“ | My earliest memory is arriving. I was so lucky they found me. They took me in, and raised me like one of their own, and when I was ready, they made me their princess. | „ |
~ Princess Peach telling her backstory to Mario. |
Princess Peach Toadstool is the deuteragonist of Illumination's 13th feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, based on the iconic video game franchise.
She is a human who mysteriously wandered into the Mushroom Kingdom as a child where she was taken in by the Toads and through several years of diligent training, she would become the princess of the kingdom, while serving as the potential love interest of Mario, while Bowser also seems to be infatuated with her.
She is voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- When Princess Peach was informed about Bowser's theft of the Super Star and taking the penguins hostage, she immediately goes into action, declaring that he must be stopped and plans to recruit the Kong army to help against Bowser.
- She cares for all the Toads and she views them as her family.
- While she did through Mario to the floor as soon as they met, this was out of self-defense and this moment was only played for laughs (mainly because her doing a defense move on Mario wanting to hold her hand).
- Upon meeting Mario, she allows him to go through a training regime even though he was a complete stranger to her and wasn't fully experienced yet, and she shows him the ropes of the obstacle course to let him know what he is in for. She also lets Toad come along with them for the adventure to recruit the Kong Army.
- Even though Mario doesn't end up finishing the course (just falling short on his best attempt), Peach never mocks or belittles him throughout, but rather praising him for his improvement (showing how she can see the good in Mario's efforts in exercise and training). And she still ends up taking him along anyway, because she knows what it's like to want to do whatever it takes to protect family from Bowser, which showcases her empathy. She even lets him know that nobody gets it on their first try, as she mentions that she took many attempts as well. While she admits that point was actually a lie, she did say it to make Mario feel better.
- Even though she shoved a mushroom into his mouth very aggressively, she only did that because it would help him complete the course with enhanced strength and not to be pushy with him.
- When they stopped at Fire Flower Fields for the night, Peach consoles Mario when he was missing his brother Luigi, who was imprisoned at Bowser's Castle and promises him that she will do anything to help him and shares her backstory.
- When Mario is having a duel with Donkey Kong and ends up in a losing battle, Peach lets him know of the nearby? Block that contained the Super Bell, turning him into Cat Mario and turning the tables and achieving victory.
- During the ambush on Rainbow Road, when Toad falls off the track completely, Peach deactivates the gravity feature on her bike's wheels to drop down and rescue him, and she was devastated when everything fell apart with losing Mario, DK, and the Kongs.
- She makes her way back to the Mushroom Kingdom to order the Toad civilians to evacuate to ensure that they are not in serious danger of Bowser's takeover while she makes a final stand.
- When asked by Bowser for her hand in marriage, Peach refuses to do so, but it wasn't until Kamek began to torture Toad that she accepted his marriage proposal in order to prevent Toad from suffering further harm.
- With Toad's help in smuggling an Ice Flower in her bouquet, Princess Peach objects by using the Ice Flower to freeze Bowser, and when finding out that he was about to sacrifice the captive Luigi, Penguins, Lumalee, and Kongs, she freezes the crank to keep them alive while fighting the wedding guests, long enough for Mario and Donkey Kong to arrive and get them out of harm's way.
- After being transported to Brooklyn, as Bowser viciously attacks and corners Mario, Princess Peach kicks him before he can kill him, keeping Bowser busy with Toad and Donkey Kong long enough for Mario to regain his resolve to fight although they was about to be striken to death by Bowser for defending Mario.
- Peach uses a Koopa Shell to bring the Super Star closer to Mario so that he and Luigi can use it against Bowser's army and the Koopa King himself.
- After the brothers beat him, when Bowser asks Peach for another chance, she knew she couldn't let him run loose with all the horrible atrocities he committed (which is why she declines the offer with a normally disguised response), and so she force-feeds him a mini mushroom, causing him to shrink so Toad could trap him in a jar where they keep him in her dungeon.
- Moreover, she doesn't get fooled by his cowardice because she perfectly knew that Bowser wanted to try again to kill them.
- She congratulates Luigi over his bravery in protecting Mario.
- When Mario and Luigi begin living in the Mushroom Kingdom following their victory, Peach provides a Warp Pipe for Mario and Luigi so that they can return to Brooklyn to see their family at any given time and continue their plumbing business.
- Even though she had two mean-spirited and rude moments here and there in the film (ex. telling the Toads that Mario was "not important" when they saw her and Mario walking to a pipe, and when she got a spear from a Red Koopa Paratroopa where she lights it on lava to send it at King Bob-omb even though the King didn't do anything wrong), she said what she said just to prevent any Toad from asking further questions about him, considering how she just met Mario and therefore likely won't have any info about him to answer questions about him, and she was doing what's right for the Mushroom Kingdom (as well as for the lives of others), thus making her subvert her potentially corrupting qualities.
- Plus, her snarky and cheeky moments she showed throughout the film; specifically when she responds to Mario saying how Bowser might kill him due to Mario being "very very small" before Mario wants to prove her what he's made of, her saying "No, that's a: let's see what you're made of" in response to Mario genuinely asking her if it was a yes for her allowing him to help her defeat Bowser and rescue Luigi, and the way she called off Bowser's request with getting another chance to please her by saying "No" to him in a seemingly mean manner, are all treated as her being expressive and humorous instead of being overall impudent, thus subverting any jerkish quality of hers. The first moment was just a case of her being "innocently insensitive" due to lacking social skills when it comes to socializing with humans since she was raised in the Mushroom Kingdom (especially with how Mario is the first human she's seen outside of her own mirror, and plus she was trying to warn Mario of how serious Bowser’s threat was). The second moment was more of a case of being honest with Mario about what she means by "Let's see what you're made of." The third moment was overall justified considering Bowser's horrific crimes against the Penguin Kingdom, her kingdom, and all of the innocents that Bowser tried to kill, how he tried to kill her for rejecting him and how Bowser (pathetically) begging her for a second chance, was more of a insincerely deceitful act of his during his defeat to try charming Peach to trick her, which was something that Peach easily spotted.
