~ Wade to Ember. |
Wade Ripple is the deuteragonist of Pixar's 27th animated full-length feature film Elemental.
He's a water elemental whose job is to inspect various settlements within Element City for the sake of the city's maintenance. One of them is the Lumen family's Fireplace business, which started the main conflict of the film in the first place through a mixture of elemental differences, and his and Ember's numerous tensions. However, as the film progresses, Wade and Ember find themselves bonding, and the two end up confronting the complications of a relationship between a Water and Fire person.
He's also the son of Brook Rippe and his father, the younger brother of Alan Ripple, the older brother of Lake Ripple, the brother-in-law of Eddy Ripple, the nephew of Uncle Harold, the uncle of Marco and Polo Ripple, and the love interest of Ember Lumen.
He is voiced by Mamoudou Athie.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- He's always kind and open minded to every person he comes across, regardless of what race they are. This is especially commendable considering the amount of prejudice the Fire people are seen experiencing.
- Is slow to anger and never holds a grudge even when faced with prejudice.
Elemental[]
- When Ember reveals how hard her father (Bernie) worked on opening his own shop, Wade is filled with a deep sense of compassion and regret right after sending his report on how run down it is to City Hall. He then immediately offers to help her stop it from getting shut down.
- Agrees to a deal with Gale where he and Ember will find the source of a major leak and fix it so that in return, Bernie's shop won't get shut down.
- Listens when Ember opens up to him about the prejudice she and her family faced when they wanted to see a Vivisteria flower and offers her advice about her temper.
- Successfully finds the major leak with Ember and fixes it.
- Goes on a number of dates with Ember and does his best to make her feel comfortable and have fun regardless of any issues that may have arised due to her status as a Fire person.
- Doesn't get mad or hold a grudge against Bernie when he angrily chases him out of his shop for "watering down" his food.
- When Ember visits his home and meets his family, Wade shows disbelief and disgust when one of his family members unintentionally offends her by saying how impressed he was that she can speak so fluently for a Fire person.
- Admits to Ember that he loves her during a family game, causing her to shed a tear for the first time.
- Proves to Ember's mom that there's true love between him and Ember despite the preconception that people of different Elements can't mix by finding a way to take part in her matchmaking session despite it being designed solely for Fire people.
- Takes Ember to achieve her childhood dream of seeing a Vivisteria flower by taking her to the same garnden she told him about before. Even though it's flooded now, he gets help from Gale to make an air bubble for her so he can push her around and see the flowers up close, which makes her extremely happy.
- Convinces Ember to try touching one another for the first time to see what happens. When they make contact, neither of them is hurt, further proving that different Elements can indeed mix.
- Even after Ember rudely breaks up with him, Wade still goes to try and convince her to be honest with herself in regards to both her feelings towards him as well as how she doesn't really want to run Bernie's shop.
- Despite his attempts to convince her not being initially successful, he doesn't grow bitter or become resentful of Ember, immediately going back to help her once he realizes both her and Firetown are in danger from a flood.
- Helps save Ember and her family's Blue Flame, which is sacred to them as it represents their traditions.
- When the two get trapped inside a small room and Wade begins to evaporate due to the heat, he stops Ember from opening a hole so that she wont get extinguished from the water that would come flooding in. As a result, he willingly lets himself fully evaporate and seemingly die as soon as Ember admits she does love him.
- Even though he didn't actually end up dying, neither Wade nor Ember knew this would be the outcome, showing Wade is willing to sacrifice his own life due to how much love he has for Ember.
