~ Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime |
Hot Rod later known as Rodimus Prime is the main protagonist of The Transformers: The Movie and the tritagonist of the Transformers Generation One continuity. He is an Autobot Soldier that wa stationed in Autobot City who ends up becoming the succesor of Optimus Prime after his demise, leading the Autobots against Galvatron and Unicron.
He was voiced by Judd Nelson in the movie and by the late Ted Schwartz in the TV series.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- One day while fishing with Daniel, he comforted him over Spike's absence while he worked one of the Cybertronian moon bases and took him to watch the return of the Autobot shuttle to cheer him up. However, upon discovering that the ship had been taken over by Decepticons, he opened fire on them and managed to expose the ruse before Megatron landed on the city, even though he nearly got blasted to pieces by Blitzwing on the process.
- Hot Rod's actions gave the Autobots enough time to set their defenses and prepare for the attack, which left Hot Rod, Daniel and Kup stuck outside until they found the Insecticons breaching the defenses and promptly took them out, going back inside the city with the whole the cons made.
- He later participated in the long battle until the tide changed when Optimus arrived. Once Megatron was at the Prime's mercy, Hot Rod spotted him trying to reach for a weapon while he pretended to surrender, and tackled Megatron in an attempt to prevent him from shooting the Autobot Leader down. After Megatron fatally wounded Optimus, Hot Rod ran to his side and begged for forgiveness over his failure in battle.
- As Optimus passed and accidentally dropped the Matrix of Leadership, Hot Rod jumped and catched it before handing it to Ultra Magnus as per Optimus' request.
- As the Autobots found out about the coming of Unicron just as Galvatron led a new attack on Autobot City, Hot Rod was among those who fought and later fled to space in twin shuttles. However, Hot Rod's shuttle was shot down leaving him stranded on Quintessa with Kup and the Dinobots, where he escaped the sea by hackling the mechanical vines and fish with his buzzsaw and saving Kup from a giant squid-like monster.
- He then repaired Kup and the two set out to look for the Dinobots, coming across Allicons that captured them and brought them to the Quintessons.
- Being informed of Unicron's plans, Hot Rod tried to stage an escape before the duo were tossed to the Sharkticons and was afterwards saved by the Dinobots and Wheelie, escaping in a new ship. He then arrived just in time to stop Wreck-Gar and the Junkions from destroying all the refugees from Autobot City, using the Universal Greeting to calm him down and recruit him to their side before they all left together to Cybertron to take on Unicron.
- Hot Rod then crashed the ship right through Unicron's eye, being separated from his allies and finding himself in a duel to the death with Galvatron. He then fought Galvatron to reclaim the Matrix in spite of being very much overpowered and was defeated and nearly killed before he managed to snatch the Matrix from Galvatron's neck and subsequently filled by it's energy.
- The Matrix then revealed Hot Rod to be the Chosen One from the old legends and transformed him into Rodimus Prime. With his newfound power boost, Rodimus took on Galvatron once again and defeated him, hurling him through Unicron and into the void of space.
- He then opened the Matrix while still inside Unicron's head, destroying him from within by beheading the Death God. Rodimus then found the other Autobots and led them in the escape from the imploding Unicron, arriving to the newly reclaimed Cybertron and declaring the begining of a new Golden Age for the Autobots.
- The Admirable Standard of G1 is not as considerably high as in most later Transformers continuities, and as such Hot Rod stands out for single handedly defeating both Unicron and Galvatron after embracing the Matrix and his role as Prime, being guided by Optimus spirit to defeat the Death God and lead the Autobots to victory, saving the entirety of Cybertron from being consumed by Unicron and finally putting an end to the devourer of worlds, whose head was left to drift through space.
- While some of Kup's comments hint that Hot Rod was a troublemaker, not only is this completely offscreen but he's long since reformed from this during his time as Prime and Leader of the Autobots, being shown to be much more mature emotionally and take his duties very seriously in order to live up to Optimus. Even after Optimus comes back, any type of possible mischief or "jerkish" moment is clearly lighthearted with his fellow Autobots and not meant to be taken seriously.
- While he did kill Unicron, it's not corrupting in the least given who he was and thar he was planning on killing all Autobots and remaining Decepticons by consuming Cybertron to satiate his hunger and using Megatron as a pawn by converting him into Galvatron and making him his herald. Unicron's death is completely justified as he left the Autobots no other choice but to put an end to him in order to stop him from destroying Earth and several more planets afterwards.
