Senior Detective Sebastian Castellanos is the main protagonist of The Evil Within franchise. He is a former detective of Krimson City Police Department along with his partners Juli Kidman and Joseph Oda.
Sebastian is one of Krimson City Police Department's distinguished detectives. Prior to being sidetracked by two catastrophes, his career was on the fast track. Depressed and helpless, Sebastian turned to drinking away his problems. As he continued to descend into despair, his enthusiasm for his work gradually diminished along with his sense of perspective and serenity.
Joseph Oda, his longtime friend, reported Sebastian to Internal Affairs in an effort to help him get back on track and protect him from himself. Sebastian's career was saved, but in the end, Joseph and Sebastian's relationship suffered greatly, albeit they eventually grew close.
Since that time Sebastian has returned to the job, but is never without his hip flask. He still feels responsible for the tragedies that befell him and shrugs off any offers of help. He returns to find his daughter within STEM, and to stop the serial killer Stefano Valentini and cult leader Father Theodore Wallace with the eventual help of his wife Myra Castellanos.
He is voiced in the first game by Anson Mount through motion capture and by Marqus Bobesich in the second game.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- While he initially showed bouts of rage and self-loathing, which is prominent in the second game, all of them were just heating-up periods as it was a front for his trauma of losing Lily. In reality, he is a friendly, kind person who goes out of his way to protect and help anyone in need. Not to mention, he already mellowed out during the second game and eventually subverted all of them after rescuing Lily. His bouts of anger are justified especially with people like Ruvik, The Adminstrator, Stefano Valentini, and Theodore Wallace who are irredeemable monsters who constantly terrorise innocent people for their agenda.
- While Sebastian does kill others, it is because all of them are righteous killing and are in self-defence and most of the enemies he kills are monsters like The Haunted, The Lost, as well as dangerous villains including Ruvik and Stefano.
- Even in some levels in the first game where Sebastian ends up at the room with STEM machine on it, he is required to knock the Haunted out through non-lethal means than killing them in order to remove the cord to defeat them.
The Evil Within[]
- Killed Oscar Connelly, who became a Haunted, out of self-defence.
- Attempted to rescue Leslie Withers within the Village, who ran away, despite The Haunted's presence being everywhere, showing that he is willing to give his life no matter what.
- Assisted Dr. Marcelo Jimenez within the village, while killing the Sadist from Chapter 1, thus allowing him and Dr. Jimenez to escape on the other side of the village to continue pursuing Leslie.
- Stopped Joseph's transformation into The Haunted after reuniting with him.
- Saved Kidman from drowning inside the water tank with Joseph's help.
- Saved Joseph from being beheaded by the Haunted. At the same time, he also stopped Joseph from killing himself after being turned into a Haunted for the second time.
- Killed both Neun and Zehn at the church's cemetery.
- Stopped the Amalgam Alpha, thus saving Leslie as well as avenging the death of Dr. Jimenez, who was killed by the abomination, despite him being later revealed to be complicit behind Ruvik's vengeance towards MOBIUS and with the doctor himself being a member of MOBIUS.
- Stopped the army of Haunted attacking the bus that had Kidman and the injured Joseph on it.
- Despite Kidman revealing that she was working under the orders of someone (aka MOBIUS and The Administrator) to stop Ruvik from having Leslie, before revealing that she was going against them, Sebastian stayed calm and did not resort to killing her even though she attempted to kill Leslie (which missed but hit Joseph).
- Stopped the Amalgam form of Ruvik, thus ultimately killing the monster for good and avenging the many people he tortured inside STEM and turned into Haunted. It is bittersweet, however, as Ruvik still managed to possess Leslie and escaped.
The Evil Within: The Interlude[]
- Joined forces with Tobias in hunting down Samuel Dista, the Nursery Rhyme Killer and a rogue MOBIUS agent, in an attempt to stop his serial killings of several MOBIUS agents across Krimson City.
- Despite the Lily he eventually encounters was nothing more than a dummy with a tape recorder on it at the burning home, Sebastian would still go out of his lengths to save her. Eventually, he would later attempt to stop Dista, before the masked person (revealed to be Kidman) would put the serial killer out of his misery for good.
The Evil Within 2[]
- Despite his trauma from his experiences in visiting STEM in the first game, Sebastian, with Kidman's help, reluctantly decides to go back to STEM, in the new artificial town known as Union, to find Lily and rescue her.
- Pursued Stefano Valentini, the murderous serial killer, who was chasing after Lily, before stopping the creatures along the way after he was sent out.
- Stopped Stefano's monstrosities including both The Guardian and Obscura.
- Assisted Julian Sykes, a MOBIUS technician, and rebooted the server for him in order for Sykes himself to find an exit.
- Killed Stefano inside his own art gallery, thus ending his terror for good.
- Despite encountering the hooded creature, revealing to be Myra who was corrupted under STEM's influence, he never raised his gun as he attempted to save Lily.
- Refused Theodore Wallace's "offer" of retrieving Lily from Myra after the former revealed his true intentions of using his daughter to control Union and the whole world for himself through STEM.
- Killed O'Neal, who was brainwashed as a Harbinger by Theodore, before O'Neal confessed to Sebastian that he was tricked by the cult leader.
- Encountered Theodore yet again, where this time Sebastian attempted to shoot him, before realising that it was just another of Theodore's illusions and the person he shot was none other than Esmeralda Torres. Despite that, however, Sebastian took no pleasure of it as he was utterly horrified of what he had done, promising to avenge not just O'Neal but her by putting a stop to Theodore for good.
- Despite Hoffman revealing that Torres is behind Lily's kidnapping and the one behind the house fire to make it look like an accident, Sebastian didn't show any signs of hate on her, after Torres made amends by joining with Myra to save Lily.
- Assisted Sykes for the last time by allowing him to exit STEM, despite the low success rate of 25%. At the same time, he also refused to risk Lily getting out of STEM, promising to find another way out, showing his care towards his daughter.
- Encountered Theodore at his throne room before refusing his final offer of joining him, thus forcing Sebastian to confront his past and resisting the cult leader's efforts of using his trauma of Lily, engineered by Theodore himself, by stopping The Sadist, The Keeper, and Laura for good. He also avenged the death of Yukiko Hoffman, who was killed by Theodore's Disciples.
- Faced off against Myra, who attempts to convince her that they can reunite again as a family. He then stopped Myra's creation, the Matriarch, within the ruins of Union. Despite that, however, Sebastian and Myra finally made amends, with the latter confessing that she was unable to control herself.
- Saved Lily by rescuing her at the recreation of his family home, thus allowing Myra to complete The Plan at the cost of her life. His efforts ultimately saved his daughter for good.
