Peter Benjamin Parker, better known as Spider-Man, is one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside Miles Morales) of Insomniac‘s action-adventure superhero video game series of the same name and a titular minor character in Sony Pictures Animation‘s 24th full-length feature film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
He is a superhuman adult who takes his part-time job as a superhero to fight against crimes, and has encountered various villains who threaten New York City. He is the mentor and the third best of Miles Morales, the best friend of Harry Osborn, the boyfriend of Mary Jane Watson, the former friend turned the arch-nemesis of Doctor Otto Octavius, the third arch-nemesis of Venom and the arch-rival of Kraven the Hunter and Wilson Fisk.
He is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, who also voiced Alucard in Castlevania. In the Japanese voice-overs, he is voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu, whom also voiced Jonathan Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Part 1: Phantom Blood.
What Makes Him Pure Good?
Background
- While he does share the past of indirectly causing his uncle’s death by arrogantly letting a robber run past him and eventually kill the former like most of his counterparts, Peter subverted this corrupting quality by becoming Spider-Man, saving people and fighting crime in New York City over the course of the next 8 years.
- During the time he was dating the Black Cat, he tried mentoring her into becoming a hero and leaving behind her criminal past.
- Through his actions, he was able to gain the trust of the NYPD to the extent that the chief of police, Yuriko Watanabe, gave him her phone number
Marvel's Spider-Man
- Defeated Kingpin and exposed his crimes. Despite his defeat causing a major power vacuum and the events of the game to unfold, Spider-Man had no way of knowing that so it's unfair to put him at fault for it.
- Saved Gloria Davila from being killed in a mugging. Following this, he encouraged her to seek refuge at the Feast Shelter, eventually culminating in her becoming a manager for the business.
- In side quests, Spider-Man helped the citizens with their deeds, sometimes even stopping criminals and saving lives in the process.
- Stopped Kingpin from operating his crime empire in prison.
- Doesn't hate Norman despite him doing everything in his power to screw Otto over and being aware of his many faults, as Peter believes that the man who raised Harry can't be all that bad.
- Despite J. Jonah Jameson slandering him in his podcasts and during his time as the head of the Daily Bugle, he has no ill-will towards the man and admits he has a lot of valid points. He also wants to prove to him that he is acting with his best intentions.
- Stuck by Otto's side even when Norman pulled their funding.
- Fought against Shocker to prevent him causing further damages. Despite this, he was sympathetic to Herman when realizing that he was robbing against his will and that he was scared of who was threatening him.
- Attempted to console Miles after the death of his father. It was also his idea for him to volunteer at the Feast Shelter in order for him to process his grief.
- Saved Miles from being mugged by a group of thugs. He also gave the teenager advice on how to fight enemies shall he ever get in a similar situation again, which helped him fight off a few prisoners later on in the game.
- Stopped the Demons from terrorizing New York City.
- Stopped the Sinister Six from causing chaos in New York City.
- Stopped Martin Li from taking over the city after the arrest of Kingpin.
- Stopped Electro from killing the cops with the power generators.
- Stopped Scorpion from poisoning the cities reservoir.
- Stopped Rhino from causing anymore destruction across the city and endangering more lives.
- Saved Norman Osborn after he was dropped off of the Oscorp building by Doc Ock.
- While he refused to help Otto after defeating him, it was completely justified due to how disgusting he ended up becoming, and how him attacking New York City was all just to discredit Norman Osborn. Not to mention that he did try reaching out to him prior, only to give up after realizing how much of a lost cause he was.
- Chose to cure the whole city instead of Aunt May (his sole mother figure and by extension, only living relative), due to the latter wanting him to do so, making him the sole survivor of his family. Peter also mourned over his aunt’s death.
- Despite Black Cat's constant manipulation of him, he still tried to save her when realizing her pent house was rigged to explode and was devastated by her supposed death.
- When Yuri started going down a dark path due to Hammer Head's influence, Spider-Man tried being there to help her. He also attempted to stop her from killing Hammer Head after he had already subdued him, just coming up a few seconds short.
- When it’s later revealed that Yuri killed a Maggia Enforcer who was responsible for the murders of several people and was still hellbent on doing such acts, having become convinced that the justice system is skewed, he begged her to turn herself in calmly, albeit to no avail.
- Saved Silver Sable after Hammerhead kidnapped her to be tortured. During which, he also officially made amends with her.
- Sympathized with Sable after hearing her backstory and the state of her country.
- Defeated Hammerhead with Sable, preventing him from taking over New York.
- Took Miles under his wing after the boy gained spider powers, training him to be the second Spider-Man.
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- He and Miles helped police escort criminals.
