| “ | Yuji, you're a strong kid, so try to help others. Save the people you can, even if it’s only those closest to you. It’s okay if you lose your way and don’t worry about whether they’ll thank you or not. Just save as many as you can, even if you can only save one. When you die, you should be surrounded by people. Don’t end up like me. | „ |
| ~ Wasuke gaving his Grandson: Yuji his last words and advice to help others before he passes away peacefully. |
| “ | As a kid, I was always better than most in sports and in fights. But never once did I think 'this is something only I can do'. Never! [..] Consuming Sukuna is something only I can do! So even if I could escape my death sentence and run away from this responsibility, then someday I'd be eating food, taking a bath, or reading manga. And the moment I stop to think, I'd go 'Oh, I bet that right now, somewhere out there, someone is dying because of Sukuna. But that doesn't concern me. It's certainly not my fault. You expect me to tell myself that? Well, I refuse to do that. I don't know how I'll feel when I'm dying, but... I won't regret the way I lived! | „ |
| ~ Yuji to Masamichi Yaga. |
Yuji Itadori is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Yuta Okkotsu) of the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise. He is one of the three first-year students at Tokyo Jujutsu High, alongside Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki, after becoming the vessel for the King of Curses Ryomen Sukuna.
Despite being a first year, Yuji possesses an incredible amount of potential and power, with his teacher Satoru Gojo placing him among the students who may one day surpass him. It is later revealed that his grandfather Wasuke was the twin brother of Sukuna in his previous incarnation, making him the "grandnephew" and descendant of the King of Curses. It also explains why Sukuna was incapable of possessing Yuji's whole body at will.
In Japanese, he is voiced by Junya Enoki. In English, he is voiced Adam McArthur.
What Makes Him Pure Good?[]
In General[]
- From the beginning, Yuji was a kind and compassionate boy who sought to commit to righteousness as instructed by his grandfather. While he does occasionally demonstrate recklessness, it's only because he wants to do the morally right thing to achieve the best possible outcome for everyone.
- He has shown time and time again to have an extremely selfless nature.
- While he possessed a personal hatred towards villains such as Ryomen Sukuna and Mahito, this is heavily justified since the two of them have no single regard for human life, something that completely disgusts Yuji.
- Furthermore, while he was initially wrathful towards Mahito and intentionally sought to strike terror into his heart when he managed to defeat him, he subverts this after defeating Sukuna, offering him an olive branch to live a normal life even if Sukuna refuses.
- In addition to this, his desire to kill Mahito at the end was due to a sense of duty rather than personal hatred, simply believing he was a cog on a mission and that Mahito was right it's in their nature to eliminate each other. He also proved he was fine with ignoring Mahito after Kenjaku's arrival as he tried to save Gojo.
- While he tends to have several mischievous moments, they are largely played for laughs and he doesn't go too far with them.
Past[]
- His cheerful personality made Yuko Ozawa become more confident in herself, so much that she was unrecognizable from the girl Yuji befriended.
Present[]
- He ate Sukuna's finger without hesitation to stop the Curse from rampaging and save his friends, despite Megumi's warning that it will kill him.
- Took control of Sukuna and stopped him from killing Megumi.
- Convinced Yaga about his goal of giving people a proper death, thus getting his approval and admission in Jujutsu High.
- When Tadashi was trapped due to the Finger Curse's Veil, he convinced Megumi that every human life is precious, thus convincing Megumi to assist in their goals.
- After Sukuna took control of Yuji's body and tried to kill Megumi, Yuji refused to take Sukuna's bait and died refusing Sukuna any victory. When Sukuna revealed he anticipated this response and revives him with a Binding Vow, Yuji didn't have any idea.
- While Junpei was going through his misanthropy due to Mahito's influence, Yuji befriended him and took him to watch movies with him.
- He nearly convinced Junpei to turn away from his misanthropic mindset after promising him they will find his mother's killer. Yuji later offered Junpei to join him and have a better path for his life as a Jujutsu Sorcerer rather than a Curse User, which Junpei was on the verge of accepting, which was only prevented because of Mahito's interference.
- His dreams got destroyed right in his own eyes along The fantasy of his friendship with Junpei with the latter becoming friends with Megumi and Nobara.
