My whole life, I trained to become a guardian of the Dragon Gem. But this world has changed, and its people are divided. Now, to restore peace, I must find the Last Dragon.
~ Raya

Raya is the titular main protagonist of Disney's 59th full-length animated feature film Raya and the Last Dragon.

She is the daughter of the Heartlands' Chief Benja, having been trained to be the Guardian of the Dragon Gem. After the Druun returned following the shattering and theft of the Dragon Gem, Raya set out on a quest to find the Last Dragon to help her reclaim and reunite the pieces of the Dragon Gem. She is also the former archenemy of Namaari.

She is voiced by Kelly Marie Tran.

What Makes Her Pure Good?[]

  • Despite initially being wary of her father inviting the other tribes to a feast due to growing up in a period of conflict, she still tried to follow his example and befriended Namaari up until the latter betrayed her, and her gesture of welcoming her in encouraged the rest of the tribe and the others to follow suit and initially enter the Heart tribe’s land peacefully.
  • After the Druun are released and turning everyone to stone, she focused on trying to get her injured father to safety and refused to leave his side even when he insisted she leave him behind. Ultimately, the only reason she escapes and he doesn’t is because he throws her into the water to save her and sacrifice himself despite her protests.
  • In the present, she’s embarked on a quest to find Sisu so she could ask her to make a new gem to vanquish the Druun and restore everyone who’s been turned to stone back to life, with only Tuk Tuk to help her, and it’s implied she searched for a long time by following every stream she'd come across without any luck. After finally finding her and discovering she can’t do that, they instead set out to restore the gem by finding the other pieces.
  • Though she is shown to be distrustful towards others since being betrayed by Namaari, especially since it subsequently led to the Drunn being released and attacking Kumandra, leaving it in its current state, she gradually relearned it from Sisu and the others.
  • Though she occasionally taunted Namaari when they were enemies, calling her names like "binturi" and "princess undercut" during their fights against each other, this was either merely out of passive-aggressiveness over her betrayal or to distract her long enough for her allies to escape.
  • She took pity on Noi and her ongis when she finds out they’re poor and lost their family to the Druun despite them trying to steal her Dragon Gem pieces, and as a result, officially hired them to help her get the other pieces.
  • She saved Sisu when the Talon chieftess, Dang Hu, tried to trap her outside the city walls and leave her to the Druun if she didn’t tell her where the other pieces of the Dragon Gem are.
  • When Noi and the ongis started making a mess on Boun’s boat, she helped him out by pretending to play hide-and-seek with them, which caused them to calm down and hide, much to Boun’s relief.
  • Despite Tong initially capturing her and Sisu and threatening to do something “terrible” to them, she sympathized with him when she realized he’s the only one from Spine that wasn’t petrified and was, in fact, very lonely. She then implored him to escort her companions to safety while she faced Namaari and her soldiers alone to distract them, who had just arrived.
  • When Sisu shared the story of how she managed to banish the Druun by her brothers and sisters trusting her enough to put their power into the Dragon Gem and give it to her, even though it meant being petrified themselves, she agreed to her plan to propose an alliance to Namaari instead of attempt to steal Fang’s gem piece despite what happened between them in the past. She even returned the pendant she originally gave her as a gesture of trust.
  • While she was enraged over the death of Sisu at the hands of Namaari, she later learns the error of her ways as she realized that her, and by extension, many others', rage and lack of trust in one another is what caused the entire events of the film. Because of this, she decided to give up on her vengeance and spares Namaari out of mercy.
  • She quickly proceeded to help her companions protect and evacuate the citizens of Fang by using their gem pieces to fend off the Druun and directing them to the water outside the city walls.
  • As the Druun closed in on her, her companions and Namaari, she remembered Sisu’s story about how the trust between her siblings previously saved the world, so taking it to heart, she implored the others to trust Namaari by entrusting their gem pieces to her and took the first step by handing hers over and letting the Druun turn her to stone. This convinced the others to subsequently hand theirs over, and she rewarded their faith by assembling the Dragon Gem into one again.
  • Though it initially seemed to have failed, the completed gem blasts away the Druun and brings about a magical rainstorm that restores everyone to life, including the dragons (who, in turn, revive Sisu), making her directly responsible for both humanity and the dragons being saved.
  • After reuniting with her father and her companions doing the same with their respective families, she revealed to him that the other tribes had decided to unite as Kumandra again, likely because they were inspired by her and her companions' cooperation, shortly after which they formally did so.

Trivia[]

  • She is one of two Raya and the Last Dragon heroes to be Pure Good, the other being Sisu.
  • She used to be considered Near Pure Good until she was approved as PG due to her preventions being deemed minor, as well as being subverted by the end of the movie.