- Saved Miles from being pulled into a helicopter's blades. The duo also pulled the helicopter out of the way of nearby civilians.
- It's worth noting that Peter never got mad at Miles for accidentally causing the crash in the first place, ensuring him that mistakes happen, and it is how one learns.
- Pulled various people out of the way during Rhino's rampage throughout the mall.
- When Rhino beat him into submission, he tried urging Miles to leave, putting his life over the teenager's despite being injured.
- Trusted Miles to look after New York while he went to Symkaria with Mary Jane, allowing the teenager to become his own hero during his absence.
- Left multiple challenges across the city for Miles in order to help him grow more experienced.
- Gives Miles advice on how much information he should share with his mother regarding his superhero life.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- He and Miles stop Sandman from wreaking havoc in New York. He also did this at the cost of losing his job as a teacher.
- They also collect his memory crystals following his rampage, allowing Marko to regain his sanity. The two also sympathize over what caused him to snap in the first place.
- Tried reasoning with Yuri, now going by the alias Wraith, to not kill the Flame and his followers despite what harm they intend to cause. Peter also chose not to arrest her for her more lethal approach towards criminals due to their friendship. He also understood that despite everything, her heart is still in the right place as she overall wants to save lives rather than hurt them.
- Saved civilians from being shredded by a ship's propeller before Miles steps in.
- Assured Miles that they will find Martin Li after the latter is captured by Kraven.
- Accepts Harry's job at working at the Emily-May foundation to heal the world.
- Saved many people from being killed in a rollercoaster crash when Kraven's hunters attack Coney Island.
- He and Harry rescue Tombstone after the latter is captured by Kraven. Peter also parts with Lonnie on good terms and is genuinely proud of him for wanting to reform.
- Comes to MJ and Curt Connors' aid when Kraven turns him back into the Lizard, even fatally getting stabbed in the process.
- Was desperate to get the black suit off of him and return it to Harry, as he needed it to hold back his genetic disease.
- While using the symbiote, he tried to use it to stop crimes and save people.
- Although he was reluctant at first and was passive-aggressive in doing so (because of the symbiote), he prioritized rescuing a civilian from being killed by a falling gunship rather than pursuing the Lizard.
- Cured Connors of the Lizard persona for good.
- Although Peter was incredibly jerkish, lethal and rude while wearing the black suit and almost killed Kraven and even MJ at certain points, it's unfair to put him at fault for it since Venom was corrupting him and was feeding on his insecurities to make him worse. Not to mention that he wasn't even conscious when it possessed him and hunted down MJ. Furthermore, he ultimately took it off thanks to Miles and was very ashamed of his behavior while he was wearing it.
- Despite his refusal to give Harry back the symbiote after removing it, it's justified considering how dangerous it is and he wanted to protect Harry from going through the same thing he did, since he was aware the symbiote's personality was now active.
- He and Miles rescued various people from being killed by the symbiotes in the subway tunnels, including Ganke and Rio.
- Rescued MJ from the symbiote's influence. Peter also apologized profusely for being a bad boyfriend and prioritizing his own problems over hers.
- Showed proudness of Miles for not only letting go of his hatred towards Martin Li, but also redeeming him.
- Was determined to save Harry from Venom's influence without killing him, despite Connors insisting that he was far too gone.
- During his and Venom's fight, he tried reaching out to Harry multiple times by reminding him of who he is.
- Ultimately saved Harry by disintegrating Venom, albeit at the cost of him being rendered comatose.
- While this technically means he did kill Venom, he was absolutely in the right for doing so as the symbiote was too dangerous and was impossible to contain or capture.
- Decided to take a break from being Spider-Man for a while to focus on restoring the Emily-May foundation in Harry's honor and his relationship with MJ, trusting Miles to look after New York in his absence.
Spider-Verse Trilogy
- In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it's revealed that he joined the Spider-Society, which was made to protect the multiverse from dangerous threats.
- Despite chasing Miles Morales from Earth-1610B, it was only because Peter believed (due to Miguel) that Miles is planning to risk the multiverse for selfish reasons.
Trivia
- Peter is one of the two Pure Good characters in the series that also has a boss fight, the other being MJ.
- This is similar to Venom, who is his arch-enemy and has a playable segment when escaping Oscorp.
- It was debated whether Peter still qualified as Pure Good since he had moral agency issues when Symbiote took over him, but ultimately came to a consensus that he will stay since he immediately subverted all the corrupting traits he had.
- It's possible Peter's status may get affected in the upcoming third Marvel's Spider-Man game or Beyond the Spider-Verse, the final installments in both trilogies.
- Peter, Mary Jane Watson, and Miles Morales are the only three Pure Goods to come from Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe.
