Sae Niijima is a major character in the Persona 5 sub-series within the Persona series.
She was previously a major antagonist of the first semester (even becoming the main antagonist of the sixth heist), before becoming a major ally for the rest of the game.
She is the older sister of Makoto Niijima as well as her legal guardian. She worked as a public prosecutor of the Tokyo District Special Investigation Department before becoming a defense attorney. She was previously an enemy of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, but she then later turned over to a new leaf and became one of their important allies.
She was voiced by Yūko Kaida in the Japanese version, and by Elizabeth Maxwell in the English dub. She was also portrayed by Kaoru Marimura in the stage play adaptation.
What Makes Her Pure Good?[]
- She took up the job of public prosecutor to help put the guilty away.
- She took up the guardianship of Makoto after her father was killed by an unknown assailant.
- Despite lashing out against her sister, it was only due to the stress of working in the SIU and opposing the Phantom Thieves while believing them to be criminals as well as trying to provide for her, and she regretted it.
- Had standards against the police beating up and drugging Joker. Her even resorting to illegal measures to win a case is only due to her trauma, and she subverts that trait after being redeemed.
- The cognitive beings in her Palace, unlike most in previous Palaces, are indistinguishable from actual people, showing that she never thought of defendants in a dehumanizing manner even at her most warped.
- Despite her personality being warped enough to form a full-fledged Palace, her Shadow is ultimately convinced to change for the better without stealing her Treasure.
- After learning Shido and Akechi's true intentions, Sae redeemed herself and decided to stop the duo from taking over Japan.
- She saved Joker from Akechi as the latter tried to kill him.
- She saved an unknown guard by warning him about Akechi.
- Helped provide intel about Masayoshi Shido and his goals.
- After Shido's heart was changed by the Phantom Thieves, she led the prosecution against him and cleared Joker's name from Shido's attempt.
- She decided to become a defense attorney so that she could clear the names of more innocent people.
- She saved Zenkichi Hasegawa after he was caught by the police, allowing him and Futaba to save the Phantom Thieves after they were imprisoned in Akane's jail.
- Despite lacking the Phantom Thieves' heroics, she stands out due to having lower resources than them due to not having a Persona.
Trivia[]
- The Niijima sisters (she and Makoto) are the only Pure Goods from their debut game.
- They are two out of four Pure Goods from the Persona 5 series, the others are Sophia and Zenkichi Hasegawa, who debut in Persona 5 Strikers.
