NOTE: This is a composite profile of the mainstream versions of Superman who undergoes major changes to his character from the cosmic retcons that have happened in the DC universe.

Dreams save us. Dreams lift us up and transform us. And on my soul I swear: until my dream where dignity, honor, and justice becomes the reality we all share I'll never stop fighting. Ever.
~ Superman

Kal-El, also known as Clark Joseph Kent, (his adopted human identity), and best known as Superman, is one of the main protagonists of the DC Comics Universe.

He was an Kryptonian that was sent to Earth as an infant by his parents so he could survive the destruction of Krypton. After landing on Smallville, Kansas, he became the adopted son of Jonathan and Martha Kent after they found him on his space pod. After learning about his powers, he decided to use them for good, fighting off crime and other powerful threats, becoming the legendary hero known to the universe as Superman.

Due to his incredible god-like powers, he's heavily regarded as one of the most powerful beings in the DC universe.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

In General[]

  • Despite his god-like powers, Superman is selfless, devoting himself and his power to helping others instead of dominating them.
  • He generally does not really pride himself in his achievements and is quite humble about them.
  • He tries to avoid violence, and treats even his foes with respect, all of that despite having more than enough strength to pummel his enemies to dust and blood with reckless abandon.
  • In addition to that he doesn’t necessarily fight those who are villainous, instead persuading them to change their ways by putting them in karmic scenarios.
  • He helps Batman become trusting to others and even helps him make up for his actions.
  • He has saved Metropolis, New and Prime Earth, and the entire multiverse on innumerable occasions.

  • In his early career, he stopped wife-beaters from beating their wives.
  • He also prevented small-time criminals and corrupt politicians.
  • Defeated Colonel Future.
  • Joined in with the heroes to fight against the Anti-Monitor.
  • In his early run, he was jerkish at some points in his heroic adventures, but soon showed none of these remarks in his later life.
  • Would always save Lois Lane and even remain polite to her, especially when she was rude to him while he was Clark Kent.

  • As Superboy, he joined the legion of superheroes to save lives.
  • Saved Pete Ross from Booby Trap alongside with Ultra Boy.
  • Revived the lightning Rod.
  • Defended Star Boy during court who was acting on self-defense against a hostile Naltorian .
  • For a short period in time, he was the chairman of the LSH who made recruits .
  • Defeated Prince Evillo and his Devils Dozen alongside with Supergirl.
  • Tried to stop the Sun-Eater.
  • Rewarded Lana Lang for honoring his secret identity and got her to help out the Legion.
  • He along countless other superheroes teamed up to stop the Anti-Monitor.

  • He stopped the Joker from killing everyone in attendance at an assembly in the United Nations Building.
  • Sacrificed his life to defeat Doomsday and save all of Metropolis.
  • Although he refused to give pity for his regime counterpart and called him a hypocrite, this is justified because he knew that he went too far to be sympathized with and faked his own tragedy.
  • In Superman #705, he saved a boy from his abusive father.
  • In Adventures of Superman (Vol. 2) #5, he protected an alien baby named Aria from people trying to kill her.

  • Attempted to cut off his hair in solidarity honor for Martha's cancer.
  • In Action Comics #987, he brought a vaccine to a village in Logamba. He also saved Hispanic-American workers from a xenophobic gunman.
  • In Dark Nights: Death Metal, he led an army of heroes to stop the Darkest Knight's army and save the multiverse from being destroyed.

  • He comforted a suicidal girl and saved her life in issue #10.

  • Trivia[]

    • Due to the nature of DC, in which several writers try to cooperate with each other and occasionally contradict each other, Superman's status as Pure Good is depending on the writer. However, while some writers depict him with corrupting qualities, the vast majority of DC writers over several decades have had him stay consistent in his Pure Good characterization.
    • Superman from the 1933 short story, The Reign of Superman does not validate this version of Superman to be adaptational due to the versions being so drastically different, that they don't even follow the same general characterization of each other, not to mention that the 1933 Superman isn't Clark Kent/Kal-El.
