Clone Wars.
    • In doing so, she prevented Jabba from killing Anakin and Ahsoka.
  • She attempted to sacrifice herself to kill Grievous when he captured her ship and urged the Republic not to stop their attack on the Malevolence just to save her.
  • She and Anakin destroyed the Separatist superweapon, the Malevolence.
  • She saved Rodia from the Separatists, captured Nute Gunray, and got the Republic to deliver much needed relief to Rodia.
  • She redeemed Onaconda Farr and forgave him for betraying her to Gunray and the Separatists. In fact, she apologized on the Republic’s behalf for neglecting the planet.
  • She helped arrest Dr. Nuvo Vindi and prevent him from releasing the deadly Blue Shadow Virus on the galaxy.
  • After being infected with the Blue Shadow Virus while trapped in Vindi’s lab, she was willing to sacrifice herself to save the galaxy from the virus by telling Obi-Wan and Anakin not to open the lab to try to save her.
  • She tried to stop the Republic from experimenting on and killing the Zillo Beast for war purposes and attempted to convince Chancellor Palpatine to release it.
    • Even when the Zillo Beast escaped and the Jedi agreed it had to die, Padme still sought to find a way to preserve its life and prevent the species from becoming extinct.
  • She exposed Rush Colvis as a Separatist conspirator.
  • She stopped the Republic from occupying the neutral world of Mandalore based on an altered recording of the planet’s deputy minister Jerec by revealing the true recording to the Senate.
  • She helped Satine defeat the smugglers and corrupt officials responsible for poisoning schoolchildren across the planet with contaminated tea.
  • She defeated Aurra Sing while injured and saved Ahsoka.
  • She awoke Anakin and gave him back his lightsaber so he could save the group of senators from being killed by Cad Bane.
  • She nearly ended the Clone Wars by getting the Separatist Senate to sue for peace and nearly getting the Republic to agree before her efforts were sabotaged by Sidious, Dooku, and Grievous.
  • Despite Mee Deechi being her vehement political opponent and a jerk, she was horrified by his death.
  • She exposed Lolo Purs as Onaconda’s and Deechi’s killer and defeated her.
  • As the Republic’s ambassador to Mon Cala, she tried to negotiate with the Quarren to remain in the Republic and not join the Separatists.
    • After negotiations with the Quarren failed, she helped the Republic fight the Separatists and the Quarren with her memory being evoked by Jar Jar to convince the Gungans to join the fight and save Republic forces.
  • She and Anakin exposed Rish Loo as a Separatist conspirator who nearly incited the Gungans to war against the rest of Naboo via brainwashing Boss Lyonie.
  • She convinced Roos Tarpals to stop the Separatist Droid Army while Jar Jar distracted him by impersonating Boss Lyonie.
    • After Tarpals sacrificed himself to capture Grievous, she mourned his death.
  • Although she was initially reluctant to trade Grievous for Skywalker when Dooku captured the latter, it was understandable as detaining Grievous would majorly tip the war in the Republic’s favor and honored Tarpal’s sacrifice, though she ultimately decided to agree to Dooku’s terms to save Anakin.
  • Besides Anakin and arguably Obi-Wan, she was one of the few people to believe in Ahsoka’s innocence when she was framed for the Jedi Temple bombing and defended Ahsoka at her trial.
  • Despite Clovis’ actions, she felt remorse when he sacrificed himself to ensure Anakin would save her.

Revenge of the Sith[]

  • She formed the Delegation of 2,000 with her colleagues Bail and Mon Mothma to protest Palpatine’s increasingly dictatorial powers.
    • This organization would lay the seeds for the eventual formation of the Rebel Alliance.
  • Despite Anakin informing her of the supposed “Jedi rebellion” against the Republic, she remained skeptical and let Obi-Wan into her apartment to explain the truth.
  • Sensing Obi-Wan would kill Anakin, she refused to tell Obi-Wan where Anakin was and traveled to Mustafar herself to attempt to redeem him.
  • She refused Anakin’s offer to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy themselves despite her love for him and begged him to return to the light.
  • Despite all that Anakin did, Padme retained belief that there was still good in him with her dying breath. Ultimately, she was correct as her son, Luke, convinced Anakin to return to the light, resulting the death of the Emperor and the downfall of the Galactic Empire.
