The Rookie or the Avatar, is the deuteragonist of the 2017 platform video game Sonic Forces.

They are the custom character who the player can create during the early game. Being a survivor of one of Infinite's massacres, the Rookie would proceed to join the Resistance in order to help reclaim the world from the clutches of Dr. Eggman. Starting out as a coward who can barely fend for themselves, the Rookie would ultimately come into their own, becoming a selfless and brave hero thanks to the influence of Sonic, and ultimately be the one, along with Sonic himself, to defeat Infinite.

Their male version is voiced by Yū Seki while their female version is voiced by Aoi Yūki.

What Makes Them Pure Good?[]

  • They joined the Resistance after managing to survive one of Infinite's massacres, and from there would be a key player in reclaiming the world from Eggman and ultimately winning the war.
  • Using a Space Shuttle, they would fly up to the Death Egg and proceed to rescue Sonic, who had been trapped inside and, if Knuckles' words are to be believed, was tortured for months.
  • They, along with Sonic, destroyed Eggman's Weapon Factory located in the Green Hill Zone, preventing Eggman from being able to mass produce said items.
  • Distracted Eggman while the other members of the Resistance destroyed the Death Egg, which would ultimately lead to the first power supply for the Phantom Ruby to be destroyed.
  • When Sonic was being sucked into Null Space, they attempted to save him, which wound up causing the both of them to be trapped in Null Space.
  • Ultimately broke both themselves and Sonic out of Null Space via them performing a Double Boost, which allowed them to escape.
  • When Infinite summoned an artificial sun in order to burn the Resistance alive, the Rookie proceeded to use the Phantom Ruby Prototype they had previously gained and used it to make the apparition vanish, saving the entire Resistance and effectively the entire world in the process.
  • They, along with Sonic, ultimately put an end to Infinite, weakening him to a point where he was no longer a threat, effectively destroying Eggman's greatest weapon.
  • Destroyed the Fortress Reactor a long with Sonic of the belief that it would destroy the last power supply that the Phantom Ruby had.
  • Would ultimately defeat Eggman along with Modern and Classic Sonic, destroying the Death Egg Robot that was powered by the Phantom Ruby, which wound up destroying the clone army and thus definitively allowing Team Sonic to win the war and reclaim the world as their own.
  • Despite the high admirable standards of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, the Rookie manages to stand out thanks to their lower resources compared to Sonic as well as being able to pull off many admirable feats despite their screentime, such as disabling the artificial sun that Infinite summoned that would've burned the Resistance alive in one of the most brutal attempts of mass slaughter in the entire series.
  • Despite being relatively flat in character and not having any proper dialogue, the Rookie still shows many personality traits that prevent them from being insufficiently characterized, with them even having a mini character arc of overcoming their fears of Infinite and facing him head on thanks to Sonic’s positive influence on them.
