Ultraman Leo , also known as Gen Otori, is a major character in the Ultraman franchise, serving as the titular main protagonist of the Tokusatsu series of the same name produced by Tsuburaya productions in 1974-1975. Unlike the other Ultras, he originally came from Planet of L77 of the Leo constellation until it was eventually destroyed by Alien Magma and the Gillas brothers, forcing him to live on Earth where he began teaming with Ultraseven and MAC in order to defend the Earth from invaders. In addition to this, he is also the brother of Astra and the master of Ultraman Zero

What Has He Done[]

In General[]

  • Due to how similar Earth was to his previous home L77, he grew to cherish it and ultimately made it his goal to protect it throughout the rest of the series.
  • During his time on Earth, he served as a parental/brother figure to Tooru and Kaoru Umenda, often by giving them advice and words of encouragement while also trying to make them happy in any way he could furthermore, once he and Tooru started moving in with the Miyama family following the deaths of and Kaoru and Momoko Yamaguchi, he went on to comfort him whenever he felt depressed. To a lesser extent, he also served as this to his students at the Jonan Sports Center as although he didn’t hang out with them as much, he still went out his way to help them with things and support them any chance he got
  • Despite how harsh Dan and the rest of MAC were to him at times, especially whenever he made mistakes, he never held anything against them and usually went out of his way to be nice to them regardless.
  • Whenever he lost a fight to an alien invader or monster, he always trained himself harder in order to pull off a certain technique , even if it sometimes meant putting himself through a lot of pain in the process
  • While he did technically kill most of his enemies, it was usually out of necessity in order to prevent them from causing more death and destruction. Despite this though, he did occasionally spare some of them (e.g. Ron, Bango, Rembolar, Uringa, Kirara, and Taishoh) and in some instances felt remorse whenever he killed them (e.g. Alien Guiro and Alien Gurio)
  • During Commander Black’s invasion, he went on many investigations with Tooru that involved the saucer beasts in order to stop them from causing more destruction. Additionally, around this time, he also managed to teach the local youths self-defense tips after he had become unemployed from the sports center. Ironically though by doing this, it also led to them saving him and Tooru during the finale, specifically by taking down Commander Black himself when he was holding the former hostage
  • During the first few episodes of his debut series, he was initially very hot-headed and reckless as he would often go against Dan/Seven’s orders and go into battles unprepared. However, it should be noted that most of his reckless actions were driven out of concern for his friends and loved ones when he thought they were in danger. Furthermore, by the end of his series, he managed to subvert these qualities and become more wiser and mature as a result.
  • Upon meeting Mebius on Earth for the first time, he was initially very cold and harsh towards him due to his failure to defeat Alien Reflect, even going so far as to say that he couldn’t trust him as Earth’s protector until he actually won the fight by himself. However, upon seeing his determination while training, the overall bond he had with GUYs, as well as him getting the upper hand in his rematch, he ultimately grew to respect him and even went on to entrust him and GUYS as Earth’s protectors once Reflect was finally defeated. Furthermore, despite how much he talked about relying on one’s self, he eventually chose to transform into battle in order to help Mebius when Alien Reflect was holding GUYS hostage.
  • Due to him and Astra training Zero during his exile, he is responsible for the latter becoming one of the most skilled and powerful Ultras in the land of light Additionally, during his exile, he also manage to help teach him the concept of humility and ultimately become a more selfless hero as a result.

Background[]

  • During the destruction of his home planet L777, he briefly attempted to get his younger brother Astra out of some rubble
  • Prior to joining MAC, he also worked at the Jonan Sports Center as a gym couch/martial arts teacher/ tutor to children for over 2 years

Ultraman Leo[]

As Gen Otori[]

