The Big Friendly Giant, better known as simply The BFG, is the titular character and deuteragonist of the 1982 children's book of the same name written by Roald Dahl, as well as its 1989 animated and 2016 live-action/CGI film adaptations.
He was voiced by David Jason and portrayed by Mark Rylance via motion capture in the 1989 animated film and 2016 live-action/CGI hybrid films respectively.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
- The entire reason he was mistreated by the other giants in the first place is because he was the only one of them to not eat humans and to have empathy for mankind, even creating pleasant dreams for children and capturing nightmares to prevent them from scaring kids.
- While he did kidnap Sophie early on in the story, he regretted doing so because of Sophie's family he likely left worried sick about her. When Sophie told him about her life as an orphan living in an abusive orphanage, he's moved to tears out of sadness for the girl and offered to take care of her instead.
- Protecting Sophie from the other giants who would most certainly have eaten her had they found out about her.
- Respecting the rules of Giant Country that no giant shall kill another giant to the point where he puts up no resistance against the other giants' abuse.
- Exposing the existence of giants to the Queen of England once the other giants posed a threat to Sophie's safety, and leading the British army to Giant Country to capture the man-eating giants.
- After Fleshlumpeater managed to escape being captured, the BFG finally stands up to him and calls him for what he truly he, even knowing it went against the rules of the giants.
- Despite being greatly injured by Fleshlumpeater, the BFG still rushed to Sophie's aid when the monstrous giant tried to devour her and defeated him using nightmare before the army arrived to capture him as well.
- Taking Sophie back to Giant Country with him for the two of them to live happily together.
- While he does make some snide remarks at mankind, this is less out of malice and more because of his lack of trust towards them for being the only species willing to attack and kill one another (something not even giants could do). But even that didn't stop him from treating every human he came across with the same amount of respect and generosity he would with a fellow giant, as shown by him sharing what he had with Sophie and refusing her suggestion of stealing crops from humans instead of eating a diet that consisted purely of snozzcumbers.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the two heroes from The BFG to be pure good, along with Sophie.
