~ Po confronting Kai in the Spirit Realm |
Master Po Ping (born as Lotus Shan) is the titular main protagonist of the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
He is the Dragon Warrior and one of Master Shifu's students, Mr. Ping's adoptive son, and Li Shan's and his unnamed wife's biological son. He later becomes the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, which led to him appointing a former fox thief named Zhen as his next successor to become the Dragon Warrior.
He is voiced by Jack Black.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- While he is portrayed as clumsy and incompetent throughout the franchise, he subverted this when he learned kung fu and defeated many foes. His constant comical nature also doesn't detract much from his heroism, particularly whenever he is going up against serious foes whom he takes seriously as genuine threats and the moments he learns and give insightful wisdom, being the most effective hero (and Pure Good) other than Oogway.
- Even before becoming a Kung Fu warrior, he was already dreaming about being a kung fu hero. That's why he never gave up in his dreams at least until Tai Lung escaped prison, where he becomes scared of being killed by him which is excusable. After the first film, Po becomes completely serious with his heroism and is willing to sacrifice himself to save others from threats.
- In the first film, Po also briefly showed arrogance when he mocked Shifu. Even if he has no remorse for this act, this corrupting quality isn't enough to reject Po as pure good and instead makes him a comical dimwit.
- While Po occasionally directly and indirectly kills some of his enemies, he only does it as a last resort and after giving them the opportunity to redeem themselves, which most of them refuse.
- While he enjoyed the fame and respect after becoming the Dragon Warrior, he never let it go to his head and finds enjoyment in genuinely helping others.
Kung Fu Panda[]
- He is friendly to his friends and family, and doesn't hold any animosity towards Shifu or the other Furious Five for their initial mistreatment of him.
- He doesn't allow Shifu's blatant attempts to get rid of him and the excessively difficult training he undergoes to shake his resolve, refusing to quit.
- When fighting Tai Lung, upon seeing the Dragon Scroll was blank, Po tries to explain to him that the scroll's meaning is that the secret to kung fu is the special quality that each individual brings to it, hoping that Tai Lung would redeem.
- He defeats Tai Lung by using the Wuxi Finger Hold only after he had refused to change and couldn't understand the scroll's meaning.
- He would later feel remorse doing so once he found out that Peng is Tai Lung's nephew. Also, while he still feels guilty, he tries to explain his actions, even during his argument/fight with Peng.
- Him defeating Tai Lung helps Shifu make peace with his mistake with his fallen pupil and allows Shifu to be Pure Good as well. If it wasn't for him, Shifu would've remained bitter, harsh and unable to move forward with his life.
Kung Fu Panda 2[]
- He fought wolves who were stealing metal for Shen's cannons.
- He attempts to break Master Ox and Croc out of jail so they can help him and the Furious Five save Gongmen City despite their reluctance, only giving up after they made it clear they were not going to help them defeat Shen.
- He used an action figure of Mantis as a decoy in a cage when surrendering, allowing Mantis to entered the tower undetected and stop Shen's cannon from firing at his friends by snuffing out the fuse each time Boss Wolf lit it, just long enough for Viper to use the end of her tail to pick the lock on Tigress' handcuffs so the latter can free Po, Monkey, and Crane.
- He stops Shen from conquering all of China via finding inner peace and overcoming the pain of his past.
- He forgives Shen for all the pain he caused him and tries to make him understand that the pain from the past isn't what defines a person, but rather who they choose to be now, giving Shen the chance to redeem himself, which sadly, Shen doesn't accept.
Kung Fu Panda 3[]
- He was very happy when he reunited with his biological father and even hugged him.
- He taught all of the pandas Kung Fu so they can help him defeat Kai the Collector, but with their own unique traits rather than make them exactly like him.
- During the battle between the pandas and the jombies, he openly expresses desire not to hurt any of the Furious Five and Shifu, and instead decides to lure them into a trap to avoid harming them.
- He uses the Wuxi Finger Hold on himself in order to send Kai the Collector to the Spirit Realm, nearly sacrificing himself to save Tigress, his dads, and his fellow pandas.
- He tries to explain his identity to Kai and shows him the meaning of chi.
- He defeats Kai by overloading him with chi, saving his village, avenging all the kung fu masters, and also avenging his ancestors who fell prey to Kai.
Kung Fu Panda 4[]
- He travels through to a dock where some villagers are being attacked by a Giant Stingray. He defeats said stingray and frees three piglets from it.
- He returns to the Valley of Peace and gives fans selfies and autographs during the reopening of Mr. Ping's Noodle shop.
- He stopped Zhen from stealing various Kung Fu Masters' artifacts in the Jade Palace. (although to be fair she was most likely doing it to survive).
- He asked Zhen about The Chameleon and her whereabouts, and released the former from jail and traveled to Juniper City together.
- During the battle with Granny Boar and the bandits, he prevented Zhen from stealing money from Granny Boar's bandits.
- When he met Han and Zhen's friends, he was hesitant to fight the entire Den of Thieves.
- He tried to teach Zhen how to use Oogway's Staff and chi, and also helped a monkey that caught on fire because of the Rabbit Trio by putting him in water.
- He gave a peach tree seed to Zhen and explained Oogway's lessons to her.
- He went back to get his Staff before Chameleon hurts anyone else and takes over China, and refused to let Chameleon hurt anyone.
- He felt guilty for how his refusal to listen to Shifu in the first place and go after the Chameleon himself allowed her to take his Staff.
- He comes to accept him needing to pass on his title as the Dragon Warrior after Mr. Ping makes him understand that change is important.
- When he ran into Zhen, he refused to fight her.
- He was shocked at Zhen's redemption when she proved she cared about him and refused to let him fight Chameleon because she was worried he wouldn't survive.
