“ | I'm awfully sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you. (Aurora: Oh, no. It wasn't that. It's just that you're... a...) A stranger? (Aurora: Mm, Hmm.) But don't you remember? We've met before. (Aurora: We-we have?) Well, of course. And you said so yourself. Once upon a dream. | „ |

Prince Phillip (simply known as Phillip) is the deuteragonist of Disney's 16th full-length animated feature film Sleeping Beauty. He is Princess Aurora’s husband and the son of King Hubert, a jolly ruler and the best friend of Aurora's debonair father, King Stefan.
During the original film's climax, he was freed by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather after he and his horse Samson were imprisoned by the evil fairy Maleficent, where he proceeded to battle her in an epic battle to free Princess Aurora from Maleficent's evil spell and also save all of the kingdom residents that were put under a sleeping spell by the Good Fairies, including the three monarchs; being his father, King Hubert, and Aurora’s parents, King Stefan and Queen Leah.
He was voiced by the late Bill Shirley and modeled by the late Ed Kemmer in the original film. In current media, he was voiced by Roger Craig Smith and Josh Robert Thompson.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Unlike most of the other characters in the film who are either bog-standard or have far too many corrupting qualities to qualify, he is the only character in the film who hardly displays any of those qualities (Aurora and Queen Leah, despite being nice and kind, both contributed very little to the film’s plot and have no notable heroic actions, since Aurora was asleep until the end while Leah only appears at the beginning and end of the film, and the Three Good Fairies, while brave and selfless heroines, made two mistakes that nearly put Aurora’s life and King Stefan’s kingdom at risk, such as Merryweather and Flora’s reckless war over the color of Aurora’s gown that inadvertently led to Diablo revealing their location to Maleficent, who temporarily succeeded in tricking Aurora into pricking her finger on the spinning wheel, due to Flora's reckless decision to give Aurora some privacy alone).
- As for both King Stefan and King Hubert, despite being supportive, they both did nothing to cross the admirable baseline and are still prone to being temperamental and argumentative, especially their argument about their proposals of their children and marriage that almost resulted in a war, while Sir Minstrel and Lord Duke only serve for the monarchs and manage the castle's household.
- He is a good horse rider to Samson.
- He is very brave, forgiving, smart, and cautious, especially when he first met Aurora, under the name “Briar Rose”.
- While he did initially oppose King Hubert’s original plan to marry his lifelong betrothal, he politely made his father to respect his wish to marry the girl he met in the woods, though neither of them didn’t know that the girl he met in the woods is actually his lifelong betrothal, until later when he saves his father, Aurora, her parents, and the other residents in the kingdom from their sleeping curse, respectively.
- After being freed by the good fairies, he became determined to free Aurora from Maleficent's curse and save the whole kingdom from an indefinite slumber, since they were all placed under a sleeping spell by the Good Fairies until they can find a way to help break the spell.
- Although the good fairies armed him with the magical Shield of Virtue and Sword of Truth, he relied heavily on his skill and luck to defeat Maleficent, who had transformed herself into a monstrous, fire-breathing dragon, and overcoming her evil spells.
- When Maleficent casted a forest of thorns around Stefan’s castle, Phillip hacked his way through the forest in order to get to the kingdom as fast as he can.
- Though he killed Maleficent, the action was justified as self-defense since she was going to kill him in order to prevent him from breaking her curse on Aurora and save the kingdom.
- By kissing Aurora, he broke the curse put upon her by Maleficent. As a result, this revives Aurora from her death-like sleep.
- By a greater extent, when breaking the curse, he also freed all the citizens of the kingdom from an indefinite slumber, including Hubert, Stefan, Leah, Minstrel and Duke.
- After freeing everyone in the kingdom from their sleeping curse, he and Aurora reunited with Hubert, Stefan, and Leah.
- In Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams, he encourages Aurora to stay positive and do a good job in temporarily ruling the kingdom while he, King Stefan, King Hubert and Queen Leah go out of town for a Royal Conference.
- At the end of the first segment, he, along with Stefan, Hubert, Leah, Duke and the Fairies, attend Aurora's royal banquet.
Trivia[]
- He is the only character from the original animated film whose live action counterpart is also Pure Good.
- Alongside Prince Eric, Phillip is one of the only two Disney Princes to be Pure Good, due to him having an admirable role and contributing most of the film. Ironically, both kill the female main antagonists of their movies to defend their entire kingdoms and save their respective families.
- He, Lady and Cinderella are the only three Pure Good characters to hail from a Disney film that was released in the 1950's.
