Tobey and Tom pointing at each other

This article pertains to a Pure Good with more than one version who is Pure Good!

NOTE: This article is for the film version of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, as the versions of him from the video games and novelizations were not Pure Good. Thus, only the film version's info and heroic deeds must be put here

Who am I? You sure you want to know? The story of my life is not for the faint of heart. If somebody said it was a happy little tale... if somebody told you I was your average ordinary guy, not a care in the world... somebody lied. But let me assure you, this like any story worth telling, is all about a girl. That girl. The girl next door. Mary Jane Watson. The woman I've loved since before I even liked girls. I'd like to tell you that's me next to her. Aw, heck, I'd even take him.
~ Peter Parker at the beginning of the first movie.
Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility." This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man.
~ Peter Parker's ending narration of the first movie.
Not everyone is meant to make a difference, but for me, the choice to live an ordinary life is no longer an option.
~ Peter Parker

Spider-Man (real name Peter Benjamin Parker) is the titular main protagonist of Sam Raimi's superhero film trilogy of the same name and a major charcter in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

He was a high school student who was bitten by a genetically altered "super" spider while on a school field trip. Endowed with the proportionate powers and abilities of a spider and following his uncle's tragic death, he intended to use his abilities for good; thus, becoming the crime-fighting superhero known to the public Spider-Man.

He is portrayed by Tobey Maguire.

What Makes Him Pure Good?

In General

  • Though he initially had corrupting qualities such as his vengeful tendencies and his arrogance, he manages to subvert all of these corrupting qualities by the time of No Way Home, having become much more wise, mature and assisting MCU Peter in his problems and prevented him from going down the same dark and vengeful path he once did.
  • Despite the high admirable standard of the MCU, Peter easily passes it due to his more complicated life, having less resources, and not having help from other heroes such as the Avengers or possessing Tony Stark's technology.
  • From Spider-Man 3 to Spider-Man: No Way Home, he has at least been dedicated to his job in saving countless lives in New York with little to no rest, likely doing his heroic job for over 20 years, as he was confirmed to be currently age 40 when meeting MCU and Webbverse counterparts.

Spider-Man

  • He has a very nice talk with Norman Osborn in the beginning of the film. Norman himself acknowledges Peter's potential future could be bright.
  • He tells Harry that spiders change colors to blend with the environment as a defense mechanism. This led to Harry telling it to Mary Jane, thus starting the relationship between the latter two.
  • He attempts to get out of the fight with Flash Thompson, telling the bully that he didn't want to hurt him. He even dodged Flash's attacks. While he would later defeat Flash by breaking his arm and punching him (which sent him flying towards the floor and in front of the teacher), he was only trying to defend himself so it was understandable, later justified because he did told Flash he didn't want to fight him, not to mention that Flash bullied him many, many times, so he had it coming. Plus, it was an accident since he was still finding out about his powers and didn't mean to punch him that hard. While he did feel good about beating Flash for the first time, with even Harry and the whole school congratulating him for doing so, he would later feel remorse when Mary Jane glares at him. He also apologizes for it later on.
  • While he didn't help the promoter stop Dennis Carradine (who indirectly played a role in Uncle Ben's death), this was because the promoter cheated him out on the wins, not to mention the promoter's reasoning was that Peter had beaten his opponent in less time than the flier had said and the fraction of money he gave wasn’t even equivalent to said time. He even regretted his decision later after it led to his uncle's death.
  • While he was shown to be rather rude and argumentative with Ben at first, it was because he was annoyed that he was trying to act like his father. Another one of the reasons he acted this way is because he was tired of being seen an inferior, weak individual among the crowd, like when he got bullied by Flash Thompson multiple times, and wanted to be bigger than that, though Peter felt great remorse over his behavior and eventually viewed Ben as his father. He even holds Ben's hand as he dies.
  • When he went to stop Dennis Carradine out of revenge by chasing him into a large, abandoned warehouse, Peter showed to only injure him in self-defense as when Peter had his guard down Dennis got smug and tried to kill him. Dennis ultimately brought his death on himself. Peter later admitted to MCU Peter that his death didn't make him feel any better, demonstrating that he lost his vengeful tendencies, and it took him a long time to learn to get through that darkness.
  • After his uncle's death, he remembers his words and chooses to use his powers for good and to protect the city.
  • He saves numerous New Yorkers to the point where citizens helped Spider-Man against the Green Goblin due to Spider-Man's reputation. Among them, he stopped people mugging grocers, muggers potentially stealing diamonds, and a mugger holding a gun to a woman.
  • During the Green Goblin's attack at the World Unity Festival, he saves Mary Jane from falling and stops the Green Goblin.
  • He saves Mary Jane from being raped by a gang of men.
  • He saves a baby from a burning building. He also attempted to save a woman in the flaming house, only to realize it was the Green Goblin.
  • Even though Goblin offered him a choice to join him, saying "Think of what we could accomplish. Think of what we could create", Peter refused to accept his offer and become a villain.
  • With help, he manages to save the lives of both Mary Jane and a trolley full of children from falling to their deaths, all while Goblin was trying to kill him.
  • After learning Norman was the Green Goblin, he spares his life despite the fact that Goblin was torturing him and threatened to painfully murder Mary Jane.
  • He honors Norman's request not to tell Harry about his identity, and gently carries his body back to Harry's mansion in spite of everything he has done.
  • At Norman Osborn's funeral, he embraces Harry as he mourns his father's death, feeling guilt over Norman's fate and the pain Harry was put through.
  • When Mary Jane confesses her love to him, rather than reveal his true feelings as well, he chooses to lie in order to protect her from any future threats.

