Shoko Makinohara is one of the main characters of the Seishun Buta Yarou light novel and anime series, and the tritagonist in the movie Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl. She's a girl who appears in two forms, one as a pre-teen middle schooler (the present form) who dies in place of Sakuta and Mai, and an older one coming from the future, who is around 18, who survives into the current timeline. Shoko (in her future/revised version) is also Sakuta's first love interest, and she's often shown helping him throughout the series.

She is voiced by Inori Minase, who also voices Furina de Fontaine in Genshin Impact, and in the English dub, she is voiced by Risa Mei.

What Makes Her Pure Good?[]

  • She's very kind, supportive, selfless, idealistic and compassionate, and is constantly shown helping Sakuta in his moments of loneliness. Her daily goal is to be a little bit kinder each day, which she teaches Sakuta as well.
  • Like Sakuta and Mai, she's at her most admirable in the movie; the younger variant reveals to Sakuta the truth about her two forms existing and about Sakuta's scars, telling him that he's going to die and become her heart donor - though, with Mai planning to sacrifice herself, and becoming the one saving Sakuta (dying instead of him in the accident) and saving Shoko (having signed the documents to donate her heart to the ill young Shoko), this is averted by Sakuta and Mai going to the new timeline where Shouko survives.
  • As Mai sacrificed herself and Sakuta is desperate, Shoko, in her older form, gives Sakuta the possibility to travel back in time to go save Mai, and before disappearing says goodbye to Sakuta – meaning present Shoko will sacrifice her life to let Sakuta and Mai keep living, succumbing to the illness. Future Shoko has also given the possibility to create a new timeline where she is healthy, but at the same time she and the others wouldn't know about each other. Sakuta and Mai avert Shoko's death by settling in the new timeline, to allow Shoko to survive, as seen in the epilogue where, against all odds, they all recognize each other and she's finally a healthy and cheerful kid. It also helps when Shoko's adult form is confirmed to simply be an extension of herself through her adult form's memories merging with her new body.