  • After properly introducing himself to Dan, he agreed to join the defense force team MAC in order to help him defend Earth while Seven was out of commission
  • Upon being asked by Kaoru if he was gonna quit the sports center in favor of MAC, he immediately reassured her that this wasn’t the case and that he would show up there in spare time whenever he wasn’t on duty.
  • Once Momoko recovered from her injury after the Gillas brother’s defeat, he apologized to her for “getting her hurt”, only for Momoko to reassure him that it wasn’t his fault.
  • While at the sports center in the beginning episode 3, he helped give Tooru some tips while he was climbing monkey bars, giving him the chance to complete it
  • After the murders of Tooru and Kaoru’s dad and MAC Officer Suzuki at the hands of Alien Tsuruk, he immediately became determined to avenge them Following this he then went on to try and save Dan when the latter was about to confront Alien Tsuruk
  • After defeating Alien Tsuruk, he made a promise to Tooru and Kaoru that he would visit them at Momoko’s place and hang out with them.
  • While on a trip with Tooru and Kaoru in the beginning of episode 5, he attempted to play the role of Tooru’s dad upon noticing how lonely he was compared to the other students. Unfortunately, before he could do much, he was immediately called in by MAC to deal with Kanedoras. Despite that though, he felt bad about it and even apologized for Tooru while he was leavingFollowing this, he then spent the remainder of the episode trying to cheer him while training for his battle against Kanedoras, with his attempts ultimately working out in the end by the time he began battling Kanedoras as Leo.Additionally, after Kanedoras’ defeat, him, Dan, and Kaoru all cheered Tooru on as he was practicing a gym stunt over a log
  • After failing to save Jun Shirato’s girlfriend Yuko during the beginning of episode 6, he spent the rest of it trying to avenge her in order to make it up to him Additionally, after seeing the other MAC officers (Shirato included) risk their lives in order to stop Alien Karly, he also spent the remainder of the episode training in the woods in order to find a new technique that would defeat the latter
  • Upon realizing that the flower that Kaoru had found was from outer space, he became reluctant to destroy it as he knew how much she had liked it. However, even after Momoko and Kaoru learned the hard way that his warnings about it being dangerous were right, he didn’t hold anything against them and even clarified to them that it was Kendoros fault instead since he was one who was controlling the flower in the first place. Furthermore, after getting up on his feet, he made a promise to Kaoru that he would help her find a new flower once Kendoros was defeated, something he stayed true to by the end of the episode when he and Momoko took her flower picking Additionally, (on a minor note) while flower picking with Kaoru and Momoko, he went on try and defend them from some bees when he thought they were bothering them.
  • Upon noticing a seemingly random citizen still evacuating while MAC was battling against Vikira, he chose to eject from one of the MACCY jets mid battle against Aoshima’s orders in order to help the citizen get to safety, even if this act resulted in him getting temporarily suspended in the process. Fortunately though, by doing this, he also managed to discover Vikria’s weakness (his backside) and later use to his advantage while fighting the monster as Leo. Additionally, later on in the episode, he went on to save Aoshima just as he was about to get crushed by Vikira. In a bit of irony though, Aoshima had similarly disobeyed an order as well, which briefly led to Gen defending him and to trying to talk Dan out of suspending him following Vikira’s defeat
  • In episode 10, he saved Dan from getting killed by Ron by using himself as a distraction
  • After transforming Ron into a puppy, he gave him to Kaoru as a gift after seeing how depressed she was over the loss of her mother
  • While at the sports center in episode 11, he intercepted a fight that was going on between a kid named Ichiro and a kid named Akira
  • Upon realizing that his and MAC’s failure to save his uncle had made Ichiro give up on trying to be like the former, he became determined to avenge his uncle and give him back the proper motivation he needed, something he ultimately manage to succeed at by the end of the episode. Additionally, while helping him practice, he briefly saved him from accidentally falling off, which somehow also led to him discovering a way to defeat Alien Kettle as a result.
  • After realizing that he had let Alien Vibe frame him from murder twice, he briefly considered quitting MAC in order to avoid getting any more innocent people hurt, even if Dan ultimately forbade him from actually going through with it
  • Out of guilt for letting Alien Vibe frame him, he refused to stop finding the secret behind the alien’s hidden technique. In fact, even when the other members of MAC called him to clarify that he had been proven innocent, he continued what he was doing, having come to the conclusion that he didn’t deserve it. Furthermore, even after saving Dan, he still went out of his way to apologize to him once he changed back into Gen.
  • While training with Takeshi in order to defeat Antales, he went out to save Tooru from falling off the concerte culvert, thus giving him an idea on how to beat the Kaiju.
  • During the beginning of episode 16, he was the only MAC member who didn’t automatically disregard Tooru when he claimed he had seen a “ghost” (Alien Atler) Additionally, he was also the first one to start investigating once Alien Atler started making her presence more known, ultimately culminating in him saving Momoko