Spider-Man 2

  • Gives kids advice not to play on the street in the opening (while it may look like a minor thing, playing in the streets is potentially very dangerous for children, therefore it was, in a way, a quite noble attitude of his part).
  • He initially refuses to take Aunt May's money until she insisted.
  • He does his best to be there for Mary Jane while juggling his life of crime-fighting.
  • When Dr. Octavius' fusion experiment begins to destabilize, he saves Harry from some crashing debris (despite Harry's hate for Spider-Man) and cuts off the source of power, preventing the miniature-sun from growing any larger or potentially killing any more people.
  • He stops Doc Ock from robbing a bank and killing Aunt May.
  • He stops a crime instead of going to Mary Jane's play, and still attempts to make it on-time.
  • He musters up the courage to reveal the truth to Aunt May about what happened with Uncle Ben and his role in his (Uncle Ben's) death.
  • Even after giving up his identity as Spider-Man and mostly losing his powers, he still chose to run into a burning building to save a little girl, and when he hears that there was someone who didn't make it, he feels incredibly guilty about not being able to save that civilian.
  • After talking to Aunt May and seeing the negative effect his absence was having on the city, he retakes his mantle as Spider-Man.
  • When Mary Jane asks if he loves her, Peter tells her he doesn't, sacrificing his chance at happiness with her in order to fulfill his role as Spider-Man. Then, he saves Mary Jane from being crushed by a car thrown by Doctor Octopus.
  • He saves the passengers from a runaway train from plummeting to their deaths, nearly dying in the process.
  • When the passengers decide to protect Peter when Doctor Octopus prepares to fight them again, he urges the other passengers to stay back so he can fight Doctor Octopus himself.
  • He reveals his secret identity to Doctor Octopus, reminding him of who he once was and successfully convincing him to redeem himself and stop the fusion machine from destroying all of New York, to which he sacrificed his own life in the process.
  • He saves Mary Jane from being crushed by a wall.
  • When the two are alone, he explains to her why they can't be together, since she'd be in danger against any of his future enemies.
  • When Mary Jane chooses to be with Peter and take the risks with him, Peter expresses his sincere gratitude towards her.

