Rodney Copperbottom is the main protagonist of Blue Sky's 2nd full length animated feature film Robots. He is an enthusiastic robot who was inspired by his hero, Bigweld, to make a difference in the world through his inventions.
He was voiced by Ewan McGregor, who also voiced the title character in Valiant.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- Coming from a world of sapient robots, he has a clear moral agency, doing good out will.
- Even though he grew up in poverty and was told all his life he'd never be anybody special, Rodney still retained an optimistic and hopeful demeanor.
- He wanted to become an inventor in order to be somebody and make a difference in the world by helping others like his idol, Bigweld.
- He invented Wonderbot in order to help his father in his work as a dishwasher.
- When going to Robot City, he helps Fender by fixing his neck even though he'd attempted to steal his foot before, calling him his friend even though they had only met each other that day, and despite Fender saying he was more deserving of being called an embarrassment, a way to rebel against your parents, and a desperate cry for help.
- When learning that Bigweld disappeared, he is determined to find him instead of sitting idly by and doing nothing.
- He stops the outmodes from stealing the parts of a robot who fell apart.
- For about a month, Rodney spends his time fixing outmodes, saving them from being taken to the Chop Shop and giving them all hope.
- He infiltrates the Bigweld Ball in order to try and find Bigweld, and when he learns that Bigweld isn't there, he demands to know why, exposing himself and nearly getting arrested and killed in order to do so.
- When he meets Bigweld again, he attempts to convince him to help him stop Ratchet and end the crisis going on.
- He apologizes to his father because he believes he let him down by not succeeding in fulfilling his dreams in Robot City.
- After learning about Ratchet's plans, Rodney refuses to back down and attempts to make a stand against him, even after Bigweld refused to help him.
- He managed to inspire Bigweld and help him regain hope simply by saying he wanted to grow up to be like him.
- Even when Bigweld is captured and taken to the Chop Shop, Rodney refuses to give up and leads the charge against Madame Gasket and Ratchet.
- Through his help and passion, he manages to inspire all of the outmodes to fight back against Madame Gasket and Ratchet's army.
- He saves Bigweld from being melted down and stops all of the Sweepers from destroying the outmodes.
- When Bigweld tells Rodney for them to go to Bigweld Industries to open the gates, Rodney tells him they need to help fix his father first, saving his father's life by giving him replacement parts.
- He thanks his father for believing in him and his dreams.
- He helps his father with his dream of becoming a musician like he wanted.
- Unlike his archenemy Phineas, Rodney loves Cappy for who she is.
Trivia[]
- Rodney is one of the two characters from Robots to be Pure Good, the other being Bigweld. Coincidentally, their counterparts, Phineas T. Ratchet and Madame Gasket respectively, are Near Pure Evil.
