I promised a special kid... I'd protect you...
~ Raine ripping off Eda's arm to save her from being disintegrated by her curse.

Raine Whispers is a supporting character in The Owl House.

They are the head witch of Bard Coven and former lover of Eda Clawthorne. Though they worked under the Emperor's Coven, they're secretly the leader of a rebel group who fights against them called Bards Against the Coven (BATs) until it later changed into Covens Against the Throne (CATs) following Darius and Eberwolf's recruitment.

They are voiced by Avi Roque as an adult and Blu de Barrio as a child, both of whom are also non-binary.

What Makes Them Pure Good?[]

Background[]

  • During the Instructing Future Witches of Tomorrow, they first met Eda and became friends together. Though they were supposed to fight each other in the "Covens vs. Wilds" challenge, they refused to attack each other and instead turned against the exam proctor Terra Snapdragon by attempting to attack her.
  • After taking notice of how Emperor's Coven forced witches to join covens against their will, they formed a rebel group called Bards Against the Coven (BATs) in order to help wild witches escape from being forced into a coven.

Season 2[]

  • They and their fellow BATs managed to save a covenless witch from being captured by two Coven Guards.
  • Though they initially refused to let Eda join BATs, it is implied they did this for her own safety. After they and Eda are reunited, they willingly allowed her to join, and her plans are proven to be quite useful later on.
  • They, Eda and their fellow BATs have saved several covenless witches from being captured and brought to the Emperor's Coven.
  • After discovering Darius and Eberwolf have set up their traps, they and Eda play their duet in order to stop the Emperor Belos' plans for the Day of Unity, even if it means sacrificing themselves if Eda's curse keeps going on. But after seeing how much Eda misses Luz and King, they changed their mind and comforted her, encouraged her not to give up so easily, and told her that they need her more than she realizes.
  • In order to let themselves being captured by Darius and Eberwolf, they let go of Eda's hands just to keep her safe and avoid getting her captured along with them as well.
  • Despite Darius and Eberwolf attacking them, they forgive them for this after finding out it was a cover-up, allowing them to be recruited into their group.
  • When Terra Snapdragon offers them tea that could brainwash them into showing loyalty to Emperor Belos, they already knew the true effects and changed it in order to not get themself brainwashed, allowing them to work undercover while pretending that they were.
  • Though they acted cold and distant to Eda after she saved them during the annual Coven Day parade, they only did this for her own safety but only fought her since she refused to leave them. They even gave her an invisibility glyph and allowed her to escape.
  • After finding out about the Draining Spell, they, Darius and Eberwolf prepared to invade Emperor Belos' mindscape to find out how to stop the Draining Spell until they were caught red-handed by Hunter. When Luz and Hunter accidentally entered Belos' mindscape, they gave Eda and King the teleportation potion to get them out of there.
  • While contacting Eda through a Crystal Ball, they promised her to get both Luz and King to safety during the Day of Unity.
  • After Luz and Eda are apparently captured and brought to CATs' hideout, they and Darius explained how them getting beaten up is all a set-up in order to avoid suspicion.
  • They came up with the idea/plan to have Eda disguised as themself and use her curse to stop the Draining Spell. They also promised Luz they would protect Eda at any costs as well. After their plans are exposed in front of the Coven Heads and the Draining Spell is activated, they managed to save Eda from being disintegrated by cutting off her right arm as part of their promise to Luz before falling unconcious.

Season 3[]

  • After their body possessed by Belos, they did their best to resist him.
  • After they managed to expel Belos from their body, they tried to stop him from reaching the Titan's heart to possess the entire Boiling Isles.
  • After they were rescued by the main trio, they, Eda and King went to help Luz ripping Belos from the Titan's heart by fighting his slimes off, allowing her to save the entire Boiling Isles from being destroyed.
  • Though they, Eda and King killed Belos by stomping him to death in his weakened state, it was justified because they'd had enough of everything he had done up to and including attempting to commit genocide against witchkind and demonkind and trying to destroy the entire Boiling Isles, and therefore, had good reason to believe that he's too dangerous and evil to be left alive.
    • Them saying "That was extremely satisfying" after killing Belos isn't considered sadism, as it's far more likely that they are satisfied that the Boiling Isles is finally rid of him after everything he has done.
  • They, along with their fellow researchers, worked together with Alador Blight to remove Coven Sigils, allowing everyone to have magic without restriction again.
  • They, along with the rest of Boiling Isles, celebrate Luz's belated quinceañera to thank her for helping them rebuilding the Boiling Isles over the previous four years.