Spider-Man 3

  • When fighting with Harry, he attempts to reason with him and settle things peacefully, trying to explain the circumstances behind Norman's death. In addition, when Harry got injured, he attempted to resuscitate him and got him to a hospital in spite of their fight minutes ago.
  • He saves Gwen Stacy from falling to her death.
  • Although he kissed Gwen as Spider-Man at a parade in his honor, he only did it as a stage performance for the public and had no intention of cheating on Mary Jane. He even tries to explain this to Mary Jane when she calls him out for reenacting "their kiss" with another girl. However, he does apologize for it later on.
  • When he previously yelled at Mr. Ditkovich under the Symbiote's influence, he later apologizes to him for his behavior.
  • He rightfully exposes Eddie Brock for forging a fake picture of Spider-Man robbing a bank. While breaking Eddie's camera out of spite and slamming him onto the forging "photo" was wrong, the latter was understandable because he had every right to be mad at Eddie for plagiarizing one of his photos just to steal the promotion he wanted/deserved, not to mention what Eddie did was dishonest, unprofessional and unjustifiable.
    • It's also highly implied that if Peter didn't break Eddie's camera, Eddie would still falsify his own authentic picture of Spider-Man, all for the same reasons. Even if Peter wasn't wearing the Symbiote, he would've also given Eddie a choice, either he will expose the fraud or have Eddie come clean on his own terms, only doing the former if Eddie behaved the same way.
  • While wearing the black suit, he still tried to do good things, such as stopping criminals and saving innocent people's lives (unlike Eddie who would later become Venom and murdered people).
    • While Peter becomes somewhat of a ladies-man due to the symbiote's effects, as shown from his flirting interactions with Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy and Ursula Ditkovich, he was only trying to get over Mary Jane, who was forced to dump him. Also, unlike Eddie, who is perverted, Peter still gave them and other women he came upon space and remained friends with them; he allowed Gwen to leave him with no trouble when she realized he was only using her to get back at Mary Jane, and from her and her father's presence at Harry's funeral, they still remain on good terms. Betty also secretly had a crush on Peter and actually would've give him permission to kiss her if Jameson hadn't walked up on them.
    • Although Peter was incredibly jerkish, lethal, vengeful and rude while wearing the black suit, destroyed Eddie's camera out of spite, slamming the latter onto his framed "photo", forcing Jameson to give him the staff photographer job at double the money, almost killed Sandman and Harry and later hitting Mary Jane, it's unfair to put him at fault for it since the symbiote suit was corrupting him. Even before and while wearing the suit, he had understandable reasons to be angry at the those who hurt and/or wronged him. Furthermore, after accidentally hitting Mary Jane and ashamed of his behavior, he begins to see how much the Symbiote has changed him, then goes to a church to remove said Symbiote, freeing himself from its control.
  • He calls Aunt May shortly after being released from the Symbiote's control, accepting responsibility for his terrible behavior and for hitting Mary Jane, giving back Aunt May's ring and telling her he wasn't ready.
  • When Mary Jane is captured by Venom and Sandman, he goes to Harry to ask him for his assistance, visibly showing guilt upon seeing he scarred the right half of Harry’s face and blinded him in his right eye in their fight, and when he refuses, Peter still attempts to fight both villains by himself.
  • As he's restrained by Venom, he attempts to reason with Eddie and convince him to take off the suit, albeit to no avail.
  • He rips Eddie away from the Symbiote, then destroys it with one of Harry's bombs.
  • He attempts to save Eddie when he jumps back into the Symbiote, crying out his name in horror and is saddened when Eddie dies along with the Symbiote, even though Eddie deserved his death for all his horrible actions.
  • He forgives Sandman for accidentally killing his Uncle Ben after learning the truth about what drove him to the act, somberly noting that he'd done terrible things as well, and allows Sandman to escape peacefully. Peter forgiving Sandman also honors his Uncle Ben’s wish that Aunt May told him about when they were discussing the “death” of Ben’s killer at the hands of Spider-Man, she says “Uncle Ben meant the world to us, but he wouldn’t want us living one second with revenge in our hearts.” By Peter forgiving Sandman, he ultimately honors Uncle Ben’s wish, listening to Aunt May’s advice.
  • The fact Peter admits to having done terrible things means he responsibly recognizes he was in the wrong instead of putting all the blame on the symbiote's influence.
  • He sits beside Harry as he dies in his and Mary Jane's arms, sincerely apologizing for having fought and hurt him (physically and verbally) before, tearfully declaring Harry as his best friend.
    • In his narration, he acknowledges Harry as an example of overcoming one’s inner demons and being the best version of themselves. Even after several years had passed at the time of Spider-Man: No Way Home, he still misses his best friend. In his brief dialogue with Ned Leeds, who asked if he has a best friend, he told him he did had one as he expressed sorrow over losing Harry who sacrificed himself after Venom tried to kill him.
  • Mutually begins reconciling his relationship with Mary Jane. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, he tells his Webbverse counterpart they were ultimately able to make things work.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

