ROZZUM unit 7134, shortened for ROZ, is the titular main protagonist of DreamWorks‘ 47th full-length animated feature film The Wild Robot, which is based on Peter Brown‘s book series of the same name.
She is a robot that was accidentally abandoned in the wilderness and explores the wild nature with its animal inhabitants. She is the adoptive mother of Brightbill, after she accidentally killed his family and became his mother and caretaker as part of her assignment. She also starts to become more sentimental as she raises her adoptive son and learns more about how to survive in the harsh environment of the wilderness.
She is voiced by Lupita Nyong'o.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- Upon arriving at the island, Roz's first instinct was to study the animals and befriending them, and kept trying even after the animals were hostile to her.
- Even though Fink the fox tried to eat the egg that would've become Brightbill, Roz still saved him from certain death by plucking porcupine quills out of him. This move convinced Fink to help her and led him to develop his character.
- She cares about Brightbill from hatching to adulthood, teaching him everything she thought he would need to know.
- While she caused the deaths of Brightbill's family, this was an accident and she would later feel heavy remorse for causing it, shown by her hatching the remaining egg unprompted.
- When the island's season became winter, she risked her life to save as many animals on the island as she could, despite most of them being initially hostile towards her.
- She refused Vontra's orders, proving she has a clear moral agency and is not limited to her original programming.
- After realizing that Universal Dynamics will just send more hostile robots to bring her back, no matter how much she will resist, Roz chose the animals' well-being over her own and surrendered willingly to ensure the animals' safety.