- After managing to sneak into The Chameleon's palace, he was shocked to see his old nemeses again, imprisoned in cages. Po doesn't treat any of them with hostility and shows sympathy to their situation. Even when Tai Lung scolded him and called him a mistake, Po, although hurt by those words, remained determined to save Tai Lung and the other masters, promising to do so.
- He tried to reason with The Chameleon to redeem herself and change, but Chameleon refused.
- During the final battle, he saved Zhen from Chameleon, who was in a dragon form.
- When being trapped in a metal cage of scrap, he encouraged Zhen to defeat Chameleon by giving her his Staff.
- He managed to sneak out of the cage and praised Zhen for standing up to and fighting Chameleon.
- He saved all of the Kung Fu masters that Chameleon had summoned from the Spirit Realm.
- All these acts earned him Tai Lung's, Shen's, Kai's, and all of the Kung Fu Masters' respect, much to Po's joy.
- He opened the portal for Tai Lung, along with the other masters, to return to the Spirit Realm, allowing Tai Lung to take Chameleon to the Spirit Realm, where she won't be able to cause trouble in the Mortal Realm or hurt anyone else anymore. Po also happily nods farewell to Tai Lung, having forgiven his former enemy (including Shen and Kai) for his past crimes. It shows that even after their deaths, Po still desired reconciliation with his old enemies, happy to have parted with them on good terms.
- He makes Zhen his successor, as the new Dragon Warrior.
- When Shifu showed disappointment in his choice to pick Zhen as the new Dragon Warrior, he cheered her up telling her that Shifu will come around.
- During the end credits, Po gets the Furious Five to help train Zhen, in order for her to become the next Dragon Warrior.
Legends of Awesomeness[]
- In the series Legends of Awesomeness, while he does cause problems due to his selfish nature, a corrupting factor, he always fixes them, feels remorseful, and becomes a better person; outside of the series, he doesn't show this selfishness, meaning he eventually subverted it. For example, during his encounter with the demon dragon Ke-Pa, he failed to evacuate the villagers and went to fight Ke-Pa alone because he thought he could handle him and he didn't really know what he was up against. In the end, he kills Ke-Pa using the Hero’s Chi since he knows there is no other way Ke-Pa can be defeated, is impossible to be redeemed and was about to kill him and then destroy the Valley of Peace and later, the entire world.
- Another example is when he tries to convince Peng to give up the Amulet and not let the power it gives him corrupt himself into becoming like his uncle, Tai Lung.
- Another example is when he risks his life to save a young pig's doll that contained a mystical dagger. In addition, he instead saved the doll like he promised and let the dagger become lost.
- Another example is Po tried to repeatedly help the retired (and currently) short tempered General Tsin into becoming the hero he once was. In addition, Po often resorts to talking things out with him instead of fighting, but he was always interrupted or things always made Po look bad when he did try. He eventually tried to help cure the general’s madness and reform him when China was invaded by alien parasites.
- Another example is when he stops a coup against his good friend, Lu Kang, that was instigated by Pang Bing, who also planned to brainwash China because of what the previous ruler did. He also motivated some of his own enemies to do the right thing for once and try to convince Pang Bing that the people who were mean to her are not even around and the world had changed.
The Paws of Destiny[]
- In the sequel series The Paws of Destiny, he trained the new Four Constellations in Kung Fu.
- While he was reluctant to train the kids, this was due to the fact he didn't know what they were capable of, and when they did try to explain to him what happened they all talked at once (making him confused) and demanded him to train them. He also forgot how hopeless he was compared to the four kids when he started out.
- Sacrifices himself, again, to bring Jindiao to the Spirit Realm.
- Consoled Xiao on the loss of her father.
- Assisted in the defeat of the White Bone Demon.
- Encouraging one of the Four Constellations, Jing, to keep fighting after she severely injured an "innocent" bunny working in the Imperial Palace she thought was an enemy.
- Taught Bao to be a little humble to his teammates.
The Dragon Knight[]
- He tried to stop Klaus and Veruca when they were trying to steal the Gauntlet.
- He felt remorse for accidentally destroying a village.
- Helped Luthera on her mission to stop Klaus and Veruca.
- Felt sympathy for Chuntao once the latter revealed that his girlfriend broke up with him.
- While he does take Zhen with him (along with Luthera), this was only to get information from her since the latter knew about what Klaus and Veruca were doing in her village.
- He, along with Luthera, including his father and Rukhmini, went on a journey to find the four elemental weapons.
- He stopped Zuma from destroying the South Kingdom and defeated her.
- He called out his father Ping for keeping his life as a pirate a secret.
- He gave the Tiashang weapons to his father and Forouzhan to keep for safety.
- He alerted Blade when Sir Drake attempted to kill her and Lucinda.
- He and the group went to collect the Tiashang weapons from being taken apart.
- He tried to reason with Veruca on not using the Tiashang Weapons.
- He felt guilt for letting Alfie use the Tiashang Weapons.
- While he did argue with Blade, it was a heating period moment.
- He apologized to Blade, telling her that he thought he was just doing what he thought was right.
- He went to see Akna and while he was chasing her, it was only since he was trying to reason with her including being concerned.
- He went to rescue Akna and even told her that it wasn’t her fault since it was Alfie’s intention.
- He and Blade reunite the group on a plan to stop Alfie.
- He and the group tried to apologize to Weimin for abandoning him while pressuring him on where the mages are.
- He and the group excluding Blade went to rescue Klaus from the warriors.
- He stopped Veruca from taking Klaus to Alfie.
- He comforted Klaus.
- He went to rescue Blade when she was being tortured by Alfie.