- He even asked Sukuna for his assistance, although he refused to help Yuji heal Junpei while he laughed alongside Mahito at not only Junpei's undeserved death, but also at Yuji's despair, as well as didn't show any sympathy for either of them, to the point where Mahito became a personally evil enemy to Yuji and was motivated to kill him.
- Despite punching Mahito in a rage, it was completely justified after he forcibly transformed Junpei into a deformed creature, with the latter dying from the process of Idle Transfiguration and no remorse for his actions.
- Jumped inside Mahito's Domain to save Nanami from him, thus inadvertently making Mahito touch Sukuna's soul and thus defeating him.
- Despite Megumi and Nobara being justifiably mad at him for faking his death and fooling them, it was only because Gojo fooled him into somehow thinking revealing himself that way will bring about the end of global warming.
- After seeing their horrified expression, Yuji immediately apologized for it.
- Despite Todo trying to kill him, he gave him a chance to talk in peace.
- After Todo deluded himself into believing him and Itadori are brothers after he revealed they have the same type in women, Yuji forgave him for attempting to kill him earlier.
- Despite being informed that Kyoto students want to kill him, he harbors no grudge towards them and even enjoyed playing baseball with them.
- After Hanami attacked the meeting, Yuji allied with the Kyoto students to fight them.
- Despite Eso and Kechizu attempting to kill people in a highway after allying with the Disaster Curses, Yuji initially gave them a chance to stop.
- Initially was planning to spare Eso after his tears after Kechizu's death made him hesitate, only changing his mind after he revealed it was a trick and tried to escape using a truck by taking its driver as a hostage.
- Yuji saved the truck driver by attacking Eso with Black Flash, and killed him in order to stop him from killing anymore innocent people.
- Despite assisting in the deaths of both Eso and Kechizu, Yuji was shown to be sorrowful regarding their deaths and asked Nobara if their lives will continue by only killing Curses.
- Participated in the Shibuya Incident to stop the Disaster Curses from keeping innocent people as hostages.
- When the Grasshopper Curse was eating people in the subway, Yuji extracted vital information about Mahito and the barriers and then exorcised the Curse, thus stopping it from eating any more people.
- Announced to everyone that the Disaster Curses succeeded in sealing Gojo, thus saving some sorcerers from falling into their trap and refocusing their objective on saving Gojo.
- Defeated Awasaka by teaming up with Megumi and removed the barriers which he cast upon Shibuya.
- After Sukuna gave him a front-row view of the carnage he caused during the time Sukuna was in control, Yuji was horrified at himself and decided to stop the Shibuya Incident at all costs.
- Defeated Mahito with the help of Todo, and stopped his cruel ambitions towards humanity.
- While he was understandably wrathful towards Mahito, it was only in response to his numerous unforgivable crimes and quickly showed revenge has not consumed him when Kenjaku tricked and absorbed Mahito.
- When Kenjaku arrived, he immediately stopped trying to kill Mahito, instead choosing to focus on saving Gojo.
- When Choso arrived to save Yuji from Kenjaku, Yuji (despite his understandable mistrust) saved him from Uraume and warmed up to him after the Death Painting revealed that he's his half-brother.
- He requested Hirogumi Higurama to give him a hundred points so he and his allies could put an end to the Culling Games. When Higurama defiantly refused, Yuji was forced to be aggressive and battled the former.
- When Higurama uses his Domain Expainson: Deadly Sentencing for a re-trial, Yuji immediately confesses that he was responsible for the mass massacre in Shibuya, even though it was Sukuna who did. This confession left Higurama stunned as he realized it was Sukuna who did the murder and couldn't understand why Yuji took the fall for something he didn't do.
- He tried to extend an olive branch to Sukuna and gave him a chance to return to his body despite everything he had done, such as using his body to kill people in Shibuya and giving him so much trauma he became a death-seeker, due to seeing his tragic past and pitying him, which Sukuna rejected due to pure spite.
- Despite this, it was shown to have somewhat of an effect on Sukuna, as during his final meeting with Mahito in the afterlife, Sukuna freely admitted his way of life was not worth living and he would like to be reborn as a good person.
