“ | Po, wait. What goes on in your head, I really don't always understand. But what goes on in your heart will never let us down. | „ |
~ Shifu to Po in Kung Fu Panda Holiday. |
Master Shifu is the deuteragonist of Kung Fu Panda franchise.
He was once the student of Master Oogway before the latter passed away, becoming the new Master of the Jade Palace and training the Furious Five as well as Po into becoming the skilled warriors they are.
He is voiced by Dustin Hoffman in movies and by Fred Tatasciore in TV series.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- As the Master of the Jade Palace as well as the one who trained the Furious Five and Po, he is partially responsible for who they became as well as their admirable deeds.
- When Tai Lung first went on his rampage against the valley and came to confront him and Oogway, he couldn't bring himself to properly fight him due to having raised him as his son his whole life.
- When Tai Lung returned after escaping from prison, he took it upon himself to fight him in order to protect the Valley's residents.
- He apologized to Tai Lung for pushing him so hard when training him and making him believe he was the Dragon Warrior only to do nothing when Oogway said otherwise, as well as admitting to having always been proud of him.
- He taught Po how to achieve inner peace as well as taught him about Chi, teaching him how to achieve both and thus playing a part in his development as well as the defeat of Lord Shen and Kai the Collector.
- He convinced Master Croc and Master Ox to help stand up against Lord Shen's tyranny against China and support the Furious Five in the battle against him.
- While he did make Po the new teacher knowing he'd be bad at it and thus causing the Furious Five to get hurt, he was only doing this to make Po break out of his comfort zone and likely didn't know the full extent of the damage he would cause, this is without mentioning that he needed to do this in order to make Po a better teacher since he himself was retiring.
- He sent out Crane and Mantis to scout for Kai so they can watch what their doing, most likely because he trusts Crane's abilities rather than the fact he could fly. Though he does sent Mantis with him, it was justified since he was mocking Crane's situation. He was also aware of the danger, explicitly telling them not to confront Kai in combat when they found him (instructions Crane tried to heed unlike Mantis).
- When Kai the Collector invaded the valley, he along with Tigress, Monkey and Viper fought against him to protect the Jade Palace and preserve Oogway's legacy, personally ashamed when Kai destroyed the palace with Oogway’s statue.
- He told Tigress to leave him and warn the Panda Village about Kai's arrival right before he himself was turned into a Jade Warrior.
- While he did seem jealous when Po was selected as Oogway's successor, Shifu was still able to respect his decision and never really expressed it towards Po at all, showing that he is honorable; he also refused to take Po’s place as Oogway’s successor when the panda tried to pass the title to him, truly showing respect to his late master’s choice and being adamant that Po do so as well.
- He assured Po that he wasn't trying to take anything from him as it was time for him to choose his successor for who to be the next Dragon Warrior as Po was about to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.
- When Po was struggling to decide on who to choose to be his successor, Shifu had him meditate on it near the Peach Tree of Heavenly Wisdom.
- He tried to convince Po not to go out and fight the Chameleon and instead leave the matter to the Furious Five, although Po refused to listen to him (Shifu’s cautioning would be valid as Po, who later realizes this himself, going after the Chameleon was orchestrated by her so she could steal the Staff of Wisdom).
- Although he wasn't too impressed when Po choose Zhen as his successor to be Dragon Warrior and even expressed disappointment towards it, he choose to meditate on it instead of fighting about it.
- Plus, during the training montage with Zhen, he smiled during her session indicating further that he respects and now accepts Po's choice.
- Furthermore, Shifu doesn't even go to sadistic extremes to torment Zhen to convince her to quit training to be the next Dragon Warrior like he did with Po in the first film.
- While he started off as a cold and stoic individual who was often overly harsh on the Furious Five, even initially going to almost sadistic extremes to torment Po and convince him to quit training to be the Dragon Warrior after Oogway picked him due to not believing he could possibly become what Oogway believed he could, he gradually began to soften up when Oogway convinced him to have faith and discovered that Po actually had an aptitude for martial arts in his own unique way. From there on, he quickly became a much happier individual and even eventually found inner peace.
- By the time of the sequels, he treated Po and the Furious Five much more courteously, openly praised them for their accomplishments, was very protective towards them, and overall, seemed to have completely shed his previous corrupting factors from when he was more cynical and hardened, demonstrating that they were mainly a result of being deeply troubled and guilt-ridden by his initial failure with Tai Lung.
Trivia[]
- He was originally Near Pure Good due to wanting to get rid of Po and being jerkish and arrogant, However, he subverted all of this as he was no longer a jerk nor arrogant in the third film by then.
