~ Mala regarding Toothless' bond with Hiccup |
Toothless is the deuteragonist of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
He is a Night Fury, a species of extremely skilled and intelligent dragons that were hunted to near extinction by his archenemy: Grimmel the Grisly. He eventually meets and bonds with a Viking boy named Hiccup, who names him Toothless, successfully taming him and leading the two of them to creating a work where Vikings and dragons can co-exist together.
Toothless is also the ancestor of Thunder.
His vocal effects are provided by Randy Thom.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
General[]
- Like most dragons in the franchise, Toothless has full agency and not merely a mindless animal.
- Toothless often holds back when fighting other dragons and dosen't try to harm them lethally.
How to Train Your Dragon[]
- Decided to spare Hiccup for refusing to kill him and free him, despite knowing that he was the one who shot him down. And, while he did initially attack Hiccup after being released, it was only out of self-defence.
- Saves Hiccup from being killed by Hookfang in the dragon training arena.
- Alongside Hiccup himself, Toothless slays the Red Death by blowing out its fire box - therefore ending its control over the dragons that live near Berk and putting an end to the war between the dragons and the Vikings.
Dragons: Race to the Edge[]
- Saves Hiccup's life on numerous occasions, often when meeting a new hostile dragon.
- Acts as Hiccup's moral support and even helps him to calm down whenver he is acting brash or reckless, such as during the episode "All Bark, No Bite" when Hiccup and Stoick have an argument over the fact that Johann betrayed them, leading to Toothless and Stoick's dragon Skullcrusher to force the two of them to apologize to one another.
- Defeats Krogan during the final episode when he steals the Bewilderbeast egg, putting an end to the war with the dragon hunters and stopping Krogan from delivering said egg to Drago Bludvist.
How to Train Your Dragon 2[]
- Toothless manages to overcome the mind control of Drago's Bewilderbeast through his bond with Hiccup, and together they face the Alpha dragon. When Hiccup and Toothless are frozen in ice by the Bewilderbeast, Toothless breaks out of the ice and challenges it for the position of Alpha, successfully breaking the other dragons free of its control and having them move to Toothless' aid. Toothless then blows one of the Bewilderbeast's tusks off, causing it to flee into the ocean and putting an end to the war with Drago.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World[]
- Using his position as Alpha, Toothless helps Hiccup to create a dragon and Viking utopia on Berk where they live together peacefully.
- Defeats Grimmel's Deathgrippers in order to save Hiccup's life.
- After it becomes clear that the dragons belong in the Hidden World, Toothless and Hiccup say goodbye to one another and as the Alpha dragon Toothless leads all of them back to the Hidden World, therefore keeping them safe from future hunters permanently.
How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming[]
- Alongside the Light Fury, Toothless locates his children Dart, Pouncer, and Ruffrunner when they sneak out of the Hidden World to visit New Berk. Toothless and the Light Fury bring them back to the Hidden World, thus keeping the dragons and humans separate from one another once again.
Dragons: The Nine Realms[]
- Passed down the position of Alpha dragon to future Night Lights, eventually reaching the Alpha Night Light and Thunder in the modern era.
