“ | As a duly-designated representative of the City, County and State of New York, I order you to cease any and all supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin, or to the next convenient parallel dimension. | „ |
~ Ray to Gozer |
“ | You know, I just can't believe things have gotten so bad in this city that there's no way back! I mean, sure, it's dirty, it's crowded, it's polluted, it's noisy, and there's people all around who'd just as soon step on your face as look at you. But come on! There gotta be a few sparks of sweet humanity left in this burned-out berg! We just have to figure out a way to mobilise it! | „ |

Ray Stantz is the deuteragonist of the Ghostbusters franchise. He is a scientist who catches ghost alongside his partners Peter, Egon, and Winston.
He is portrayed by Dan Aykroyd.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- In the first two films, he busted several ghosts, some of which were genuinely malevolent such as the Scoleri Brothers
- In the first film, he defeated Gozer in its Stay Puff Marshmellow man form, preventing it from destroying the world
- In the second film, he rescued Danna’s infant son Oscar and defeated Vigo, while also preventing the latter from possessing the former and taking over the world
- In afterlife, he managed to get back together again with Peter and Winston and help Egon’s granddaughter Phoebe defeat Gozer for good
- In frozen empire, he helped the new generation Ghostbusters defeat Garaka and prevent him freezing/killing all of humanity.
- In contrast to Peter who who is a cynical jerk and Egon who performed mean social experiments, he (and Winston) is easily the nicest of the original four, as well as the most optimistic and passionate. So much so that when describing the roles of each of the original 4, Winston described Ray as the heart.
- Helped Egon create most of the equipment used throughout the series (ie the proton packs and the containment unit), thus allowing them to bust all the ghosts throughout the franchise.
- Despite his seemingly multiple corrupting traits in the films, most of them were either not genuine or subverted.
- Although he (as well as Egon and Peter) initially started off pretty reckless in the first film (e.g. charging at the library ghost without a plan, nearly killing a cleaning woman with his proton pack by accident when he mistook the sound of her moving a cart in the hallway for slimer while hunting him, him destroying lots the ball room tables while catching slimer). However, most of these were during his first time ghostbusting. Following this, he (alongside Peter and Egon) became much more strategic and careful and competent.
- It should be noted that in each of these scenes, he apologized for them
- While he did summon the staypuff marshmallow man, it was completely accidental as it was out of fear and instinct and the heat of the moment, with him admitting he couldn’t help it and that it just “popped in there”. Additionally, upon seeing staypuff going on a rampage, he expresses shock and horror (“It can’t be”) before later admitting (in a saddened tone of voice) he was trying to think of something harmless, implying he didnt think Gozer was actually gonna use such a loveable and innocent as its method of destroying the world, nor show up as him in the first place.
- While it’s implied that he (alongside Peter, Egon, and Winston) originally busted ghosts more for business purposes rather than altruistic reasons, by Frozen empire, his reasoning behind ghost hunting became genuinely heroic, with him being more passionate to protect New York.
- In the first film, he has a sexual fantasy/wet dream where a ghost girl has sex with him. However, given how brief this scene is, how he never does/ tries to do anything perverted in the real world after this (nor shows any perverted behavior), and how harmless it is, his “perversion” isn’t really genuine.
- Although he did have a fight with Winston in the second film, it was under the influence of the slime which made him and Winston more hostile. Once Egon encouraged them to take it off, he went back to normal.
- Following his falling out with Egon, he temporarily became very cynical and resentful towards him, to the point he initially refused to help Phoebe, even stating he could “burn in hell”. However, when she informed him that he had died, he immediately felt remorse (showing he still cared about him despite his anger at what he did and that he didn’t truly mean it) and went to get Peter and Winston back together again to help. Upon reuniting with him the finale and reconciling with him, he eventually outgrew this mindset entirely, finally understanding that Egon was simply trying to protect his friends and family.
