~ Vision to Wanda Maximoff |
Vision is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is a synthesized android created by Helen Cho for Ultron to upload his consciousness. However, his body was taken by the Avengers, and Tony Stark and Bruce Banner instead uploaded J.A.R.V.I.S. to create an android to assist them in defeating Ultron.
Afterward, he officially became an Avenger, where he joined Tony Stark's faction when the Sokovia Accords were introduced. He and Wanda would start a relationship, before they were targeted by the Black Order to receive Vision's Mind Stone. Eventually, Wanda was forced to destroy the Mind Stone and kill Vision to prevent Thanos from getting it, though sadly Vision's death proved to be in vain, as he was temporarily resurrected by Thanos before he ripped the Mind Stone out of Vision's head, killing him once again.
He is portrayed by Paul Bettany, who also voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. throughout the Iron Man trilogy as well as The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He was voiced by the late Yasuyuki Kase in the Japanese dub.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- Despite being an android, Vision possesses a clear moral agency and actively chose to protect life instead of following Ultron's wishes.
- He is one of the only individuals capable of wielding Mjølnir, which could only be lifted by those deemed worthy by Odin, the God of Wisdom and ruler of the Nine Realms.
- Though the MCU has a high admirable standard, he still manages to stand out with his limited screen-time through his selfless actions such as defeating Ultron and his willingness to sacrifice himself to prevent Thanos from getting the Mind Stone.
Avengers: Age of Ultron[]
- While he did initially attack Thor upon first being born, it was only because he was confused by his surroundings, but once he calmed down, he regained his composure and apologized for attacking Thor before thanking him for bringing him to life.
- He admits to the Avengers that he does not want to kill Ultron, viewing him as both unique and in pain, but sadly admits that Ultron needed to be stopped to prevent humanity from being eradicated.
- Upon encountering Ultron in Sokovia, he offers Ultron a chance for peace and says that he could change the terms to end his plans.
- He uses the Mind Stone to burn Ultron out of the Internet and prevent him from escaping again.
- He assists the other Avengers in preventing the Ultron sentries from reaching the core and dropping the city.
- He helps War Machine stop any Ultron Sentries from fleeing the city.
- He saves Wanda as Sokovia is falling.
- He confronts the final Ultron sentry, sharing some final words of introspection with him and how proud he is to be fighting alongside humanity despite their flaws, before destroying Ultron permanently.
- He becomes an official member of the Avengers, and assists them on several missions with his strategic mind.
Captain America: Civil War[]
- Some time after moving into the Avengers Compound, he enters Wanda's room to spend time with her and comfort her about the death of her brother. When she opens up about her grief, he gives her comforting words and insists she couldn't experience only grief and that her grief could simply be interpreted as her love for her brother and family persevering.
- He agrees with signing the Sokovia Accords out of a sense of responsibility and his belief that the Accords would be a safety measure to prevent any future catastrophe. Unlike Tony and Rhodey, he was not self-righteous in his allegiance with the Accords, nor did he criticize the actions of those opposing them as criminal.
- Vision attempts to calmly explain to Wanda why she was placed under house arrest, telling her that he only wanted the world to see her as Vision did.
- When fighting against Hawkeye, who'd come to rescue Wanda, Vision quickly detained him and asked him to surrender before the fighting got any worse. Then, when Wanda immobilized Vision, he pleaded with her not to make the situation worse.
- When he confronts Captain America’s team at the airport, he, understanding Steve’s belief, pleads with him to surrender and not allow the fight to continue.
- During the clash, he participates minimally due to his immense power and because he didn't want to hurt any of his fellow Avengers.
- He saves Black Panther from being crushed by a bus thrown by Ant-Man.
- When Wanda is knocked to the ground on the battlefield, Vision rushes up to her, apologizing for letting things get so out of hand.
- After Vision's energy blast meant for Falcon accidentally hits War Machine instead and sends him plummeting to the ground, Vision instantly flies to his location and is horrified by his inadvertent actions.
- Vision feels tremendous guilt over accidentally crippling War Machine and chooses not to fight any longer out of fear for hurting any more of the Avengers.
Avengers: Infinity War[]
- He starts a relationship with Wanda, allowing her to reopen her heart and recover from the trauma of having lost her brother and parents.
- Once he's attacked by Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight, he urges Wanda to flee and save herself.
- As the Avengers discuss how to deal with Thanos and his quest to get all the Infinity Stones, Vision immediately suggests destroying the Mind Stone despite knowing it would mean his death, fully ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of the universe.
- When the Black Order arrives in Wakanda, he insists they've run out of time and the stone needed to be destroyed.
- He saves Steve from being killed by Corvus instead of fleeing for his life, reminding Steve that they don't trade lives.
- Upon Thanos' arrival, Vision tells her that they've run out of time and the stone needed to be destroyed. He comforts her, telling Wanda that she could never hurt him and it was for the good of the universe. Then, as the stone is being destroyed, Vision mouthes to Wanda that he loves her.
- He sacrifices his life to destroy the Mind Stone, nearly succeeding in stopping Thanos from getting all six Infinity Stones and eliminating half of all life in the universe.
WandaVision[]
- The influence he had left on Wanda led to her making a Chaos Magic recreation of him when she created the Westview Anomaly. This version:
- Confronted Wanda about the Hex anomaly, saying that trapping people's mind is wrong and cannot be justified in any means.
- Freed everyone trapped within the Westview Anomaly.
- Defended Wanda and her children from Agatha Harkness.
- Defeated his Synthezoid body as White Vision and restored his original memories, when his Synthezoid counterpart was reprogrammed by S.W.O.R.D. to take down Wanda's hex and kill her.
- His Synthezoid body only planned to kill Wanda out of being reprogrammed into doing so, meaning that he was only brainwashed when he did so.
- Begged Wanda to remove the Hex.
- Once he learned that Wanda had never intended to trap those people's minds, he understands and forgive her for it.
- Bade farewell to Wanda as the latter had to dispel the Hex due to Agatha Harkness greedily coveting her magical abilities, erasing Vision and his children.
- His actions had inspired Wanda to create a family for herself by any means necessary, even if it meant using the Darkhold.
Trivia[]
- Although Vision is PG, his first What If...? version is IH due to luring multiple civilians to Camp Lehigh so that Wanda could eat them, although that variant felt remorseful for his actions. His second What If...? version is Pure Evil as Infinity Ultron from that universe was a combination of Ultron and Vision.
