Tohru Sohma (née Honda) is the main protagonist of the manga/anime series Fruits Basket and one of the overarching protagonists of its sequel series Fruits Basket Another. She is the daughter of the late Kyoko Honda (née Katsunuma) and the late Katsuya Honda.
Following the death of her mother, she began living in a household owned by Shigure Sohma, serving as the landlandy of the house. She is the love interest and later wife of Kyo Sohma, and the mother of Hajime Sohma as well as two more unnamed children.
In Japanese, she was voiced by Yui Horie in the 2001 adaptation and Manaka Iwami in the 2019 adaptation. In English, she was voiced by Laura Bailey for both adaptations who also voiced Mary Jane Watson from Marvel’s Spider-Man and Blaze the Cat from the Sonic series.
She's very caring and compassionate towards everyone around her. Even Akito, a person who's disliked by almost the entirety of the Sohma family.
Even when others wrong her, it doesn't take long for her to forgive them. Such as Akito who, as previously mentioned in the previous point, is despised by the rest of the Sohmas after making their lives a living nightmare.
She's the only person who can easily bring out his nicer and protective side of the generally aggressive and arrogant Kyo. In fact, she soon became the main reason why Kyo learned how to control his temper and act more considerate and caring towards other people.
In spite of her resentment towards her father Katsuya (due to the fact that his death is what led to her mother, Kyoko, temporarily act neglectful towards her and even attempt suicide at one point), she still recognizes that it's wrong to feel that way and doesn't bring herself to genuinely hate him.
Eventually, Tohru would come to let go of her resentment and shows her late father nothing but love and kindness.
Fruits Basket[]
During her years in middle school, she became the first person to form a friendship with Hanajima who was a victim of extreme bullying to that point.
Despite the insults given to her by her father's relatives, she never shows any anger towards them and is even shown talking to her aunt in a formal and polite tone.
She ended up lifting the curse the plagued that Sohma family throughout the series, thanks to her kindness and love she shows towards them.
She was the one who encouraged, and eventually convinced, Kisa to come out of her shell and open up to others. This has led to Kisa becoming incredibly clingy towards and possessive of Tohru.
Despite Rin's attempts to push her away, Tohru still helped her no matter how hostile Rin was towards her, even allowing her to cry on her shoulder.
Her kindness towards Akito, despite every atrocities she has done (including attempting to murder Tohru), helped change her for the better.