  • After being transported to the MCU and realizing that a different version of himself had his identity as Spider-Man exposed to the public, Peter sensed him in distress and set out to find and help him.
  • He and Amazing Spider-Man comfort their MCU counterpart over his universe's Aunt May, who got killed by the Green Goblin, and tell him about their own mistakes, informing him that revenge is not the right path to follow and the importance of being Spider-Man from their deceased loved ones. This convinces his MCU counterpart to not send the multiversal visitors back to their worlds to die.
  • He helps MCU Peter in his plan to cure all the Spider-Man villains instead of killing them.
  • He develops a successful cure for Norman Osborn, stating that he'd been "thinking about it for a long time". This indicates that he felt remorse over Norman's descent into villainy and death, which also caused Harry’s transformation into the New Goblin and self-sacrifice, and bears no hatred for his past actions as the Green Goblin.
    • He already knew MCU Peter was still thinking of killing the Green Goblin while hesitating to let him create the cure, so when MCU Peter made a conflicted facial expression which he noticed, he reminded him of their duty of curing all the villains, including the Goblin, because it's what they do.
  • When Amazing Spider-Man remarks that he's lame since the villains he fought aren't as cool as the other two, he assures Amazing Spider-Man that he's amazing and not to devalue himself.
  • Cures Sandman of his powers.
  • Upon witnessing Doctor Strange scolding his MCU counterpart, he immediately rushed over to his side and defended him.
  • Saved Amazing Spider-Man's Dr. Connors from falling to his death.
  • He stopped MCU Peter from giving into his anger and killing the Green Goblin, even though it risked him getting stabbed in the back by his old enemy. Luckily, he survives this attack, allowing MCU Peter to inject the anti-serum into Norman, thus erasing his Green Goblin persona for good.
  • He and Webbverse Spider-Man hug MCU Peter before he goes to talk to Ned and MJ.

Trivia

  • Originally, this version of Spider-Man was classified as Near Pure Good, but officially became Pure Good after stripping himself of all of his corrupting factors in No Way Home.
    • This is shown by how he cured Sandman despite killing his uncle and saved Norman from being killed by a vengeful version of himself, showing that he had truly overcome his vengeful tendencies.
  • He is the second version of Peter to be Pure Good preceded by his comic book and animated series counterparts and followed by his Spectacular Spider-Man, Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel's Spider-Man versions.
    • The version of him from the first script of Spider-Man 2 does fight Doctor Octopus who was originally written to be Pure Evil before he was changed to a more sympathetic portrayal.
    • In the novelizations by Peter David, he does fight against a Pure Evil villain in the form of the Green Goblin, although ironically that version of Peter does not count as Pure Good due to retaining his corrupting factors from the trilogy. Coincidentally, this makes Spider-Man Pure Good in the movies but not in the novels, while the Green Goblin is Pure Evil in the novels but not in the movies.
  • It has yet to be decided if his video game counterpart qualifies as Pure Good.
  • He, alongside his Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, are the icons of Other Uses.
