“ | You were the one who wanted me to be that way, grandmother. All so that I would listen to you. So that I wouldn't be able to think about myself. You cursed me. But I was taught... I'm allowed to ignore you. To get angry. To shout. I can choose myself and make my own wishes. So that's what I hope to do. | „ |

Philomela Sargant (フィロメラ・サーガント) is the deuteragonist of season 2 of the anime/manga series The Ancient Magus' Bride, alongside Elias Ainsworth. She is the student of the College and the granddaughter of Lizbeth Sargant. She serves under her in order to please her as well as in hoping of bringing her late parents back to life. After Chise Hatori saved her from being sacrificed by the ritual, she turned against her grandmother and regain her freedom.
She is voiced by Maki Kawase in Japanese and by Jill Harris in English.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- Despite serving under her vile grandmother, Lizbeth, she never takes enjoyment in doing the tasks she has been given, such as draining the magic out of her fellow students in the College.
- When she was forced to witness the Webster family being massacred by the werewolves, she felt so traumatized and genuinely sorrow for them that she expressed her condolences to them despite knowing nothing about them.
- During her time in the College, she warned Chise to be careful around Fabio Zaccheroni as he was a criminal hired by the College.
- She saved her cousin Rian from a plant scorpion-like creature in the waste tower as they were collecting rare ores and medical herbs.
- While she did drain the students' and staffs' magic into the Testament of Carnamagos she possessed, including Rian and her master Veronica, she only did it because she was manipulated by her grandmother with the promise that she would bring back her late parents to life by gaining enough magic, as well as because she later suffered a mental breakdown from the pressure she was under and was corrupted by the Testament of Carnamagos itself.
- When Lizbeth asked her to approach and lay down on the ritual circle, she finally began to question her grandmother that she was sure this ritual circle will bring back her parents. Because of Chise and her friends influence, Philomela is finally able to gain some courage.
- After Chise saved her from Lizbeth, Philomela immediately redeemed herself and turned against her grandmother.
- She saved Isaac from the god entity's vines.
- After discovering that she cannot be affected by the god entity's magic drain, she figured out that they need to cast a spell with the Testament of Carnamagos in order to banish the god entity from their world. Since the Testament of Carnamagos would only respond to previous readers, she and Lizbeth are the only ones able to cast the spell.
- Knowing that the god entity swallowed her grandmother and the book, she is willing to risk her life to get the book, only to be stopped by Lucy.
- When her grandmother attempted to mentally break her in her consciousness in order to prevent her from banishing the god entity, because of her friends, she is finally able to stand up against her grandmother and banished her from her consciousness with an ancient ruin that Chise and her late guardian Alycone gave her in the College.
- After regaining the Testament of Carnamagos, she cast the spell and successfully banishes the entity by summoning the outer god Shub Niggurath, causing all the students and staffs who previously had their magic stolen at the college to recover.
- On Lucy's behalf, she asked her near dying grandmother on why she ordered the werewolves to slaughter the Webster family.
- While she did not feel bad when her grandmother was beheaded by a werewolf cub, considering how much Philomela had suffered over a decade from Lizbeth's abuse, her lack of sympathy was justified.
- While she was shown to be envious towards Rian for being bold and straightforward towards his friends that she even hates him for it, that moment was during her breaking point and when she was corrupted by the Testament of Carnamagos. Once she meets Rian by Chise's place after the College incident was over, she apologized for nearly killing him.
- While Philomela is not as admirable as Chise, she has less screen time and resources as Chise was introduced at the very start of the series whereas Philomela was introduced in the College arc. Additionally, Chise is a Sleigh Beggy, comparing to Philomela, who is an average skilled magic student.
Trivia[]
- She is one of two The Ancient Magus' Bride characters to be Pure Good, with the other being Chise Hatori.
- Fittingly enough, they both had gone through similar character development as they both lost their parents when they were only toddlers and struggled to socialize with others, but eventually gaining more confident and self-esteem thanks to the supports from other people around them.
- She is one of very few Pure Good characters to also have Inconsistently Heinous status, sharing this traits with the likes of Mika Misono from Blue Archive and The Collector from The Owl House series.
