| “ | I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you! | „ |
| ~ Sam to Frodo on Mount Doom; his most famous quote. |
Samwise Gamgee, often simply called Sam, is the tritagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy epic novel trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, as well as in Peter Jackson's film trilogy.
Sam is a Hobbit, a halfling race who mostly live quite rural lives. Sam was a gardener for most of his life but one day leaves his home in the Shire when his friend and neighbor Frodo Baggins finds that he is charged with taking on a cursed ring referred to as the One Ring and most make the arduous journey across the land to see to its destruction.
He was portrayed by Sean Astin in the films, who also played Bob Newby.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- He selflessly aids Frodo on his journey to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring once and for all, including:
- Going back to save him from Shelob, even after being told to go home.
- Rescuing him in a tower full of Orcs.
- Giving him the rest of his own water.
- Offered to share the burden of the ring with Frodo when it became too unbearable.
- Carrying him the rest of the way on his back when he became too exhausted to walk anymore.
- Even when he did request the ring it was never for himself, his only desire was to lighten Frodo's burden.
- Defy the belief where Frodo being destined to be the only one who can carry One Ring to Mount Doom and ultimately destroy it, knowing better his said best friend will bite more than he can chew (which he ultimately did had it not for his, Gollum, and Eru Ilúvatar's interference), something which earned him Gandalf's respect as the Fellowship of the Ring turned out meant to save Middle-Earth as splintered group as cemented by unfortunate turn of events starting from the Grey Wizard's sacrifice to defeat Durin's bane and subsequent revival and promotion as the true White Wizard.
- When tempted by the Ring with visions of a large garden for himself, Sam refused to succumb to these temptations and returned the Ring to Frodo upon discovering him alive.
- He's also the only carrier of the Ring to have given up the Ring readily, as even Bilbo needed convincing from Gandalf and gave up the Ring with difficulty, though admittedly Sam carried the ring for far less time than others.
- In the film adaptation of The Two Towers, he snaps Faramir who fell under One Ring's influence back to his senses by warning that he will dangerously suffer the same fate as Boromir did.
- Taking the Ring upon believing Frodo was dead to make sure that it doesn't fall into the enemy's hands.
- While a bit jerkish towards Gollum (even threatening to kill him if anything happens to Frodo), this is not unjustified as Sam correctly suspected him of trying to kill both him and Frodo in order to gain the Ring for himself. He beats him up at one point, but that's only after Gollum threw away the last of their food supplies, and he even said he was sorry afterward.
- There are also several scenes in the extended cut of The Two Towers where Sam begins to warm up to Gollum, only turning on him again after overhearing Gollum's plan to murder them during Return of the King.
- When given a chance to kill Gollum on Mount Doom, Sam chooses to spare his life since he carried the ring and understood its maddening influence. This would ultimately prove to be a decision that helped save Middle-Earth, since it was only through sparing Gollum that he'd return to take the Ring from Frodo, who'd fallen to its influence and chose to keep it, and ultimately fall to his death along with the Ring after struggling over it as a result.
- Despite the high admirable standards in the The Lord of the Rings series, Sam stands out for possessing low resources (due to being an ordinary hobbit) but yet, still continued to aid and protect Frodo in his journey to Mordor, even carrying him to Mount Doom.
