Robert E. O. Speedwagon otherwise simply known as Speedwagon, is one of two overarching protagonists (alongside Jonathan Joestar) in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.
He is a close friend of Jonathan and the Joestar Family, gaining wealth in the United States and using it to create the Speedwagon Foundation, a worldwide organization that helps the Joestar Family even after Speedwagon's death.
He was voiced by Yōji Ueda in Japanese, and by Keith Silverstein in the English dub, who also voiced Epsilon in Pluto. In the 2024 live action musical for Phantom Blood, he was portrayed by YOUNG DAIS.
What Makes him Pure Good?[]
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure[]
In General/Background[]
- Though Speedwagon was initially a thug who attacked Jonathan in their first encounter, he quickly makes up for that by helping Jonathan and his family, losing any corrupting factors he once had; furthermore, his actions and life as a thug were never mentioned, so it was off-screen villainy. Additionally, while being a thug, Speedwagon had a sense of honor and only robbed scumbags.
- He always is shown to be supportive to the Joestar family. This gets to the point that Joseph, Jonathan's grandson, genuinely views him as an uncle.
- Despite the high admirable standards, and failing them in the first part, later, he easily is one of the most admirable characters for having a posthumous effect of saving possibly thousands of lives through the Speedwagon Foundation. He also has very low resources compared to the other characters, being a normal human with no Hamon training.
Part 1: Phantom Blood[]
- When a mob of thugs was preparing to attack Jonathan, Speedwagon told them to stand down, realizing that Jonathan had held back against them and could've killed him easily, and upon hearing his reasons, Speedwagon was deeply moved and becomes a better person.
- Went along with Jonathan to help him, exposing Dio's lies and true evil nature by stating him that he was evil since birth (although Dario was also responsable of making Dio turned evil), while understandably destroying his so called excuse as he was using it to break Jonathan by talking.
- After the death of Jonathan's father, he broke into the hospital to give Jonathan emotional support, but upon seeing Jonathan with Erina, chose to leave them alone to catch up.
- Goes along with Jonathan on his quest to stop Dio in spite of the great danger.
- Pesters Zeppelli to help awaken his Hamon in order to grow stronger and help Jonathan fight Dio.
- Despite being terrified, he still chose to help fight in his second encounter with Dio by fighting off some zombies.
- When Zeppelli's arm is frozen, he places the arm on his flesh to thaw it in order for Zeppelli to regain his blood flow, which causes him great pain. Then, when Zeppelli apologizes for misjudging Speedwagon and assuming he'd run in the face of danger, Speedwagon readily accepts his apology.
- Helps Poco distract Buford, saving Jonathan and the alliance.
- Mourns the death of Zeppelli despite not having known him very long and carries his hat to honor his legacy.
- In the final battle against Dio, Speedwagon assists by fending off more zombies and rushing toward Dio himself in an attempt to hinder him by destroying his arm.
- Destroys the Stone Mask, ensuring no one else uses it for evil ever again.
- It's implied that he attends to Jonathan and Erina's wedding.
- He sees both Jonathan and Erina off to their honeymoon and wishes them well.
Post Phantom Blood/Pre events of Battle Tendency[]
- He mourns Jonathan's death.
- When he travels to America, he gets rich in the oil business and uses that money to create the Speedwagon Foundation, which would change the world through revolutionary research into medicine, archeology, and environmental preservation.
- He neither allows his wealthy lifestyle to corrupt him nor makes him greedy even though he'd spent all his life in the squalors.
- Even though it's implied that he held amorous feelings for Erina Pendleton, chose not to attempt to court her out of respect for Jonathan and Erina's love.
- He keeps on contact on Strazio.
- He prevents Straizo's adoptive daughter Elizabeth from being taken by authorites and have her name change into Lisa Lisa. He did this because he knows Lisa Lisa is innocent and the true culprit who killed George Joestar II is one of Dio zombies.
- Mourns the death of George Joestar II.
Part 2: Battle Tendency[]
- Upon discovering one of the Pillar Men, the species responsible for creating the Stone Masks, calls Straizo and attempts to eliminate the Pillar Man before it could cause any more destruction.
- He was shocked and hurt by Strazio's betrayal..
- Despite being kidnapped by the Nazis, he warns Stroheim how dangerous the Pillar Men can be.
- Being a peacemaker during Joseph and Caeser's arguement at each other.
- Like Erina and Joseph, he does not have racist views on black people. Also he has no problems to befriend with Smokey.
- Assists Joseph and his allies in his battle against the Pillar Men by teaming up with the Nazis, going directly into the front lines despite his old age to help them.
- He desperately tries to tell Joseph to not get killed by Kars.
- Attends Joseph's "funeral" when he and his allies thought that Joseph was killed by Kars until the young JoJo reveals that he's actually alive.
Post-Battle Tendency[]
- Mourns Erina's death and attends to her funeral.
- After his death, wrote in his will for the Speedwagon Foundation to continue their research into medicine, biochemical science and other fields while also demanding that the foundation continue assisting the Joestar Family.
- Through the Speedwagon Foundation, the Joestars would be helped in a number of ways, such as:
- Assisting the Joestar Group in their quest to stop DIO by providing them with different modes of transportation, reconnaissance intel, and even giving them another ally Stand user, Iggy.
- Bailing Polnareff from being framed by Devo the Cursed.
- Doctors from the Speedwagon Foundation would take care of Holy Kujo while she was sick.
- Discovering the existence of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods, allowing the Joestar Group to be prepared for them in advance.
- Doctors from the Speedwagon Foundation helped revive Joseph from death.
- Taking the Bow and Arrow for protection and study to ensure no one else used it to awaken more Stand users.
- Safely escorting Joseph Joestar to Morioh, preventing Akira Otoishi's plan to kill him.
- Helping Koichi follow Giorno Giovanna to determine if the teen had inherited his father's ruthlessness.
- Legally representing Jotaro and the Kujos, and hadn't Jolyne and her mother fell out with Jotaro, it is likely she would have never been framed by Enrico Pucci.
- Assisting Jotaro, Jolyne and her friends escape from Green Dolphin Prison (a corrupt one) from wrongful charges.
Trivia[]
- Speedwagon is considered an antithesis to Dio. Both grew up in appalling conditions and gained the life of an outcast, while hating rich people and everything they stood for, while also inevitably gaining wealth after interacting with Jonathan. Both will also impact the Joestar family and will cause far-reaching consequences after their deaths.
- But while Speedwagon becomes life-long friends with Jonathan and cared for his extended family, Dio and his schemes will kill most of them.
- Speedwagon cared for his family, while Dio murdered his father (although Dario deserved it for abusing and killing his wife, refusing to change his criminal end psychopathic behavior and the reason Dio is pure evil), he also murdered his adoptive father George Joestar I, even though he gave him a home and was a better father (although never perfect and inconsistent) than Dario, showing how ungrateful and selfish Dio was) and was clearly psychologically able to kill his adoptive brother Jonathan Joestar too.
- Speedwagon will use his wealth for the betterment of the world as well as assisting the Joestar family (as he promised to Jonathan), while Dio used his wealth for corrupt reasons.
- And finally, Speedwagon Foundation will help the Joestars and their allies long after Speedwagon's own death, saving the world numerous times, while Dio's actions impact the world long after his death, causing the rise of superpowered serial killers, criminals as well as the resetting of the universe itself.
- Ironically, Speedwagon's English voice actor, Keith Silverstein, has also voiced Pure Evils such as Masayoshi Shido, Juzo Mido, Hammerhead, Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, and Bryan Fury.
