Pure Good Wiki

Hello everyone! This is my first pure good proposal of a fanon character and I will be proposing Shigeki Yanagi from Tetro danganronpa pink. I decided to propose him seeing as Shuichi Saihara is currently headlined as pure good, and I have been meaning to propose Shigeki for a long time so this is a good time.

Shigeki Yanagi

Who is the character? What is the work?

Shigeki Yanagi is one of the 16 students trapped in the session 1 killing game experiment in Tetro Danganronpa Pink. He is a major character, and is a teenager with carpal tunnel who was living with his mother until he was kidnapped. So far into the story he is still alive.

Tetro danganronpa pink is a fanmade Danganronpa audio drama created by Vonbabbit. The plot consists of a group of scientists who kidnapped 16 high school students into a school with a strange rabbit-like creature called Monomoko. Shigeki Yanagi had a major role during the 1st trial as his testimony was necessary to catch the 1st killer.

What makes him close to pure good?

Before the killing game?

While not much is known about Shigeki before the killing game, what we do know is that he was close with his mother and sister, and he defended his mother from his abusive father until he left. While it is mentioned that he cheated on his girlfriend Lilah this was because she was abusing him and he wanted out but she emotionally blackmailed him into staying, and the girl he cheated his girlfriend with was aware that he was in a relationship with Lilah but made moves on Shigeki either way.

During the killing game?

  • He is generally a very chivalrous person who seeks to protect those he cares about, especially women. He is also frustrated by how other men are inconsiderate towards women.
  • Albeit reluctantly, he gave his testimony proving that Hitomi Sasaki was the blackened and helped solve the first trial.
  • When Hitomi was found guilty of killing Isono Miki after she snapped from the sleep deprivation motive, he begged Monomoko to execute him instead of Hitomi.
  • He forgave Hitomi after her death for attempting to escape even if it would have resulted in his death.
  • During chapter 2 when epinephrine gas is released which causes Kazutoshi Kamimura to have complications with his multiple sclerosis, Shigeki tries to help him in whatever way he can.
  • Throughout the killing game he does everything he can to raise morale such as when he humoured Ruiko and Nishino roleplaying as princessess and he even served them tea.
  • In chapter 3 he was extremely distraught when he found out that Mai Hayashi was beaten to near death by one of the scientists for trying to break down a door that would lead to the outside world.
  • After Mai attempts to break down the door but fails, Shigeki bravely tries to lockpick the door in secret so as to save everyone from the killing game while risking his life in the process, this is specially admirable considering that the motive was the building’s temperature being slowly lowered until it was at an almost deadly level.
  • When Ken Hasegawa and Masanari Wada become extremely depressed in the fourth chapter after the death of Kazutoshi Kamimura and Manami Tsuno respectively, Shigeki tries to help them cope through their trauma and loss.
  • When Ruiko tells him about her parents abusing her and overexploiting her talents he offers to let her escape her situation and stay in his place for as long as she needs to.
  • When Takeshi Ojima accidentally opens his stitches he bandages Takeshi’s wound.
  • When Monomoko begins regaining her humanity Shigeki attempts to redeem her and convince her to free everyone from the killing game and is very nice about it despite everything monomoko has done.

Potential mitigating factors?

While he did cheat on his girlfriend Lilah he can’t be blamed for it considering multiple factors.

Firstly, Lilah was physically and mentally abusive to him and he wanted to leave her. The only reason why he didn’t leave her is because of her emotional leverage and general manipulation of him.

Secondly, the girl that Yanagi cheated on Lilah with was Lilah’s friend who knew of the situation and promised to help him escape Lilah’s abuse and made moves on him first, it is also implied that Lilah intentionally set this up as a messed up loyalty test of sorts. Which makes the situation even more clearly not as bad as it may seem at first. Obviously because Yanagi failed this loyalty test his girlfriend dumped him.

Thirdly Shigeki Yanagi feels remorse about this even though none of it was his fault.

Lastly the narrative portrays Lilah and her friend as extremely toxic and unsympathetic people, with Yanagi being painted in a positive light.

While he was hesitant to testify against Hitomi Sasaki during the class trial this is because she had guilt-tripped him and it is made clear in the story. Shigeki also realizes that Sasaki was wrong later on so even if this was corrupting, Shigeki overcame it.

Admirable standards?

The competition is surprisingly low as not many of the students are particularly admirable but here are a few people worth mentioning.

Mai Hayashi.

Mai Risked her life by trying to break down the exit door, which led to her being beaten to near death. While she was also a bounty hunter who stopped various heinous criminals, only one case is known and it is almost entirely off-screen with everything else entirely relying on fridge brilliance, as such Mai relies too much on Fridge Brilliance to be as admirable as Shigeki.

Kazutoshi Kamimura.

Out of all the people here Kazutoshi Kamimura is the one person that is on par with Shigeki in terms of heroism, however due to having some reliance on fridge brilliance and off-screen heroism he does not surpass him. Kamimura basically carried the first two trials and he was also a crime scene cleaner who solved many cases, however, that was entirely off-screen heroism. It also helps that Shigeki stands out for a different reason, however as I said, these two are on par for heroism.

Takeshi Ojima.

He saved Hiroaki Nakamigawa from suicide and he risked his life by punting Monomoko in an attempt to kill or incapacitate her and thus end the killing game. I would say these two are possibly on the same level or Takeshi slightly fails to him.

Verdict

Very easy yes
