“ | Time. Space. Reality. It's more than a linear path. It's a prism of endless possibility, where a single choice can branch out into infinite realities, creating alternate worlds from the ones you know. I am The Watcher. I am your guide through these vast new realities. Follow me and dare to face the unknown, and ponder the question... What if? | „ |
~ Uatu during the opening credits of What If...? |
“ | I observe all that transpires here, but I do not, cannot, will not interfere. For I am the Watcher. | „ |
~ Uatu's most famous quote. |
“ | I have seen everything that has ever happened. Ever will happen. Ever could happen. And yet, what the hell is this?! | „ |
~ Another one of Uatu’s most famous quotes, after Infinity Ultron sensed him. |
Uatu the Watcher is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is an omniscient being and the most prominent member of the Watchers who observes the Marvel multiverse and the alternate branched timelines that protrude from it, but he is unable to directly interfere with them. However, he breaks his oath once one universe bears an Ultron that obtained the Infinity Stones and sensed the Watcher's presence, tasking a group of alternates to stop the artificial intelligence.
He is voiced by Jeffery Wright.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He genuinely cares about the Multiverse and does whatever he can to protect it from any multiversal threats.
- Although he breaks his oath of not intervening several times, they are pragmatic for several reasons:
- The entire multiverse was threatened by Infinity Ultron, so the Watcher took action by forming the Guardians of the Multiverse to stop him.
- Feeling upset over alternate Riri Williams always dying in every timeline, he encouraged one variant to fight back against Quentin Beck.
- He did not like to see children killed, so he flicked off some of Sonny Burch's soldiers to save Kwai Jun-fan's life.
- Even though he was emotionless and enigmatic at the start, he sheds these qualities after bonding with Captain Carter.
- Despite the high admirable standards of the MCU, Uatu stands out as one of the most admirable heroes for his role in defeating Infinity Ultron, who is the most heinous villain of the whole franchise that attempted to destroy the whole multiverse.
Season 1[]
- Although he refused to help Strange Supreme prevent his universe's destruction, it was to keep his oath of not intervening and not to mention, there wasn't much he could do about it.
- Knowing he could not defeat Ultron, he formed a team of multiversal heroes from several different universes to stop him.
- Recruiting Prince Killmonger into the team indirectly saved his universe from his tyranny.
- Along with Strange Supreme, he trapped Arnim Zola and Prince Killmonger for eternity when they began fighting for the Infinity Stones.
- He returned the heroes to their native universes.
- He was sympathetic to Black Widow because her universe was destroyed Infinity Ultron, which was why he allowed her to be apart of a new universe where a version of her is already dead. This resulted in her defeating the Loki in that universe.
- Before the season closes, he vows to protect the multiverse he watches.
Season 2[]
- He recruited Captain Carter to save a universe from an incursion.
- He mourned Strange Supreme's death. He also returned Kahhori to her home universe.
- He allowed Captain Carter to view the multiverse with him.
What If...? an Immersive Story[]
TBA
Season 3[]
- He encourages Riri Williams to fight back against Quentin Beck, which causes her to get up and end his tyranny for good.
- He saves Kwai Jun-fan by flicking off the soldiers that were after him on the train.
- He stops his fellow Watchers from killing the Guardians of the Multiverse. He even gave them his powers to help them defend themselves from the Watchers.
- After they were defeated and redeemed themselves, he encourages his fellow Watchers to start watching Strange Supreme's universe.
- He invites Byrdie, Kahhori and Storm to watch the multiverse ends as the series closes.
